Spike Lee To Direct 'Oldboy' remake

Well I don't personally have quite the reverence for the movie that some people do. In some ways I like the manga more, but that's mainly because it is a manga and there are certain things about the manga I find cooler. I like that the manga is like this really cool, urban black/white film noir story.

However, I can't see Smith/Spielberg doing either version justice. That they are going for the manga version kind of proves they won't do anything that's bold or really controversial.

Even when Spielberg does "dark" stuff he always wraps it up with a bow at the end. Look at how unambiguously he ended Minority Report. Blade Runner it was not.
I am pretty sure there was plenty of discussion regarding the ending of MR. Not with how the conflicts and plots were resolved, but whether that it be taken literally and/or if it happened at all.

Also, Munich. Hardly an ending with a bow tied on it, no? Hell, people can even argue A.I. had a semi-bleak conclusion.

Munich in my opinion was Spielbergs best attempt at a "dark" film. So I still have some faith that he can pull off this "Old Boy" adaptation.

So you're calling Shindler's List an attempt at dark filmmaking? Or Saving Private Ryan?

i wouldn't call Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, or Munich as fictionalized dark films because they were based on real events.

Dark as in..Clockwork Orange or something; Spielberg hasn't done that before.

Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan I wouldnt say are the kind of dark Oldboy would be like. There are glimmers of hope in those movies which makes them sad and depressing more than dark. Munich on the other hand is pretty dark, characters being driven to the edge and then dangled over the side. Theres not a lot of hope involved, just revenge (in a way)

Although I agree that Clockwork Orange is a more appropriate analogy

Third act of Munich was terrible, with that God awful, amateurish love scene.

gareeeeeaaatttt so they're now ripping off the Great ZINDA... ZZIINNNDDAAAA OLDBOY HOOOONNNN

I can't believe they're doing this without giving Sanjay Gupta and Sanjay Dutt due credit for coming up with the original concept in writing for their superior film...

I thought Munich was superb all the way through but I agree with what you are saying.

So what is the motive in the Manga ? Who is the enemy ? Is it more or less action ?

I love Oldboy, Will Smith, and Steven Spielberg. My mind is open. There will be no b****ing out of me.

I'm looking forward to this.

If they remake it, its not going to be gorey, bloody, and etc. I mean come on its going to be sooooo watered down its not even gonna be worth seeing. They are going to put their own twist onto the story, Thumbs down in my book.

I have the first volume of the manga. It came with the superduper metal boxset special edition of Oldboy. It was pretty good, but it differs from the film(atleast so far. I haven't bothered checking out more of it.)

But really, Spielberg is better off adapting the manga anyway. If they tried to remake the film, they would just wind up changing alot of it anyway.

yes... obviously that is not only the truth but FACT... and it's from the post it's clear, ZINDA CAME FIRST... see... it's just there... written as is, ZINDA IS THE FATHER

Zinda was written far far far far before any oldman youngboy crap copy nonsense came out by THE one and only Sanjay and Sanjay... Sanjay Gupta and Sanjay Farid Khan Dutt... one had to spend some time in jail before being able to make it but they wrote this back in late 90s just hoping to get a chance to fix on some financing before Dutt got into trouble with the Law, so they only had chance to make recently film it is good.

Oldboy the comic was in 1996, Oldboy the movie was in 2003, Zinda was in 2006. Thats all the FACTS I need. Sorry, but someone beat him to it

The manga's original run was from 96-98 though. So ...

as if they're not going to make changes to the manga

Never said they weren't. I just said that they're better off adapting the manga. Changes would be made regardless of what source they're using, but if they take from the manga, i think it'll be less controversial, if at all.

Not to mention that Zinda's visuals are a pale mimicry of Oldboy. I saw some youtube clips, and man I was embarrassed for that production team. They had no shame in stealing every frame/angle/set-up for SEVERAL shots.

I would say less action. The manga is a lot more cerebral, dense, and talky. The hypnotism is a big part of the manga as well. I mean there's action in the manga too.

The enemy in the bad guy is named Yakinuma and the lead is Goto. Goto and Yakinuma were in the same primary school together. Yakinuma was an isolated outcast that was weird and everyone hated. During a song class Yakinuma sang a song and Goto was deeply moved. I'm not totally sure why but this offended Yakinuma, I think maybe because Goto sort of forgot that he was moved deeply by the song. Yakinuma also had this strange obsession/attraction to Goto. But there wasn't anything like he was sleeping with his sister and she killed herself because she thought she was pregnant becuase of something the main guy said.

Also the girl Goto gets with isn't his daughter.

I think we should change the title to this damn thread. They're adapting not remaking.

First off **** Blade Runner... There I said it... What you should of said was, 2001: Space Odyssey it was not. :)

Secondly, why does it really matter if its bold or controversial, all I care about is if its good.
