Spike Lee To Direct 'Oldboy' remake

The news that this is being remade by Spielberg and Smith is just as if not more so unsettling than the movie itself.

If they HAD to remake a film from Chan-wook Park's revenge films, then I would totally be interested in a Lady Vengeance.

Plus, it they're gonna do that hallway fight, they gotta do it exactly the same. One continuous shot, going down that hallway. That was really just the most awesome part of that whole movie. That and the ending.

True sir very true. I just look at those three movies and say Spielberg CAN do dark. He can do nasty. I mean this is the guy that made people afraid to swim. And Will, who wouldn't be the first person to pop into my head to play this character, has just gotten better and better with his acting, so I say we'll see.

I'm boycotting Will Smith for awhile...I have yet to see the original Oldboy but I heard it's pretty epic. I've been wanting to see it for the longest time...Hopefully before this remake gets off the ground. I don't think the remake could be that bad. I mean Scorsese remade Internal Affairs and that was pretty good.

Eh, outside of the over-top gratuitous violence and the ridiculous ending its perfectly fine... Spielberg would probably make a better film to be honest, the only thing that worries me is Will Smith who annoys me now

My biggest worry is Speilberg, he hasn't been relevent in years IMHO.

He hasn't been relevant? This makes me laugh, he's one of the most powerful men in Hollywood, his name is attached to so many projects its ridiculous, anything with the name Dreamworks is connected to him.

Secondly, he's a master-filmmaker, let me repeat that a master, he's set the stage for modern American film. Munich is one of the best films to come out of American-Hollywood cinema in the last 10 years.

Have you rewatched "Oldboy", its ridiculously gimmicky, its biggest strength is the cinematography, the story is just really bad in some places and over the top. Its great the first itme, not so great the second, and I think Spielberg could really improve on it.

"Oldboy" has nice ideas, but the execution was bad.

The movie is totally overrated.

With Spielberg there will be emotion. Something the original lacked.

Its funny most people misinterpret my posts but I need to state this Spielberg is not my favorite director, far from it, and I find myself very rarely watching his films now a days, however every film he puts even if its mediocre like Indiana Jones 4 is better than 80% of the crap that comes out of Hollywood, he's a man at the top of his game and has the resources to hire the best.

Secondly, I loved Oldboy the first time I saw it and then I saw it again. Do I think Spielberg can top a first viewing of Oldboy, no but then again he's not really a gimmick director. What I meant was that he can make a film that I'd want watch more than once with a film that not entirely based on simply the mystery (which is ******ed when you think about it). Oldboy is a well-made film, however it caters toward the cult-film watcher who's more interested in gimmicks then an over-all well made film.

Will the film have that sadistic edge with some of the most creative and over top torture/killing as the original probably not. Will it be less cheesy, more atmospheric, and better characters? Probably... So those are my reasons for why I think Spielberg could make a better film.

As for being insulting, I don't think Spielberg going in thinking he can make a better film, he'll make a different film ala Departed to Internal Affairs(I liked IA better)

The whole point of Oldboy is the twists and turns. and they are shocking.

Unless Spielberg can surprise me, this is not your typical summer movie.

I do have to say that Lady Vengence was the better movie within the trilogy.

I find the idea of Oldboy really ripe for a great story, a man locked away for 15 years only to find his entire life gone, I mean the mystery is great and all, but the story potential is very underused in Oldboy.

That's why I think Lady Vengence is the better movie. Still stylized but a bit more consistent in the narrative.

With every movie, you can tell that the director was still learning his craft. Mr. vengence was good, not great. Oldboy is great but uneven. And Lady Vengence is about right.

I never said that Oldboy was one of the greatest movies ever. I'm aware of my problems with it and the directors other works but I still dug it all the same. He isn't relevant to me because I haven't really cared about any of his films in a long time...I don't feel that his heart is in it anymore. He seems totally bored with filmmaking. The orginal was good and a remake sounds useless to me, a Speilberg directed remake sounds like a disaster but I'll watch it because Will Smith.

I agree. I think Spielberg is bored now. That's why I don't what to think of his 'TIN TIN' movie. If it doesn't have that old school Ambllin vibe, then it'll suck.

This is just not happening... can anyone see Will Smith doing sex scenes with a girl 10-15 years younger than him? I mean unless they are hapassing the remake... but then it isn't a remake if they make drastic changes now is it?

I love Spielberg, but they will never have the balls to do the same ending.

Spielberg has been known to avoid ending that are too much of a downer, so this doesn't look good for Oldboy remake. Personally, I think it's a bad idea.

No way they'll follow through with most of the stuff in Oldboy.
They'll keep the basic plot of jerk gets put away by an unknown for 15 years, freed and has 5 days to find and kill said jerk. All with the help of a cute girl. Thats where the movie will end though the dark twisted stuff will be cut out.

Sounds like crap, which is perfect for Will since his recent movies have great ideas but are poorly done(I am Legend, Hancock).

I don't think they will definitely leave out the big twist. Munich didn't really have a typical Hollywood ending or whatever, but not a lot of people saw it either. If they push it as a movie for the art house Academy pleasing crowd instead of as a popcorn film like War of The Worlds they could probably get away with it.

The thing is, I don't think a mainstream audience will digest all the little things about the twist besides the act itself.

Hahahahaha.... Wow, people say I'm insulting a movie... I think you've really insulted the depth of Munich since its not really that empowering to the Jews and Spielberg got a lot of flack from the Jewish community for it.
