Spider-Man: Edge of Time

I love it. Great modern interpretation. If you're into minutia, than I see why fanboys are complaining, but to be honest, I would think and hope fanboys would see beyond that. If anybody should, it should be them. If things like 'underarmour' looking mesh between gloves bother you.... I think you should at least wait to see the suit in the context of the film before complaining. Just like the Superman Returns costume, and batman begins/dark knight costumes, they are interpretations of the original suits that NOBODY would mistake as any other hero. That's the key, imo, the recognizability. They've had far worse interpretations of the suit in every iteration of the hero than this design as far as I'm concerned.

I just realized something: how cool would it be if one of the skins for the next Spidey game is a battle-torn costume? I've always been a sucker for one of those. Didn't the PS1 games had them?

Battle torn is good, but aren't we at the stage now in video games where clothes should be able to be ripped and torn with use. I've plied games where clothes get wet and even that wolverine game base on the movie had clothes and skin damage. Plus it would really be fun to see the expense of these things add up for Peter Parker.

^That could really be something. Maybe like if you get too much damage taken, MJ and Aunt May notice scars all over you when you're just Peter.

I would love this, but only to show Spidey when he takes damage and is about to die in the game, and not permanently through the rest of the game. It worked for Arkham Asylum considering the story, but not so much here.

It's there in Enter Electro, not in the first one

I also want the chance to change between Peter Parker and Spider-Man on the fly. And even web swing as either. I mean we should have to maintain a secret identity as a superhero and it would really make you have to look for a place to swap in and out of costume.

That would be cool, Ah how I wish Rockstar would make a Spider-Man in the same vein as GTA 4

Yeah GTA 4 had such great scale to the city itself.

I want a open world spidey game! Also, story-wise, they should try adapting comic stories (Kraven's Last Hunt maybe?) to add nostalgia.

No, thank you. I don't really see the point of adapting storylines in video games if we already know what will happen. We know Kraven will shoot himself, so why try to fight him? Why try to rescue Gwen when we know she's going to die? We already know the symbiote will unite with Eddie Brock and that Doc Ock is the Master Planner.

I'd rather just see a brand-new story that is complex, yet easy to follow, engaging, and not afraid to take risks, the last bit being something even Arkham Asylum couldn't do.

^They should definitely nod to the history between the characters via dialogue and biographies, though. And for God's sake, I'd like the villains to be ALIVE by the end of the game (comic book movies and TV shows could do the same)

I could do with nods and mentions. And what do you mean you want to see the villains alive? Outside the movie games, most of the villains live by the end of the game.

You're right. It's actually only been done a few times in the original comic book games. I just think it's a trend that needs to end. I hate how in the movies they build up a villain only to kill him off (in many cases it's done in extremely lame fashion) . It's stupid even when they do it in the comics, because you know at some point they're going to come back.

Beenox just announced that this new Spider-Man game is slated for the 4th quarter of this year!!! So excited. Details coming soon.

Pretty damn short turn around. I think we can go ahead and chalk this up as yet another mediocre Spider-Man title that will once again pale in comparison to Batmans title.

Spidey cant catch a damn break. His new movie looks all kinds of s**t-tastic and now hes going to get another poorly developed and rushed game.

Yeah, not going to get too excited about this... Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions was a very average game, and the fact that so many people loved it just highlights to me how low the standard for a 'good' Spidey game has dropped.

Considering it came off after the craptastic Web of Shadows, the praise the next game got is understandable. Now? Who knows.

What's your definition of a "good" spidey game then?

A combo of GTA and Assasins creed
A GTA like open world game with more to do would be nice, but to be honest, by the time WoS came around, the open world Spidey game had become a bit tiresome. It was a refresher to get a level based game again.

That is probably another reason why SD was well-received. People were just getting sick of free roam and wanted something more structured but varied, not to mention the nostalgia factor from the PS1 games.

And considering the demand of free roam is starting to increase, switching it up with level-based games isn't such a bad idea.

Yeah, call me picky, but I don't believe you should praise something for being comparitvely better than a predecessor if the end result is still mediocre.

Something with the same level of dedication of Batman Arkham Asylum. Not the same format or style, but what Rocksteady did with that game was analyse Batman, in all it's various media forms, and looked at what format of game would make it work. They didn't just go 'lets slap Batman in a huge sandbox' or 'lets give him loads of levels in different environments so we can include all the most popular characters', they looked at the things people want to be able to DO as Batman and how Batman should look and feel.

Now, with Spider-Man, the closest i've gotten to that was Spider-Man 2, because at the time that was almost revolutionary. A free roam world where you got to be the Superhero with a city at your disposal, which is something no comic fan had really gotten a chance to do yet.

The thing that Spider-Man games are missing is heart. It's been years since i've played a Spidey game that feels like the people who made it truly have a deep love for the character, or at the very least an understanding of the character. SD came close to an accurate depiction of Spidey, but they had no vision at all. They didn't portray a Spider-Man they loved, they took a straw poll and showed all the Spideys. It was like they were either indecisive about which Spidey to base a game around or they were under pressure from Activision to include as much fan service as possible.

Then theres the whole level design that was essentially based around button mashing, with very basic platforming. The only thing I think they got spot on with that game was some of the characterisation and the cel-shaded look for Amazing Spidey.

Personally, I think Free-Roam is Spideys domain, I think that just works for his character. Taking Spidey out of NYC is like taking Batman out of Gotham, it's just their environment. However, since Spider-Man 2, has any game actually developed on the concept of a free Roam spidey? I don't know about you guys, but if the core swinging and fighting mechanics were detailed and solid, and there was plenty to do, I personally would still get a kick out of playing around as Spidey. But what the developers would need to then do is think "Apart from swinging around New York and beating up thugs, what would TRULY make you feel like Spider-Man?" If they're not doing that, then they're not doing their job.
