I'm honestly hoping that this is successful because it could open the the door for other dark comicbook characters to have their own films. Like, The Spectre.
Most likely yeah.
t:So... did anyone see Spawn's cameo in Ready Player One?
I for one somehow completely missed it even though he's apparently right in front leading a charge into battle for 10 seconds. I must have been too busy looking at Battletoads and the 600 other references happening simultaneously.

Spawn needs a big budget to be done right. I don't like the description we've been getting from Todd McFarlane. I want them to go all out. The time is right to do a reboot.
Yeah I did, it was kinda hard to NOT see him, honestly![]()

According to That Hashtag Show (proceed with your grain of salt), actor Jamie Foxx is the studios first choice to play Al Simmons, aka Spawn, in the upcoming film. If the news of Jamie Foxx being approached for Spawn rings a bell, then you are probably the worlds biggest Spawn and/or Jamie Foxx fan.
Years ago, when asked which superheroes he would be interested in playing, Foxx specifically mentioned Spawn as something hes been actively pursuing. However, that was before the news of Blumhouse producing the outing, with a presumably small budget in play. That being said, signing on Foxx to headline the feature might be the buzz needed to put Spawn back on peoples radar.
That Hashtag Show also drops a little bit of knowledge on what we can maybe expect in the upcoming film. McFarlane has been very vocal about this version of Spawn being drastically different than the original film from 1997. Instead of making the character a run-of-the-mill superhero, like say Iron Man or Batman, the director is interested in making Spawn more like the shark in Jaws. Hardly seen, but a force to be reckoned with, nonetheless.
The new rumor corroborates that idea, but adds that Spawn character Detective Twitch will be the primary character and will team up with the titular hero to wipe out the bad guys.
They also mention that the hope is to get Spawn under production by the beginning of August. So even if Foxx isnt the guy for the role, we should be hearing some casting news sooner than later.
What I dont get about this is, didnt McFarlane say that Spawn wouldnt even have lines in this movie and would just be a background figure? I guess thats changed?
If so, thats a good thing, IMO. And Foxx would be a solid choice for the role.
Then again, Foxx is in that Robin Hood movie so... maybe hes not above taking a non-speaking role now, lol.

How are they going to be able to afford Jamie Foxx on a cheap low budget?
Jamie Foxx is set to star in the Spawn movie from Blumhouse, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Foxx had been rumored to star as the titular antihero in the feature that will hail from creator Todd McFarlane, but now it is official.
Spawn follows a black-ops agent who is betrayed and murdered, his soul sent to hell for all the innocents he killed. While there, he makes a deal with a demon who allows him to return to the earthly plane and his wife. However, five years have now passed, and his wife has moved on, while he is a disfigured and superpowered spawn of hell.
McFarlane, who is also known as one of the founding artists at Image Comics, wrote the first draft of the low-budget feature that he will direct.
Michael Jai White previously starred as the villain when the comic was adapted into a 1997 New Line horror-action movie.
