I was told by more than one scooper that some of the stuff filmed at the University of Westminster is right out of BATMAN #1, but updated for today's times. I won't spoil it, but I will say if you've read that comic book story, you'll probably figure out what I'm talking about.

It has also been confirmed to me that there will be Chicago TDK filming at the end of June/first part of July. That means that the cast and crew will be in the US at the same time Comic Con in San Diego is taking place. Let's put 2+2 together, shall we?

“THE JOKER” from BATMAN #1

The Plot: The Joker steals gems and kills their owners following radio announcements.
Body Count: Four -- 1 by delayed action poison, 1 by poison dart, 1 by off panel poisoning, 1 by gunshot.
Best Kill: Delayed action poison with the rictus grin forming right in front of the police.
Other Mayhem: Uses paralyzing gas on a room full of policemen, tosses Batman off a bridge, takes a sap to Robin’s head and attempts to poison him, and uses paralyzing gas on Batman.
The Outthink: Batman tracks The Joker to his lair using an infrared flashlight on Robin’s footprints.

The Comeuppance: Batman and Robin take The Joker down in a fight at a penthouse and construction site.

Threatening to pull off a crime in front of the police, it’s revealed that he “cheats” to pull off his announced crime. It’s a brilliant ploy on a number of levels as it establishes that The Joker makes his own rules, it’s grim and macabre signaling what kind of crimes The Joker is capable of, it showcases his vanity in announcing the crime instead of pulling it off anonymously, it’s senseless and completely unnecessary to the goal of stealing a jewel, and it establishes early that it’s going to require an extraordinary hero to capture him. The Joker is described as having a “mask-like” face and “hate-filled” eyes. And the art adds to the story as the only times he smiles are when he’s committing or planning or planning evil. The only thing missing from the character is his trademark laugh, which is held off for now.

In addition to the main plot, there’s a minor secondary plot with organized crime jealous of the new addition to the ranks. The Joker fits in neither with criminals nor with normal society. Bill Finger never explicitly said it, but the story carries the seeds for the “rise of the freaks” subplot that will make up more modern tales of Batman’s early days.

We’re given some information on the Joker’s background. He’s a master of chemistry and poison, with his injectable venom and gas gun that paralyzes people. He also claims to be a master of disguise, which considering his look makes sense as a way for him to mingle and perform menial tasks. And he gives Batman quite a physical tussle, sending him over a bridge in a fistfight and Batman and Robin both being necessary to take him down in the end. And The Joker’s physical prowess will be a recurring initial characteristic of The Joker that he challenges Batman physically as well as mentally. It’s also established in the story, where The Joker gets revenge on Judge Drake, that The Joker has spent time in jail, establishing that this is a villain with a history of evil and despite his looks not to be pitied.

It’s worth noting that in addition to the playing card/clown symbolism, vampire symbolism is present in the story. The Joker is a pale skinned villain who makes his lair in an abandoned crypt and in a deserted house. That’s another avenue for depicting the paleness of The Joker that hasn’t been explicitly followed on film yet.

At the end of the story, The Joker is in jail but still planning his escape and more evil. And you only had to wait through two more stories for that promise to be fulfilled.

It isn't.

And all Batman fans need to go read Batman #1 immediately.

It's available in bookstores across the country.

Spammer!

So can any1 tell me what Batman #1 was about?

If I remember correctly, the Joker portion of the story (which I'm sure is the one they're talking about) had The Joker announce on the radio that he will kill specific people, and he does everytime with his Joker gas. Batman and Robin meet up with The Joker, and The Joker nearly kills Robin and beats Batman black and blue. But, Batman and Robin eventually take him down and sends him to jail.

Something like that. It's been a while since I read it.

So i'm still not clear what them filming at a university with the mayor and issue #1 still have in common here? Is it that he announces to the mayor on the radio that he is going to kill him? I do recall the mayor being on the radio in the sides...

I really doubt that we will get two bad guys in two movies using gas on people as their main weapon.
He may do the announcements and follow-up killings, but surely it will have to be a different way other than gas.

It was reported at BOF ages ago that The Joker might use syrringes to administer the toxin. He'd jab them into his victim's face and the muscles would form a smile.

Frankly, I love it. But, who knows?

Death by Botox. Kewl. I almost think it would be better if teh Joker let his victims live, just with the smile disfigurement for the rest of their lives. Or at least let SOME live like that.
With the realism Nolan is going for, we might not see the Joker make anyone smile artificially. He may just carve a smile onto their face with a knife.
Besides, two bad guys who have the medical training to affect people with chemicals, either aeresol or liquid? Man, I hope not.

But with rumors of Scarecrow returning for TDK, maybe Joker's gas is an updated version of Scarecrows.

I love the radio announcement idea,i'd like to see that implemented in TDK

I heard that the scenes they were filming at the University of Westminster involved the Mayor receiving a call from the Joker.

Don't know if this is an update to the means by how he announces his plot, or whether he calls the Mayor before/after announcing on the Radio, TV, etc...

I'd like that. But which one would be creepier? Before his announcement? Or after?

And this fits in with what Ledger said about the Joker being a "total anarchist." Instead of killing for jewels, he kills people in a position of power in the city.

In that comic, doesn't The Joker disguise himself with flesh-colored makeup to pose as a policeman? One of the casting sides does have a cop saying "he took our uniforms". Do you think we might get a scene with Heath Ledger actually looking...like Heath Ledger? It'd be cool to have some scene where he's disguised himself like a normal person and chat with Harvey Dent or Bruce Wayne. Although I don't know how he'd hide the slashes on his face.

Something in the sides that always interested me was that one of them contains dialogue that sounds like it takes place during a call-in talk radio show. The first time I read the particular side, I immediately thought of the possibility that the Brothers Nolan may have Mr. J pull a Batman #1 and announce his crimes over the airwaves.

With this recent news, it seems like it truly could be a possibility after all.

Is it definitely the Joker in that Brian side? Why does he say "tell them your name"? Are they on TV? Maybe part of the finale involves Batman tracking this vigilante that he met earlier to Joker's fairground lair, where Joker makes a mockery of Batman in front of everyone watching.
