Spike Lee To Direct 'Oldboy' remake

Conservative Media hates everything.

They'd roast Oldboy. Gleefully.

Having a villian who isn't exactly as deep and methodical as Americans would like to "justify" his actions would fuel the GTA-esque attacks on entertainment mediums we see all the time.

This. Some people would tear apart this film.

They'd pick Matthew Vaughan over Danny Boyle?

Spike needs a hit though, that's on everything.

I thought this remake was good and dead. Just, please no. No-no-no-no-no-no-no. :shia:

Spike Lee rumored.

Meh. I think a remaking this is not even a matter if it's necessary, it's that the original seems so foreign that I dont think itll carry over well especially if it isnt made as an indie

Probably get watered down too. Abig part of Old Boy is the sadomasochism, lots and lots of it gleefully thrown on screen. I don't like Spike Lee. His movies have 20 minute conversions like a bad student play. With that said though, I think a adoption can turn out well if it isn't a straight up copy paste, otherwise it's just pointless. Given how Spike Lee is so predominantly centered around black culture I think a setting of that nature could turn out quite interesting and very diffrent from the original movie.

If Spike directs I'm interested.I think he could pull it off.Plus I'm yearning for a new Spike Lee Joint.

Spike would definitely spark my interest if he does the remake. Just please not will smith

hopefully this will get made and be a big hit.. lots of action, political intrigue.. and the ghost-walk shots spike likes to do..

You guys do know that Oldboy is based off of a manga, right?

No way they would do the twist. No way would they have the balls to do it. If they do, props. But it's more likely they would do the first twist rather than the big one that makes us all need to take a shower by the end of it.

I think they would...if they make it like a 5 million dollar indie.

But a studio pic, even a dramatic one? Nah i dont think they would do it either.

Does the manga have the same ending as the movie? Because this could be a manga adaptation not a remake

I agree. I love Will Smith, but he wouldn't have the balls to do a movie so risky.

Like I said, no studio would have the balls to do it. Also, using the twist in the Korean movie would kill any word of mouth the movie would have.

Spielberg would never do an incest scene or someone eating a squid... i dont see how this is gonna work in hollywood the culture is different... whats he gonna do eat a gerbil instead?

Ridiculous, pointless remake. If morons are too braindead to watch Oldboy because they don't want to read subtititles then they don't deserve to behold its badassery.

Eating a squid doesn't seem that weird or out there.Spielberg can't be that uptight.

In the Korean movie, the lead actor actually ate a live squid, which is considered a delicacy in some parts of Asia (or so I've read). I don't think there is any facet of American culture that would be OK with having an actor eat a live animal.

As far as the incest aspect goes, I think it could be done without. When Spielberg's adaptation was being considered, it was said to be closer to the manga, which didn't have incest. So unless the manga just sucks, I'd imagine a closer adaptation would be a sufficiently different film from the original.

It Is Official Spike Lee To Direct 'Oldboy' For Mandate Pictures

Los Angeles (July 11, 2011) – Mandate Pictures announced today that Spike Lee (Inside Man) will direct OLDBOY, a remake of the highly-acclaimed South Korean film. Mark Protosevich has adapted the screenplay and will co-produce. Roy Lee and Doug Davison (The Departed, The Grudge) will produce. The film is a Vertigo Entertainment/40 Acres & A Mule Production. Mandate President Nathan Kahane will executive produce.
“It’s a great honor to put this special project into the hands of such a gifted writer and iconic director,” said Kahane.
OLDBOY tells the story of a man who is kidnapped and imprisoned on his daughter’s birthday. For fifteen years, he is held captive, and, upon his release, must begin his journey to find the reason for his imprisonment. He soon finds out that his kidnapper has plans for him more tortuous than his solitary confinement. The original film, released in 2003, directed by Chan-wook Park won the Grand Prize Jury Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.
Spike Lee and Mark Protosevich are represented by CAA. Dan Freedman, SVP of business affairs, negotiated the deals for Mandate.
