Homecoming Spider-Man Homecoming (2017) General Discussion - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Part 113

There are only three things about the film that I am on the fence about, as I loved it otherwise.
1) The lack of a direct Uncle Ben reference. I totally understand the argument that they wanted to avoid mentioning him due to how much he was emphasized in the previous films (and since the TASM franchise was criticized for being too similar to what had just come before, it is clear that making a unique Spider-Man film was a top priority). However, I still think a more clear, direct reference would have been appreciated. I feel like there are enough hints in both this film and Civil War that the origin and motivation are unchanged, and Ben's presence and impact on Peter can be inferred in several places (the scene with May after the Ferry, his "interrogation" of Aaron Davis, his refusal to accept Toomes' truce) but I still really think the sequel needs to establish what exactly happened there.

As someone who used to be very underwhelmed by that decision, the thought occurred to me that they might get to Uncle Ben in future movies. His character and his philosophy are still an important part of Peter's character and I don't think they'll forsake them in the films to come. At least, that's what I hope.

Heck, the way Homecoming ended, you have an obvious way for Ben to be brought up when
May and Peter have the talk about him being Spider-Man, either in Infinity War or Homecoming 2.

Question: you watch Spider-Man Homecoming, and you are filled with energy wanting to be Spider-Man, or in this case, play him. You decide to play a Spidey video game that will give you the same feeling you had wanting to be Holland's Spider-Man, or aspects from it. What game(s) do you play?

I'd say Ultimate Spider-Man would be the closest thing.

Ultimate Spider-Man. Little gem of a game.

I found the CGI for the Spider-Man sequences seemed to look more fake for this film than the other Spider-Man films. Most of the time when Spidey was on screen, he didn't quite look like a real person, and when he moved about and did acrobatics, it looked computer generated.

Agreed. Especially on the ferry.

This looks straight up like a video game

How can the CGI for a Spider-Man film, produced 15 years after the original, still not look much better, and in some cases worse? Sometimes even when he wasn't doing much at all but standing around, he looked computer generated, compared to the real practical costumes from the previous movies. His movements should also seem a bit more fluid and natural, and not like an animated character.

Definitely do as SkullDevil and First Avenger and play Ultimate Spider-Man, PC/PS2/XBox/GameCube.

TASM2 had better CGI, that's for sure.

Yes, the CGI wasn't as good. Has anyone stopped to think about the budget differences? I think they did pretty well for keeping the budget so tight. No NYC swinging, which is something to definitely look forward to, especially because he's afraid of heights!

That's not a gripe by the way, I think it's logical for him to be that way instead of "Oh hey, I have my powers, let's swing to the top of the empire state building!"

What are you all talking about? Spider-Man looked amazing in the movie. I know they put some CGI to enchance his eyes or something, but it was mostly costume.

Yeah, this was the cheapest movie in the franchise by a decent margin.

The budget on the Planet of the Apes movies was less than Homecoming and the CG there was remarkable. They just decided to not use a practical suit as much as they should have

It was hit-or-miss for me. I do hope they improve it in the future.

I felt the CGI was pretty good. I think it was done by Sony Imageworks, who are not ILM or WETA of course but they did good here for me.

They've been perfecting those apes for a while now, I'm not surprised it turned out great. There were a few scenes in Homecoming that looked like a video game, the ferry scene in particular. But overall it was still good, nothing as bad as people are making it out to be. But overall it wasn't the best Spider-Man in terms of CGI, tough to rank #1 with 5 other movies and a cameo performance to compete with, lol!

Really? The CGI in Apes was amazing I thought it was 10x higher than SMH.

It's really frustrating to see SMH looking so cheap (from the cgi to the poor photography) when the studios knew/suspected this movie would reach at least 700M. Maybe it's because they know the audience is satisfied with weak CGI so they don't push and try to make something better.

Apes budget was 25 million less

What would you guys consider to be the Spider-Man movie with the best CGI?

I don't say if Homecoming is better than Spider-Man 2. I can say, however, I think Homecoming is very rewatchable.
I mean, Spidey 2 was too (I've seen that one four times on theaters), but this one is a bit lighter, more fun, Peter Parker is a much more interesting character this time. I think Homecoming works for me because it is closer to the Spider-Man I knew when I was a kid.

Yup! Same.
