Well, Abrams wanted to do his pet project first before tackling a ST sequel. I'd rather have Abrams take his time between projects rather than rush into another movie. Besides, I don't think he'll fully commit to ST2 until he sees a completed script.
And I don't hear a lot of people complaining about a four-year gap between Nolan's second Batman movie and the third one. Don't see why people are complaining about Abrams doing the same thing. In addition to that, the writers were off doing Cowboys & Aliens and Promethus respectively. It wasn't like Abrams were just lying around waiting for the perfect story to pop up in their heads.
then where would kirk put it? kirk with a non humanoid is just gross, lol.I think most just want to see some space battles in the next movie, it wouldn't hurt to have some sort of fighting in these films if they want to go more mainstream. Klingons, Romulans, Borg, Cardassians are all over done it seems. Everyone wants Talosians, Kahn, and others to do it because they are the more interesting villains from the original series. Why does anyone want to keep digging these up? Personally I think its time for villains who are not humanoid aliens anymore and have something much more interesting to show the diversity of the universe. Star Trek's conceptual design for aliens are stuck in the 60s!

http://collider.com/jj-abrams-star-trek-2/114706/In what is probably one of the most non-surprising news bits in recent history, J.J. Abrams has officially committed to directing Star Trek 2. Its been widely assumed for some time that Abrams would return to helm the sequel to his 2009 blockbuster. However, several delays eventually led Paramount to replace Star Trek 2 with G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation in its June 29th, 2012 release slot and the director told us back in August that he wouldnt officially sign on until everything was in place.
Apparently, that time has come as Vulture reports that said delays are now a thing of the past now that co-writer Alex Kurtman has completed work on his directorial debut, DreamWorks Welcome to People. Per the report, Abrams and co. are now ready to focus on Trek 2 and are looking to begin shooting the much-anticipated pic this winter. Now that everything is official, Trek fans can finally get back to worrying less about who will direct and more about how theyll be able to cope with Average Joe Off the Street enjoying their beloved franchise.
