Star Trek Sequel

Strange that no one has been announced as director yet. I wonder why Abrams would be hesitant to sign on. He restarted this thing... seems like it's his "baby" so to speak and he would want to make sure it doesn't go off in some terrible direction. But who knows.

So is this movie still happening?

Absolutely. The question is all about the release date (They're still swearing they'll make it to next June; I'm thinking more like December '12 personally) and the director (Everyone expects Abrams to return).

When are we ever going to get some news about this? The first one was a huge success, and yet they're not in a hurry to get the sequel out at all. It's not like they just had a dud like Nemesis on their hands and are wondering what to do with the franchise.

I don't care what they say, they will NOT make the June '12 release date.

I'm looking forward to a Trek sequel & would love to see the Gorn as the primary villian/s or even in a supporting role. I'm also not opposed to seeing a new take on Khan. I'm just hoping that they use him sometime after part 2.

Spoke to JJ Abrams about Super 8 this morning 'hopes' to direct Star Trek 2. Still waiting on script.

Translation: barring a miracle, don't bank on this for next June.

Leave Khan and concentrate on a different villain. That's like having a Superman reboot and bringing back General Zod out of all the villains.

Either they should create a brand new villain (who might be the leader of some alien race like Captain Nero was in the first movie) or revamp one of the old villains like the Squire of Gothos, Galt (the master Thrall from "The Gamesters of Triskelion"), Lt Gary Mitchell (from "Where No Man Has Gone Before") or someone else.

Wasn't the first one originally slated for a Christmas release as well?

Yep. Christmas Day 2008 to be exact. The initial teaser one-sheets and the first teaser trailer had that release date flashed all over it.

Big releases can co-exist and be widely successful. Take 2009 where Avatar, Sherlock Holmes and Alvin & the Chipmunks 2 were all blockbusters and were released days within one another's release.

Besides I wouldn't bank on The Hobbit - Part I dropping next Christmas.

They're well into production already. But the Star Trek sequel would make much more if it weren't competing with anything.

Didn't Paramount want this to be a summer franchise? Why release it in the winter again now? Didn't Star Trek basically prove it is viable over the summer?

Star Trek 2 will be a monster hit after how popular the first film was. Regardless of where they slot it.

But...I don't see how they're going to be able to get it churned out by late June '12 at this point considering there's still no final script and Abrams remains uncommitted to direct. Possible? Yes. Look at the X-Men franchise. With the exception of Wolverine, all those flicks were made under the gun.

I really want this sequel. But I also hope Paramount decides to make a new TV series as well. I need more of my Trek fix then a film at at time.

I feel like the only reason the script isn't finished is because Abrams wants to direct. I'm very happy they didn't rush a sequel into theaters, but I am getting impatient ha ha.

This movie better be good. I want it so bad. And I want Abrams to come back and direct the superb cast that was that last film.

I don't think it will be out by June next year.

Pffft. That's like saying "This ocean better be made of liquid." :o

I wonder when they are going to get started on this, you'd think they would have by now with the first one being a hit, although I'm glad they arent rushing it.

I just hope the wait is worth it. But hell, why should I be worried? Lindelof co-wrote this one. So it's at least going to be good.

I would love if Abrams directed the sequel and maybe even the third one(if the second is successful enough to warrant one) and then give the reins to somebody else. Three films directed by Abrams may be asking too much, but it would be neat.
