Square Enix's Avengers

It's not just Crystal Dynamics that's mismanaged the IP, Marvel and Disney have just been incompetent when it comes to games for Avengers or other Marvel properties. Unlike with Fox X-men they own these characters outright and the mcu has thrived for over a decade with little to show for it. Just an embarrassment all round.

Marvels recent track record on gaming has been good to great. The mobile games are a hit, mua 3 was pretty well received, the Lego games have some successes, and then there's insomniacs spiderman franchise. I don't think marvel made a mistake in choosing Square enix/crystal dynamics. I just think the approach to this particular property was a big mistake. Especially since they threw into the GaaS pot when the craze was over.

As far as avengers thriving for a decade with little gaming to show for it, these devs take years to make these games, and marvel had to wait for the gaming licenses to revert back because those had been leased out. So it's not like the movies where every character was in house Sega had a contract as well as Activision and those needed to revert, then they had to shop them around.

I think that's super rough to throw them under the bus like that, TBH. The Games as Service model almost always comes with publisher pressure, and that can be the biggest deciding factor in a games success.

The core campaign for Avengers was still pretty good, and if Crystal Dynamics had just been allowed to make a strong, narrative driven Co-op RPG first, they could have banked a lot of good will with fans to then keep supporting it with updates and content.

But blaming CD for the whole thing? Like dude, you can see the same games in the world they can. You can see what works and what doesn't. There were so many business decisions with how they decided to segment out their content (and those character battle pass things that give you nothing in return?). It's like they didn't learn a single lesson from any other looter shooter/live service game on the market.

This was clearly a game with many stakeholders and it feels like it. Game made by committee. For the President to come out and throw all the blame at CD's door step kinda confirms for me where some of the real problems may lie...

I feel bad because The Campaign is really good! its just the Co-op content provided and the whole upgrade system and everything else was poorly structured. Hope we get some Spidey Gameplay soon

Square are a terrible fit as managers of their Western division. Must be painful working under them. I kind of wish they would sell up and focus on the side they obviously prefer and treat so much better.

Its not like Square's management of their core studios have been all that much better, at least when it comes to the big budget blockbuster titles. Even the FF7 Remake, the closest thing to an unargued success they've made in decades, took a disastrously long amount of time in development for an incomplete product.

Okay, decade-and-a-half? That's how far back you have to go to hit Kingdom Hearts 2 and Final Fantasy 12. Since then, their main studio has produced. . . Final Fantasy 13 et al, Final Fantasy 15, and Kingdom Hearts 3. I am perfectly comfortable labeling all three as "dumpster fires" of varying styles.

I more meant how it must be working for the Western side and feeling like a second class citizen getting publicly dumped on and set ridiculous targets which make a success look like a failure. Really strange how the higher ups treat them, almost as if they are an embarrassment. Final Fantasy yeah, very long way off the 7/8 peak for me.

Ms. Marvel being in the game feels kind of odd to me. She comes off in the main campaign as like a Kitty Pryde or Jubilee "audience surrogate" type of kid character, which feels more like an X-Men type of thing than it does the Avengers.

Her role is very similar to Magma in X-Men Legends.

Actually this game reminded me a lot of X-Men Legends, but this isn't as eXciting and well made as that game.

That first X-Men Legends did so many great things, in terms of narrative, that they just never continued with any of the future games. Even though I loved X-Men Legends 2, the gameplay definitely became a bit more generic to include twice the characters.

I always loved that solo Wolverine level where he revisits Weapon X, and then Cyclops shows up halfway through and you can play in co-op. Great dialogue and banter. And the whole approach to world navigation, how each character could approach it differently. E.g. iceman could build bridges, Nightcrawler could teleport through walls, Colossus could just destroy some.

Honestly, you could do worse than taking the best parts of XML 1 and updating them to make a great Avengers game. I know they continued that series with Marvel Ultimate Alliance, but those games always felt way more hollow to me than the X-Men Legends games.

Oh, true. I often wonder why Square-Enix even bought Eidos in the first place, they've never seemed to respect them.
