Stargate SG-1/Atlantis/Universe

maybe it's a political thing....her dad could be part of the IOA or something...I dunno

Those character descriptions sound uniformly horrible. I mean, we all figured that SGU would be derivative and vapid as soon as they mentioned trying to skew younger, but they actually say that the team leader is meant to be Jack O'Neill from ten years ago right in the casting description? Yeesh.

If that is any indication of what SG:U is about....

Then you'll be watching the death throws of the Stargate Universe.

That is utter **** and it is shocking that the same people that created Stargate SG-1 and Stargate:Atlantis are behind this god forsaken crap.....

I'm beginning to wonder if Stargate is pretty much just ruined on a fundamental level because of how far SG-1 and Atlantis have taken the humans. The things that initially attracted me to SG-1 were the mythology, the humor, and the surprising mundanity of everything other than the Stargate itself. The US Air Force seemed like the US Air Force, limited in all the ways that the present-day US Air Force would be if a sudden leap in technology like the Stargate fell into its lap. Now we've got literally all the technology of the Asgard, our own interstellar ships, vast amounts of information from the Ancients, the resources of Atlantis, and all kinds of other stuff. Any limitations of modern science in Atlantis feel like throwbacks to pander to fans of earlier years lately. Now they're putting this group on an Ancient ship traversing not only planets but galaxies. I'm wondering how that'll play out when it's so very far removed from such a big part of the Stargate universe's original charm.

Could be worse...could be Star Trek

if this is all true, then trek will once again be better than SG

long term planning you say? I think long term planning in the TV business is a bad idea. You gotta deliver right away and get a second season, otherwise your long term planning is for not

Wow. That's a really weak cast. There's only a handful of stories you can tell with that group. I can't believe they hamstringed themselves like that. No non-humans. No crossovers. They've even found a way to infuse the 'rich white girl' into a sci-fi show. I can't believe it really.

I wanted Ronon to beat Rodney about the head and neck and claim Keller....it would be more realistic....hot girl doesn't want smart guy, hot girl wants big muscly guy who will kill things...

Well, the casting sheet doesn't appear to be a fake out. SGA producer Joe Mallozzi comments on the... robust discussion taking place of the character breakdowns at his blog.

I always like it when the showrunners are listening/semi listening like Ron Moore and JJ Abrams

Speaking of SGU, I notice that much of the reaction to the character breakdowns has been negative. While I respect everyone’s right to express their opinions, I’d suggest holding off on making a final decision on the show until you’ve actually seen it. Last week, Brad pitched us the series and its first five episodes and, I have to say, it’s a far cry from the shallow confection many fans are imagining. In fact, in many ways, it’s a much more cerebral and mature addition to the franchise. While firmly entrenched in pre-established Stargate mythology, Stargate Universe definitely strikes out in an exciting new direction. It’s a series that will delight veteran fans, but also appeal to newcomers who may not necessarily know the difference between an Alteran and an Asuran. In spite of what the indicators may suggest, this will definitely not be a Voyager 90210. The assortment of characters that make up the character breakdown are certainly an atypical collection of heroes, far-removed from the skilled likes of Jack O’Neill, Samantha Carter, John Sheppard, and Rodney McKay - but there’s a damn good reason for that. Can’t say more but suffice it to say I have a feeling this show will pleasantly surprise a lot of people.

And sigh, SGA wrapped filming Wednesday (the 17th):(

With regard to the ongoing discussion on the forthcoming Stargate: Universe - At the end of the day, it is, of course, up to you whether you give the show a chance or not but I feel the need to point out that, at present, those characters are simply names on a page and a long way from being fully realized. It’s easy to imagine the worst case scenario. As for the relative value of my opinion - well, that’s also something for you to decide on. However given the fact that I’ve been privy to details beyond the official casting breakdown and public statements made, I am speaking from a informed position. I’ve always followed the maxim “If you can’t say something nice about someone, don’t say anything at all.” so you can be damn sure that if I didn’t think SGU had potential, you wouldn’t be reading my opinions on the subject.

major davis! probably in the finale and I wonder if Amanda took that darkseid statue heh

Another completely pointless filler episode. This is getting ridiculous.

they're all gonna be that way, since the show got the can. But I thought last week was actually pretty good

As for Mallozzi's blog. I always felt that SGA was a step down from SG1, and it feels like SGU will be yet another step down from SGA. SGU will have a higher budget, and an even worse story... just as SGA had a higher budget than SG1 and a worse story.

not in a show marketed to the sci fi watching demographic. The big athletic guy will never win the hottie, not when he's up against a nerd.

I actually enjoyed the episode. The first half was all filler, that's for sure: extended walking scenes through the forest. But the story was actually alright, once stuff started happening.

and how many times have girls done a thing like this: take a 'date' and turn it into a 3rd wheel competition?

Anyone here a member of the special ops site (stargate.mgm.com/specialops)? I’m considering joining but I wanted to know some more opinions on it. A buddy of mine earned enough points on it and traded them in for an SG-1 box set.

SciFi to be renamed to "Beyond"

http://io9.com/5053760/sci-fi-goes-beyond-in-search-of-new-brand

I'll keep this short and to the point:

*over the past several years many of us fans have been complaining of the increasing "slide" on Sci Fi Channel into just plain garbage, i.e. the obvious example of running wrestling on their network, or the ENDLESS parade of saturday night B-movies.

