616. Free Roam. Amazing Spider-Man cel shaded visuals. Green Goblin as Villain. Good story.

I could put up with the average Activision cut and paste as far as swinging, combat, mission structure goes, but if those things are there, i'll be interested. Not really bothered for any more gimmickry.

Beenox has... RECOGNIZABLE TALENT?! :wow:

Wow. That actually makes me feel good. Guerrilla Games is big!

For those who don't know: Guerrilla Games are behind all 3 Killzone games.

Whoa!!! That's incredibly awesome!

I don't necessarily mind a 2099 game, but I would perfer that we got a 616 free roam game with Green Goblin as the main VIllain.

I agree with this. No matter how cool a 2099 game could be, it can never beat 616 imo. They should focus on the classic universe and make that right first before taking on other versions.

TBH, I don't understand the love for those graphics. I thought it looked a bit too goofy. While I thought the city in the tutorial level looked cool, I also think characters looked cartoonish in the Amazing dimension. Kraven is a prime example of that.

It would be cool though if they went with a more "serious" cell shaded visual look, like Prince Of Persia. Make all characters more serious looking and that would be great.

Oh, I thought the character design was bad on the faces, but I loved how it made the colours look, and looked nice motion. If they did that, but actually got some of the great comic artists to draw it, I would be perfectly happy.

See, I don't think a Spidey game should be all 'serious' looking. They tried that with WOS. The Spidey world is the opposite of the Batman world, it's bright and colourful and the villains are wacky and outlandish. Where it comes across well is in the heart of the character, and the quality of the writing.

I mean think of Spidey at it's best. Sure some villain might have just killed someone, or be threatening to kill MJ, which is obviously heavy, but Spidey still cracks jokes while kicking them in the Brian Michael Bendis.

I forgot the name of the new story, but this time Spider-Man 2099 isn't a dimension, he is what PAD made him originally, a future Spider-Man

Time Trouble? Crisis Time? What?

I'm with Wolvieboy on the graphics, cel shaded Amazing style all the way. It felt really appropriate for Spider-Man and it looked so good. And I thought the faces were well done, some nice animations for them. Better than a lot of other games. I think they would fit good with a more serious story to, it doesn't have to be dark and moody to have good story. Just look at the Uncharted games, pretty much the last outpost for colorful big budget games and with some very strong moments in the story. Besides, comic books isn't always dark when there is something serious going on, The Night Gwen Stacy Died doesn't look any different than any other of its contemporary comics for example.

And about this being a 2099 game just because Peter David is on board. Sure if there ever was one he would probably be the go-to guy but are people forgetting he also wrote The Death of Jean Dewolff among other things?

Spider-Man: Edge of Time. Basically, this game looks like Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions minus Noir and Ultimate. You're hopping between present 616 spidey and the future, with Noir, trying to avoid the premature death of Peter Parker. So presumably Parker dies sometimes in between 616 and 2099, and it looks like there will be back and forth, with 2099 Spidey trying to find clues as to what led to Parkers demise, then passing them on to Amazing Spidey so he can take steps in avoiding the fate.

Interesting idea, if it's written better then the previous one. Also, i would hope since this is the second outing for amazing and 2099, they can really improve and expand upon all the combat and level design/size. With only two universes, there should be room for bigger scope, and i'd like to see Amazing and 2099 able to do some of the stealth aspects of Noir too, since they weren't exactly power specific abilities.

MARVEL™ AND ACTIVISION® ANNOUNCE SPIDER-MAN™: EDGE OF TIME
High-Octane, Adrenaline-Fueled Adventure Tasks Players with Saving Spider-Man this Fall

Santa Monica, CA – March 31, 2011 –Activision Publishing, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) and Marvel Entertainment (NYSE: MVL) today announced Spider-Man: Edge of Time, where Spider-Man faces one of his greatest challenges ever – saving Spider-Man. Developed by Activision-owned studio Beenox, Spider-Man: Edge of Time challenges the player to take on the roles of both classic Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 to correct a timestream gone awry and prevent a catastrophic future brought on by the early and untimely death of Peter Parker.

“The first Spider-Man entry by Beenox, Spider-Man™: Shattered Dimension was touted as one of the best Spider-Man games to date from both critics and fans,” said Vicharin Vadakan, Director, Global Brand Management. “Beenox is once again taking a fresh and different approach to bring a high-octane adventure and unexpected story to life in Spider-Man: Edge of Time.”

“At Beenox, we are constantly listening to the fans and looking for new and creative ways to innovate the gameplay experience for them,” said Dee Brown, Studio Head, Beenox. “We want to create a totally distinct experience in Spider-Man: Edge of Time by working with Peter David on the story and creating this urgent, high-stakes experience where time is working against you and the fate of Spider-Man hangs in the balance.”

