Spider-Man: Edge of Time

They definitely need to play on the random aspect a bit better if they go free roam again. Imagine swinging around the city when all of a sudden you hear an explosion and people screaming, and see Rhino in the streets tearing **** up. Or you come across Black Cat and find out there's going to be robbery, and you have the option to team up with her. Or randomly getting a phone call from MJ about that date you were supposed to have tonight, and you have to rush to get to her in time. They need to make the player FEEL like Peter Parker, and that includes the spontaneous part.

If they were to go about it like GTA, Spidey could have a phone or some form of communication that possibly gives him access to more missions, for ex, if you contact SHIELD, their missions are along the lines of maintaining order throughout the city, Black Cat's missions would deal with foiling robberies or stopping her from committing them, Bugle missions could deal with Spidey taking pics of himself, or actually stopping whatever villain may be posing a threat.

yeah similarly to Joker in Batman: Arkham Asylum or Green Goblin in Spiderman 3

Exactly

Thats exactly what ISNT needed. Spider-Man isnt about interacting with other heros, regardless of how often he does it. The majority of Spidey's best stories focus on him and his villain, not him and a team of heros or villains(not counting the S6). Spider-Man, first and foremost is a solitary hero, he's not part of the X-Men. I think cameos are neat, but they arent necessary to crafting a good game. The game needs to make you feel like Spidey and have a story/villain thats personal to him. Its what made Arkham Asylum so great.

Exactly!

About the story. I actually don't want TOO much freedom, even in a freeroam game. That could take away from the main story, if I would be able to swing around and do other stuff all the time instead of moving on.

Tbh, I want the game to take alot of inspiration from alot of great games.

What it MOST should take inspiration from is not Arkham Asylum imo. It's Uncharted 2. I mean yeah, the graphics will never be as good seeing how little time they have. But Naughty Dog's way of telling a great story with awesome dialogues and make it all feel epic, cinematic and moving is really the way to go for a Spider-Man game I feel.

Next, they should keep on having the same amount of great fan service as Shattered Dimension had. Having great voice actors and all, having some alternate suits, having character bio's, 3D character statues, artwork etc. And most importantly, they should handle Spider-Man himself at least as good as they did in Shattered Dimension. That's also why they should hire Keaton again and keep Dan Slott as writer (maybe together with someone more this time?). Also, mix the gameplay with both stealth and action.

Third, they should take inspiration from Arkham Asylum (and City of course but it's not out yet but it seems to be even better even though) of the way to handle the main antagonist. Have Norman Osborn/Green Goblin (616) as the main villain. I also love the way Arkham Asylum made Joker ever present. He was always there with his voice, TV's and his schemes. Even though it may be hard to do the same to Green Goblin, I still want him to be somewhat present all the time somehow. Also, even though Spidey doesn't transport the same way as Batman in the game, I like the way they make an open world game still focus heavily on a linear story. You can't just fool around. That's why I don't want lots of random events even in an open world Spidey game. Save random bank robberies and stuff like that for something that you do after you've beaten the story mode or something.

Also, this may sound sell-out, but I think the freeflow combat would fit Spidey extremely well.

Also, like Arkham Asylum, I want Spidey to be the only hero. Don't even show signs of other heroes. That means, leave out the Baxter Building etc. even though it's a big part of the Marvel universe. Instead, have alot of signs from other villains that you can collect. That could be very fun to do in an open world. Kinda like the riddles in Arkham Asylum, but there's no riddle. As someone else posted a long time ago, you could somehow mix that in with Daily Bugle stuff. Like, if you find e.g. Electro's mask or a cinema poster called "Mysterio's Menace" or something somewhere, you could take a photo of it, go to Daily Bugle and get something for it, like a character biography and artwork etc.

That's how I'd want my game.

More like getting a call from Carlie :P Man, showing Peter's love life in-game could really piss people off, I know I don't want to date Carlie anyway. Maybe if they set her up to die but probably not.

Long Post

I agree with a lot of your points, having a linear story makes for a nice progression, and probably make it easier to write dialog for it to. And graphic-wise they should just go with the art style they used for Amazing or Ultimate in SD, in my opinion it fits Spider-Man very well and the graphics doesn't age as fast. USM still looks good, which is not something you can say about all games from that period.

However I don't think they should make a free-roam game to tight having you not being able to just mess around when you want, thats one of the upsides to open world games. And people who just want to follow the story can easy just ignore the other stuff until they're done with it. For reference sake take Infamous, it was perfectly done it that respect. If you just did missions it felt really cohesive but you could at anytime go of to do other stuff. Now having an overabundance of stuff happen at all times gets annoying, but having very little stuff happen gets boring. I can swing around in Ultimate Spider-Man for 20 or so minutes without encountering anything, and for a game with very little other stuff to do in it, that sucks.

Now about the fan service, I made a post in the Shattered Dimensions thread a couple of months ago describing what you just did so I'm obviously totally behind that. But I think that having buildings and stuff in it are just that, fan service and thats why I want the to be in. It doesn't take away from the game in anyway and makes you feel like you're in the Marvel Universe. Heck even Shattered Dimensions had a FF suit in it (and a reference to Mr Fantastic) and the old PSX game had Four Plaza.

Copy and paste everything i've ever said in this thread and you know how I feel. I am so over this discussion, and its not the people doing the discussing at blame. It feels like we've been talking about 'The Perfect Spider-Man' game for years and we still haven't got it. I'm starting to think that as long as Activision owns the franchise, we never will.

I'm sorry, who's Carlie? I've been out of the loop on comics for a good four years or so.