Granted, we weren't expecting THAT much original programming, they do have a shoestring budget, but they could have been rerunning classic shows more often (Trek, X-Files, whatever)

I really liked Sci Fi during the old days of Farscape (and even Lexx...) when you'd see anime or all sorts of hard to find interesting stuff on it. And for a time, it was good: with the first batch of original shows like "Farscape" it really felt like a "Sci Fi Channel" was becomming a reality.

But then, Farscape got cancelled. And they shifted all of their focus to Stargate. Again, for a time, it was good. But then they bled Stargate SG-1 to death and Stargate: Atlantis, hyped as the "Darker Older Brother", turned into a light and fluffy analog of Star Trek Voyager to TNG.

And then of course "Flash Gordon", etc. etc.

And the handlign of Battlestar Galactica; that show really fell into their lap, they had nothing to do with its success. But then they messed with it: season 3 had so many problems because they did to it what they did for Farscape season 4: force them to make a season of standalone episodes and drop their running plotlines for a season; there was a LOT of behind the scenes fighting and now that the series is ending, at convention reports you hear the cast openly criticizing the channel.

But there really isn't much "scifi" on it anymore; they jumped on the near-term success of "Eureka", but after the "its a shiny NEW show!" effect wears off after 2 seasons, the ratings are dropping and critics are turning on it.

And what do we have to look forward to? ****Ron Moore will not be involved in the "Caprica" prequel series; he's only making the backdoor pilot TV movie; then he's moving on to his new show on another channel; and the trailers make it look awful; indeed, I'm not sure anymore if Skiffy will even pick it up.

And of course we've got "Stargate Universe" aka "Stargate 90210" aka "we literally made a Young and Hip Stargate like we ourselves parodied in the 200th episode"

(sigh)

********who here has ever gotten one of those internet surveys where they ask you about what channels you watch?

and they ask "do you like science fiction?" yes. "therefore, do you subscribe to the Sci Fi Channel?" ...

....I found myself saying "not really"

I only watch for BSG and to be honest I could get the DVDs or iTunes and in fact most people do.

Remember their pathetic attempts to advertise their cruddy programming like "Lost Room" during BSG episodes, to the point that it was covering up a fourth of the screen?

Anyway, I realized that good "Science Fiction" is scattered about the networks or on late night anime TV or whatever.

The Scifi Channel doesn't even really seem to like "Scifi"; they just run things about ghosts and bigfoot or whatever.

No, I realize that its not going to be utterly dedicated to the hardcore Trekkie fan, but still, I keep going "who asked for any of this crud?"

and notice that even when they run (horribly edited) Doctor Who episodes stateside, they say at the beginning "a Scifi Channel original series, Doctor Who"....dude its obviously made in Britain.

*******but I digress.

The point is that I am far from alone in the complaint, increasingly the last 2-3 years, that...."the so-called "Sci Fi Channel" isn't really a channel to see much "science fiction" on anymore"

the weird thing is, the execs in charge that keep cancelling shows or running them at bad times or simply poor management decisions that hamstring their own efforts....well, I think its because they themselves simply don't like "Science Fiction". They aren't proud of it or take off and run with it.

The Scifi Channel is run by a bunch of disgruntled execs who wanted to work on USA Network and are embarrassed to work on something so lowly as a "Science Fiction Channel"

dear Lord, "Spike TV" with Blade the Series and Afro Samurai has been doing at least an equal job to the Scifi Channel! (Granted, they cancelled Blade, but the ratings really were too low to cover costs; and they did promote it alot so they did all they could)

It's so paradoxical: the people in charge have always seemed so....embarrassed, about running their own channel....and so....."out of touch". More than anything, I'd say "out of touch" with scifi fans. Never updating or maintaining their website, etc. Never, NEVER accurately gauging what viewers and fans want: lets not forget when infamously, Bonnie Hammer simply didn't understand that people didn't care about Tremors: the Series, but wanted more Farscape.

So apparently an online survey has been going around that they want to change their name to "Beyond"

Which frankly I see as an UTTER VICTORY FOR US FANS:

***it's the final admission that "we're not really a "Science Fiction" Channel and NEVER lived up to the mantle!

It's pretty justified nerd rage, I think. The Sci Fi Channel is, by its very name, implying that it's a nerd channel. But they've been trying to creep over to the mainstream for years now. Sci Fi is a shadow of its former self, with BSG being its only genuinely good show--and, if this guy is correct, it seems that's in spite of the Sci Fi Channel's actions rather than because of them. F*** it, let 'em change their name to Beyond and do what they like. It's pretty clear that they're not interested in science fiction programming anymore, and it's not like I'm actually subscribed to the channel, so what do I care?

That's cool if it is. Now it can be the name of a quasi-sci fi channel over here, too.

up in the great white north we've got Space. And it's good. SG1, Atlantis, battlestar, old and new, farscape(like trek), trek (although more rarely now, they burnt out on the trek I thinks), Buck rodgers, smallville, supernatural, lost... and the list goes on. I've always been happy with the canadian Space channel. They poach all scifi, and put it on one channel which is really nice, given that the genre is loosing a bit of steam IMO. But having it mostly on one channel makes life easier.
