SP3 dropped from VFX oscar contention

I can kind of understand why SM3 would be dropped out of the running. The movie was an evolution of SM2's action scenes, i.e. something we've seen before.

Transformers, 300, I Am Legend, and the Golden Compass all make sense. But I don't see why the hell Evan Almighty and The Bourne Ultimatum (despite being a great movie) are still in that category. Or Pirates 3, for that matter, unless there was some huge leap in technology from Pirates 2.

I Am Legend was a good movie, but the special effects were sub-par at best.

I've seen scarier, more realalistic monsters in video games, quite frankly.

Well with the majority of the films in the category, sm3 never ever stood a chance and nor does it even deserve to win. The Effects in the movie weren't that great and they sure as hell didn't present anything new.

Sandman's origin is seriously overrated. The only good thing about that scene were, the initial sand grains, the music and him trying to grab hold of the charm necklace (emotional) and that was it, everything else in that scene looked way too cartoony. I can tell you now that, films like 300, transformers, golden compass and potc awe had much better effects.

Transformers will win hands down but SM3's graphics weren't great but some of those movies in the running...come on!?

Odd. I figured it was shoe-in for nomination because of the birth of Sandman effects. I mean SPIDER-MAN 2 WON THE OSCAR. At first I thought this was resentment at the movie but seeing as Transformers and POTC3, equally disappointing movies, are on that list I'm shocked by that. And Evan Almighty? You GOTTA be kidding.

Bourne Ultimatum is only up there because it was a great movie and the Academy won't recognize it for anything else because it was an action flick, except for technical awards.

Oh well Transformers and 300 are the best on that short list for sfx, didn't really care for either, but at least 300 had some redeemable quality.

It didnt stand a chance against I Am Legend, Evan, or Bourne?

Please. :whatever:

I wasn't talking about the creatures, I was talking about New York, which was probably the most impressive looking post-apocalyptic environment I've seen in a movie.

Bourne!? BOURNE!? That's like saying the original Termiantor had better FX than T2! The birth of Sandman scene was one of the best visual scenes in history! >:-(

Read my post again. Notice I used the word majority instead of all of them in the effects category and notice how I left out I am legend, Bourne and Evan almighty. I'm not an idiot, I know what I'm talking about.

Spider-Man 3's VFX weren't that good. Although the Sandman scene was awesome and it should have been nominated just for that.

Transformers should and will win though.

Bummer, Sandman's birth and the symbiote's overall look were great.

Transformers FTW!

Meh...it would've been beat by POTC3 or Transformers anyways. But it sucks it didn't even get nominated.

Spider-Man 3 has earned enough from the box-office, it doesn't need an Oscar.

yeah the surfer looked good but otherwise...eh

The nominees will probably be Transformers, POTC: AWE, and 300. Spidey never stood a chance. Unless, of course, the Academy decided to nominate 5 movies instead of 3.

even spidey 2's shady effects were better than spidey 3's.....

transformers will nail this category to be fair...

Rise of the sandman had way better graphics then the silver surfer.

I want 300, Pirates, or Transformers to win for the effects category. Those three films had some beautiful visuals and quite a few jaw dropping effects.

That sucks, the majority of the listed movie's sfx were inferior to SM3's. Looks like Transformers will pick up the award this year.

i'd agree with that statement. They didn't even bother with makeup ala silent hill.

They are just flat out CG, and not great at that.

I think they're refering to the abandoed New York though. Really, the amount of time and effort to take populated locals and strip them down into an overgrowth mess is pretty award noteworthy if you ask me.

The birth of Sandman scene alone should of gave Spidey the nomination.

That is bull****.

The fake Peter Parker face in other shots could have taken away their nod. They look for great visual effects throughout the movie. Transformers was consistent with their visuals. SM3 only had a few awesome CGI scenes.

Defenitely, that's one of the most visually amazing things I have ever seen in a film. For them to not see that, I really don't know why.

As for what Chaseter said, I disagree. I thought the CGI looked great for their faces.
