We have you at a disadvantage, dear readers, for we've seen Spider-Man 3 and nearly all of you have not. The purpose of this feature is not to spoil that movie for you but to suggest, based on what we know happens in it, where the franchise could head in a possible fourth installment. Director Sam Raimi left plenty of "Easter eggs" for fans throughout Spidey 3, but we'll analyze those hints after you've all had a chance to see the movie, which opens May 4th.
We have suggestions for who could succeed star Tobey Maguire and director Raimi if both men choose not to return for a fourth pic. We'll also suggest who Peter Parker's new love interest could be if Mary Jane Watson is not brought back (or, if Raimi and Maguire don't return, Kirsten Dunst opts out as well). Obviously, the sequel's villains will be discussed as well.
So let's start with the director's chair ...
A NEW WEBMASTER:
Screw Ant-Man. Let British filmmaker Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) direct Spider-Man instead. He has the same frenetic style as Sam Raimi and, like Raimi, he's a movie buff and fanboy fave adept at infusing comedy into genre material. He's also young and inexpensive (compared to Raimi) so think of all the films Sony could get out of him at a bargain price? Wright seems like the right man for the job to us.
Another possibility could be J.J. Abrams, the powerhouse behind Lost and Alias. But with his TV projects, as well as the next Star Trek movie and The Dark Tower, Abrams may simply be too preoccupied to take on another fanboy-friendly mega-project.
Robert Rodriguez is no stranger to comic book adaptations (Sin City) and audience-friendly franchise fare (Spy Kids) but his not being a DGA member would likely preclude him from any serious consideration by the studio.
YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD REPLACEMENT:
Jake Gyllenhaal has often been mentioned as a potential replacement for Tobey "Oh, my back!" Maguire, and he even reportedly screen-tested for the role back for the first Spidey film. Gyllenhaal would be a very different kind of Peter Parker than Maguire, cutting a more confident and physically imposing figure. He'd be more like the 1970s and '80s Peter, who was a university student and newsroom professional by then.
Shia LaBeouf in Transformers.
Gyllenhaal could capture that more mature but still vulnerable side of Peter, someone who has grown up in the years since the first trilogy. His weak point may be the humor the role requires, which leads us to our next pick: Justin Long. Yes, Long may be that smug "Mac guy," but his performances in Accepted and Galaxy Quest have shown that he can play the cool nerd, which is what Peter Parker really is when you get down to it.
While it's too bad that Emile Hirsch is playing Speed Racer, there's always man of the moment Shia LaBeouf, currently topping the box office with Disturbia. His forthcoming turns in Transformers and Indiana Jones IV are two pretty big votes of studio confidence in his ability to help carry a big franchise movie. Like Maguire, LaBeouf is a respected actor and has an amiable everyman screen presence.
WHO ELSE WANTS TO GET KISSED IN THE RAIN?
It's time for Peter to let Mary Jane Watson go. Mary Jane and Peter's relationship is one spawned by young love but, as people age, those passions that seemed like they'd never die, well, peter out (no pun intended). Let's say for the sake of conversation that MJ survives Spider-Man 3. As she has done many times in the comics, Mary Jane and Peter could take a nice, long break while she goes off modeling in Europe or California. Seeing as how MJ's career isn't exactly sky-rocketing in Manhattan, a change of scenery could do her good. It doesn't mean that she's permanently written out of the series; it just gives Spidey a chance to ensnare another pretty young thang in his web. So what other love interests from the comics could be in the next movie?
Gwen Stacy: If she survives Spidey 3 then she is the most obvious candidate. The powers-that-be can't very well introduce Spidey's other most famous love interest and then not do anything with her ... can they? Next time out Gwen could be something more interesting than the other woman. She also has a policeman dad, Captain Stacy, who could be slain by the film's villain. Of course, the question is whether the filmmakers will kill off Gwen since her death is the most famous thing about her. Unfortunately, Gwen's fatal fall from the bridge was already poached for the first movie so they'd have to come up with another manner of doing it. If Bryce Dallas Howard doesn't reprise her role as Gwen then how about Katherine Heigl from Grey's Anatomy?
Bryce Dallas Howard as Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man 3.
Black Cat: Although using this character invites inevitable (and possibly derogatory) comparisons to Batman and Catwoman, it might be nice to take a break from the middle-aged mad scientist villain next time in favor of Felicia Hardy, a.k.a. the Black Cat. Sexpot du jour Scarlett Johansson could work, although there are other contenders (such as Jessica Biel) who might be just as good in the role. The filmmakers could have some fun with Black Cat's bad luck powers rubbing off on Spidey during fights.
