[SPOILERS] "More enjoyable than Transformers 2"? New Reviews!

That's exactly the point:

No wonder Paramount Pictures refused to show the film to serious critics, limiting advance screenings to drooling fanboys who would agreeably drive up the Rotten Tomatoes score in exchange for access and a bucket of popcorn.

From Peter Howell at the Toronto Star.

All the major bashing including from most fanboys about Transformers 2 didn't stop the general audience from making that a **** ton of money though. I still think a lot of the hate is because people wanted super serious action and got something that was purposefully geared towards kids, to make GI Joe more aware to these newer generations still at the age where they play with toys and whatnot.

I just have a hard time believing the studio/director would be afraid of bad reviews when, for the most part the GA sees what they think looks good via trailers rather than critics.

Hey, sometimes the magic works Figs, sometimes it doesn't.

And Transformers 2 still has a lot of drooling adult fanboys as well, so whatever. I was not one of those and I pretty much trashed it in my official review.

Just saying though, GI JOE wasn't insulated enough like Transformers so they did the no advance screenings strategy, and hey it might work. We'll see.

I mean look at Bruno. That was a gigantic disappointment for the studio after Borat. People paid top dollar to get that movie made after Borat and it turns out to be abysmal.

I'd take dog humping over any of the GI JOE jokes to be honest. I knew exacly what kind of humor Bay was going to put in TF2. He catered to adults, teens, and kids.

And stoners. They laid it on too thick. I dug the humor in the first TF but here in the second it was too much. GI JOE humor wasn't a "look at us, we're with the times!" sort of thing like they tried to display in TF2.

G.I Joe: ROS now has a 39% on Rotten Tomatoes. Steadily going down it seems.

Whatever, I'm still watching this. Sure it looks dumb and cheesy but fun nonetheless.

The fact that this quote comes from a half-star review from one of Rotten Tomatoes' "top critics" seems to add further fuel to the argument that mainstream critics are out of touch:

"Formerly a real American hero, "G.I. Joe" is no longer a hero (it's a group) or American."

http://www.nypost.com/seven/08072009/entertainment/movies/say_it_aint_so__g_i__joe_183448.htm

OK, so he wants to whine about how GI Joe is not an all-American unit anymore to give his opinion "fanboy legitimacy." But then he goes on to say something as dumb as "And he's not even one guy anymore." Seriously, WTF? Why did some people act like we should expect good reviews from a GI Joe movie when the critics are already dismissive of it just from the source material? I mean c'mon, if you want to rip the movie a new one, you should at least know well enough that GI Joe has been a TEAM, not a MAN, since the 1980's. :o

If you're an enraged fan using the tomatometer to back up your pre-conceived opinion about this movie, I think it'd be wise to note that most of these critics don't have any respect for the source material to begin with. Take it as you will, but I'd rather see this movie myself and make my own opinion about it.

Its pretty obvious that this guy based his entire review off the slogan "A Real American Hero" and just kind of ran with it.

I also keep reading the played out analogy "It was like watching someone else playing a video game".

Critics can be even more ridiculous than what they are reviewing sometimes.

Rotten Tomatoes has released its consensus:

Consensus: While fans Hasbro toy franchise may revel in a bit of nostalgia, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is largely a cartoonish, over-the-top action fest propelled by silly writing, inconsistent visual effects, and merely passable performances.

Why am I not suprised to see an 80% last Monday on Tomatoes only to come back and see a 30% on Friday. These drops are unreal, just when I thought there would be one summer film that would salvage SOMETHING this season, it turns into another pre-teen fanboy film. I don't need another franchise like that personally. Looks like I am going to have to pass.

It was 80-100% when there were like 5 phony plant reviews.

And stoners. They laid it on too thick. I dug the humor in the first TF but here in the second it was too much. GI JOE humor wasn't a "look at us, we're with the times!" sort of thing like they tried to display in TF2.

Yeah but the GI JOE humor wasnt for anyone...unless they were stoned. Since I was stoned, I laughed.....a little.

But I cant remember one decent line from the movie...wheres TF2, I can remember plenty. And I LOLed pretty hard in that one.

Dude, my theater laughed at the Joe humor? So they were all stoned I guess?

And I've mentioned I laughed at the humor in TF2. It was funny, but you gotta admit, some of it had no place in the movie. I mean, a bag of weed in a toy movie? That's too far. And the tazer in the balls, while funny, it looked it came out of something on comedy central, not a toy movie.

So, you KNEW he was gonna put hairy ass and balls in your face and you still indulged it? Wow...

i didnt laugh at any TF2 jokes.. but i could see how it was funny, and i enjoyed the mom.
pretty much silly/outdated jokes but done with a funny/witty cast.

whereas gi joe was silly/outdated jokes done by dull actors.

I'm reading some of these reviews and they are pretty godawful. At least some of the quotes on the front page at Rottentomatoes.

I'm pretty sure I'll like this a lot, seems like most of the fan complaints are typical fanboy whining about changes with the characters a bit. GI Joe as well as Transformers to me will always be a cartoon and toy line, it's time to grow up a little people.

If thats the case then people should cut DBE slack too right?

Why in movies these days they never use 21st century jokes? Always 80s or 90s jokes.

Stuff like that is why TF2 was GREAT! A GREAT movie.

P.S. sorry for the triple posts.

just have to ask...what silly/outdated jokes did u see in g.i.joe..cuz i didn't see any?

"nice shoes"
"i went through the train...i went over it... you could do that?"
"how are you feeling?.. emotional"
"shoot, fire, busta cap"
"million dollar suites..ok! *falls backwards*"
the whole training sequence...

forgive me for not remembering any more... lol

ya,but don't movies have these cliche one-liners:clown:
Also, gotta had the "hes a real american hero" when Duke was proposing, and the "Knowing is half the battle" from General Hawk, and someother cliche talk from the cartoon. They were just soo lame imo I just rolled my eyes everytime they used a line from the cartoon.
* I don't know if overall if this was better than TF2,but I'll give it had better pacing. Though both suffered from being way too long.

My personal favorite:

"I got to get me one of those!"

It sucked in Batman Begins too. SAME ****ING LINE WORD FOR WORD!