Spider-Man: Edge of Time is a focused, action-packed adventure set in two connected and evolving timelines, from the contemporary times of the Amazing Spider-Man to the corrupted future world of Spider-Man 2099, against the backdrop of a rich, tightly crafted narrative by acclaimed Marvel veteran Peter David (co-creator of the comic book series Spider-Man 2099). The game features all-new “cause-and-effect” gameplay, where players will see how the immediate and sometimes unexpected effects of their actions as one Spider-Man changes the timeline of the other Spider-Man. Spider-Man: Edge of Time is slated for release this fall.

Attendees at WonderCon 2011 in San Francisco, CA, can get a sneak peek and learn more about the game on the Activision/Spider-Man panel on Saturday, April 2, at 4:30 p.m. in Room 103.

Lol Dtud... if you'd only waited a few more minutes, you could have left that Peter David comment off your post :P

Just read that myself, so it was 2099 somewhere all along. Boo me for being wrong.

Sounds pretty good otherwise I guess, some Peter Parker in there and some Amazing, probably voice by Josh Keaton. It's all good.

Cause-and-effect sounds like a gimmick tho, but hopefully it works out well. And the story has a lot more potential than Shattered Dimensions. Now lets just hope they both remember last game so it won't be a new reboot of sorts, even if the voices are different.

I would completely disregard the 'cause and effect' thing as a story element. That is clearly just a story element, where you change something in the past, something for 2099 will change. They're making it sound like it's a morality system, when really, they've just designed it that way, it's still a linear narrative.

Activision do that all the time, I remember them doing something similar with X-Men Legends 2. "Choose good or evil and change the course of history in the Marvel universe!" even though the outcome was always the same, no matter who you chose.

The plot idea sounds intriquing and the changes you can make even cooler. I like how Spidey games are showing these crazy Neo Silver Age stories, i hope sooner or later Batman games will take influence on that, since sooner or later the Arkham plot simply can't work. Gotta stay fresh, new and exciting.

Probably, the gimmicky part was more in the sense that they even throw this in as a feature with a name, when it'll probably just be something you can't do anything about. Prince of Persia: Two Thrones also did this, promising you to chose which prince would rule in the end. Didn't really turn out that way.

Is that Venom in his eye? ;)

Eh...can't say I'm excited.
Hopefully the trailer next Saturday will change things.

The poster is pretty cool, though.

Oh I agree with that. When I meant serious, I meant that the artists shouldn't make the characters look goofy like they did in the Amazing universe imo. But I agree, it still shouldn't be a Batman wannabe.

I completely agree about Uncharted 2. That's a perfect game regarding mood that would fit Spidey like a glove.

Oh and btw, as I said, I never meant dark when I said serious.

SO, guys, what do you think? Do you think that this new Spider-Man game is going to be more of an open world game than SD?

I don't see anything that points at it being more open world. If anything, they seem to keep many things from SD. I think it will be as linear as SD. Whether it is a good thing or not, no one knows yet. We'll just have to wait until we get the trailer.

Anyway, I must say that I like what I've read alot, even though I'm not a big fan of 2099 returning again. I wonder what will cause his death. I hope it's Green Goblin! That would be awesome!

Overall, this gives me a better gut feeling than SD ever did to me. Seems like an improvement story wise.

Oh, and I absolutely ADORE the picture. Now THAT'S how Spidey's movie costume should look like imo. I love the "chaotic" webbing.

EDIT: I guess I missunderstood the death thing. I mean, I wonder who Spidey has to save himself from. Again, I hope it's Green Goblin.

Also, I wonder if Madame Web will make a return. Seems likely to me.

Or wait...if it's about time and all that. Why not Dr. Strange?

^^ Well, overall, I'm very happy with the story and although I really liked SD, it defenitely could have had improvements, but i think this game will improve upon that.

I do wish this was going to be free roam, and sadly, I fear we won't be seeing one for a very long time. Oh well, I guess.

Yeah I agree. This really needs to have a better story than SD had. Not just "beat that guy and then beat that guy, because pieces of a magic tablet make them powerful".

I also hope that this game will improve on variety. In SD, it was all about beating hordes after hordes of bad guys and resquing people, with some Noir sneaking in the mix. And then a boss fight.

I wouldn't say that we won't get a free roam in a very long time. I definitely don't think this one will be free roam as it would just be too much to make both Amazing and 2099 worlds open sandbox. But Beenox has showed that they are eager to listen to the fans. If many fans want open world, I think we'll get that maybe already after Edge Of Time.

However, I just hope this game will be great, open world or not.

Surprisingly, Spidey 2099's VA in SD, Dan Gilvezan, was my favorite after Josh Keaton.
I'd like if he comes back to voice Spidey again.

And please, no Stan Lee narrating. I didn't like that at all in the last game.

I hope 616 Green Goblin is the VIllian in this game. Well, one of the Villians at least along with Doc Ock.

Btw, I think the next free roam game will be for the new Spider-Man film coming out.

I hope this plays a lot better than Shattered Dimensions. Apart from the 2099 free fall levels, *nothing* about that game felt fluid.

Can't say I'm excited for this. I didn't mind Shattered Dimensions but I actually liked 2099 the least out of all of them. I'd like it better if this was just 616 Spidey dealing with whatever happens after SD in his Universe..