Also,I thought about it some more last night and one thing that kinda bugged me, especially in free roam games, is how it feels controlling Spidey. Sounds odd, I know, but compare controlling Spider-Man in the movie games to other free roam characters like Cole McGrath or Ezio. Spidey should feel a bit more heavy, I guess I'm trying to say. I like Oscorp's idea of gameplay that is a hybrid of both stealth and action. I'd say take the combat of AA, free running of inFamous and stealth of Assassin's Creed 2 and Uncharted 2

I'd say thats perfect except maybe parkour from Prototype rather than infamous, it was much faster paced. inFamous would be too slow for Spidey.

Thank you! This is what I'm talking about as well. As long as a mediocre company like Activision has the license, a "perfect" Spidey game will not be possible. It's especially worrying that the next game is scheduled for the end of this year.

TBH they aren't "mediocre". Otherwise they wouldn't be ****ing rich.

They just don't care about the consumer at all. They're quite good at making money tho.

(I'm not defending them, just sayin'...)

I would say they are entirely mediocre, from a creative stand point. As far as marketing and publicity goes, sure they're great. But I would think the idea of collecting franchises and ramming them into the ground until they're stale makes a somewhat 'mediocre' company.

I'll go so far to say that they are mediocre, you take a free-roam Spider-Man game, slap cel shaded graphics on it, comic panel cutscenes and call it Ultimate Spider-Man. Do away with the cel shaded graphics and panels throw in a massive onslaught of symbiotes, tweak the combat and call it Web of Shadows, finally take a step in the right direction, make the game somewhat linear and add in multiple incarnations of Spidey and we get Shattered Dimensions. Now is the time for Activision to really step their game up to compete with the the likes of Arkham Asylum, it's kinda hard to put that kind of faith into them when all the Spidey games of the past have been pretty much the same with the exception of SD. :o

I'm sorry, who's Carlie? I've been out of the loop on comics for a good four years or so.

Carlie is Peter's current girlfriend in the comics.

Activision as a company is messed up, I can't believe Bobby Kotick hasn't been fired yet. Sure they make a ton of money but they have no goodwill whatsoever and Call of Duty is the only game that sells outside of Blizzards properties.

That doesn't mean they don't have good developers and playing Shattered Dimensions gave me some faith in Beenox. If Activision does an EA and turn their **** around tho, giving developers some space no doubt would we see more awesome games from that company. But this probably isn't the place for that discussion.

And sell each of these like hotpockets. They made tons of money with these ****** games. I agree that they're mediocre thunder****s from a creative point of view but the reason why Kotick is still where he is atm it's because their sales strategy actually works on the consumer.

Want to change this? Stop buying their godamn games... How many of you bought Web of Shadows? SD wasn't really that great either and most of you still grabbed it. Hell, how many of you are still buying Call of Duty titles?

Me personally, I only own WoS and Shattered Dimensions, I also own Modern Warfare 2. I'm not the type to jump up and by every Spider-Man or Call of Duty game unless there is something that truly stands out above the rest. At the time when I purchased WoS, I was under the assumption that the game was gonna be pretty amazing, and in a way I was let down, but I still have the game to this day just to say that I do have at least one Spidey game for the current gen console, when i found out that SD was taking a linear approach, that pushed me to get the game. And to be honest, Call of Duty atm has a little bit more to offer than Spider-Man, alot of people purchase the game solely for the multiplayer aspect of it, that which Spider-Man lacks.

Activision has appointed Beenox the primary developer on all future Spider-Man titles.

Activision Publishing, Inc. today announced that wholly owned development studio Beenox has been named the primary developer on upcoming Activision titles featuring Marvel™’s famous web-slinger, Spider-Man™. Beenox’s most recent breakout success was with Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, one of the most highly rated Spider-Man titles to date and Wizard Magazine’s 2010 Game of the Year.

“Beenox’s creative vision reinvigorated the Spider-Man gaming experience among critics and fans in Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions,” said Patrick Kelly, Senior Vice President, Activision Studios. “We can’t wait to see where this talented studio will take this franchise in the future.”

Looks like we know who will most likely develop this title. There is still a possibility this may not happen considering SM:SD JUST released last year.

I'm thinking, we'll see a kiddie Spider-Man game this year from another dev team and a more teen/fan-based game from Beenox next year. Either way, I say congrats to Beenox.

Great news! I say congrats to Beenox too, they deserve it!

not to happy about that news. i didnt like SD at all :(

That's some great news, dusk20, I would at least give these guys a chance. For what it's worth they did take Spider-Man in a new direction.

I'll be really upset if this means more linear games. SD was good, but we need free roam.

I wonder where they'll go from here. Will they try free roam? Will they make a sequel to SD with different Spider-Men again? If not, will they do a 616 universe game or something else like Noir? And what kind of graphics will they use? So many questions...

This is exciting imo.

I'd like to see another free roam game, I know someone has prolly answered this but when does Activision reach the end of their rights to Spider-Man? Also, what other developer would you want to see handle Spidey, I wanna see what Rockstar could do with Spider-Man, Ubisoft as well given the fact Assassins Creed is badass

Either Rockstar or Ubisoft too.
Radical Entertainment is also an option, even though they work under Activision. They made such a great job with Hulk Ultimate Destruction.

I've heard 2017 or something like that. I don't know if I remember it correctly though.

About developer, I don't want either of those to handle Spider-Man. Maybe Rockstar, but definitely not Ubisoft. OK, they get the free roam thing right but the combat and AI in AC is not really the greatest. Rockstar could make a great New York but I think the rest would be quite meh. Such as the combat, the missions etc.

I'm actually very happy Beenox will keep doing Spidey games and I see a little glimpse of hope in the future.

However, I hope they ditch the whole Amazing graphic style. Never been a fan of it. I'd prefer it more in the lines of Noir (but with more colours of course). Or something more like the Ultimate dimension.

Let's hope the new costume looks like this :woot:

I wouldn't mind if they just kept the free roam to the movie games.
