Spike Lee To Direct 'Oldboy' remake

If they kept that intact a lot of people would probably start dry heaving in the theatre once it was revealed. Which would be hilarious.

Now Brolin vs Bale is something I would want to see.

Lee is coming to speak at my college on the 29th. My professor is trying to get a private Q&A with the TFA majors. I'll have to ask him about this film.
 What college do you attend?

I would be surprised too if they keep that twist but I want them to do it. I feel like the film will lose so much if they don't keep it.

Lazy casting but my choice for the female lead will be Jennifer Lawrence.

Okay, we got the private Q&A. And i don't think I even have to pay for tickets.

Interesting. I can see her rocking the role. Still curious IF that twist will be there though but given that they're looking at someone [blackout]young[/blackout] like Mara then signs point to the twist being there.

I’m curious to see whether the new material they will add in the movie is completely original or if it's from the manga that Park didn’t add in his film but I'd be surprised if they keep the twist since it's something Park specifically added to his film.

Not surprised that Mara is at the top of the wishlist but I bet people is going to complain about her choice of roles, first a remake of NOES, a new adaptation of TGWTDT and now perhaps this one.

If this happens, she'll be the "remake queen". :D

I just hope that they go all out for this specially the action/fight scenes and they keep the twist. It's not in the Manga though so who knows... I'm curious too if they will make the villain even crazier or more sympathetic.

For those that have read the manga, is the movie stronger largely because of the twist and ending? I'm trying to picture the story without it and I'm always left with a lesser narrative.

There are few stories in which everything practically falls squarely on the shoulders of the climax. This is true for Oldboy in every sense. The emotional impact of the twist hit so damn hard.

Those that read the manga can confirm but from what I know the twist at the end is not there and the reason for the villain's actions were different.

I wonder what the age difference between the hero and the female lead in the manga? Because the age difference in the casting seems to suggest that they're following the movie's pattern.

:csad: NOES was yeah, not really good but working with Fincher is a step in the right direction and being a lead in one of his films is wonderful, she impress me with the little I've seen from her in TGWTDT.

I heard that the manga is quite tame and less violent compare to Park's film (the film wasn't that violent either but still) so Lee better be imaginative with the action scenes that are going to be in the movie and for **** sake, don't copy the one take corridor fight scene.

With Mara being cast, a lot of forums are getting somewhat excited that Lee may actually do the infamous twist now. He would be the one director that would take that plunge, unless the studio forbade it.

Okay, the TFA's and I met privately with Spike Lee last night. He was a very cool and down to Earth guy. We were all expecting him to be not so nice given the talk around. But he was great. I asked him some questions about Oldboy. I did the best I could:

- He will be shooting Oldboy on film, segwaying into that from him talking about how digital filmmaking has changed cinema and people wanting to be filmmakers

- He said he's been wanting to work with Josh Brolin for five years and they never got to work together until now

- He said he likes the original film (he's a very blunt guy by the way) and even asked me if I saw Lady Vengeance

- I asked him the ending has been kept and mentioned given the nature of Hollywood, would they go with such a thing, but he said he can't give it away

- Oh, and he still really wants to make an Inside Man 2 with Denzel, but for some reason, the studio doesn't want to do it.

- The hardest part of making a movie is still getting it funded

He also gave us a list of films to watch. Some of which I've seen but not all. I stood right by him when he was mentioning them. Afterwards, when he was leaving I managed to shake his hand.

Then the main event was great. He gave a lot of great advice. Especially with regards to the state of Hollywood and films today. he said eventually "people can only go to the well so many times until they stop" or something like that.

Then at the end I got his autograph on my ticket and I shook his hand again.

Yeah, the age difference between her and Brolin points to them possibly doing the twist. I don't know though if the age gap is in the manga as well. He's definitely one of the few that has the balls to do it. Tarantino or Fincher also comes to mind.

Those are good stuff! Nice to hear that he was cool with you guys.

Mara passed:

@krolljvar
Justin Kroll

Quick casting note, looks like OLDBOY is still looking for that female lead as Rooney Mara has passed on the part.

Official synopsis from the studio:

http://collider.com/synopses-2012-lionsgate-films-the-evil-dead-remake-spike-lee-old-boy/123549/

Cast: Josh Brolin

Director: Spike Lee

Writer: Mark Protosevich

Synopsis:

A man kidnapped and imprisoned on his daughter’s birthday is held captive for fifteen years. Upon his release he embarks on an obsessive mission to find the reason for his imprisonment and soon finds out that his kidnapper has plans for him more tortuous than solitary confinement.

Sounds exactly the same as the synopsis of the Korean version.

Colin Firth was offered the villain role. It could be interesting...

BREAKING: Colin Firth Offered Villain Role In OLDBOY

ColinFirth.jpg

At one point actor Colin Firth was attached to play a key role in Oldboy director Park Chan-wook's English language debut, Stoker. That didn't work out but now Firth may very well end up playing the villain role in Spike Lee's upcoming remake of Park's Oldboy.

Twitch has learned that an offer is out to Firth for the part of Adrian, which means that - should he accept - he will be stepping into the villain role opposite Josh Brolin.

This is a surprising choice but a good one, I think. Though Firth is best known for playing a variety of good guys and proper gentlemen he is a talented and diverse actor, one more than capable of going dark when the material calls for it and he will certain provide the surface layer of polished civility that this particular role requires as counterpoint to the more brutish antihero in the lead.

Firth is a fascinating choice. If he gets it I can't wait to see what he does with it.

Colin Firth is a great choice! I'm starting to get excited for this project.

“We are planning to shoot ‘Old Boy’ in March and that should start pre-production in late January,” he said. “This is a brand new script by Mark Protosevich. It is very similar to the film, but Protosevich has added new elements that will throw off the audience who have seen the original movie because there are new characters and new situations that present themselves in a way that change the story but eventually go in the same direction. The ending will be something audiences–especially fans of the original movie–will be very happy with. Some may consider it a bit darker.” He added that “there’s going to be a different interpretation of the hallway scene that is hopefully going to be Spike’s signature moment in the movie that he wants to show in a way that has never been seen in an action movie.”
