Stephen Hawking claims aliens exist and are likely hostile

I agree with Hawking. The universe is so big there has to be some for of life, weather it's just microscopic oronaisms or other creatures like Lindsay Lohan, maybe even intelligant creatures. Are therer many species like us? Probably not, but be damned sure their is some sort of life on planets. Hell, Europa, one of Jupiters moons. It's covered in ice and many beleivr under miles of ice their is actual water, like oceans, but always underwater (no landmasses, just a planet filled to the ice with water.their could be life in that ocean. Even simple underwater plants or plankton would suffice as one of the greatest discoveries in the history of mankind.

And I for one will welcome our new intergalactic alien overlords

I remember watching the show "Cosmos" and the late Carl Sagan speculated that there could be some form of life in Jupiter's Atmosphere.

I don't think there is intelligent life elsewhere in the Universe, but I do believe that there is life, much like you see in the oceans of our Earth.

I disagree. First, let me clarify that when I say life, I'm talking life...period. Not specifically "intelligent" or "sentient" life. I'd even suggest that not "knowing how intelligent life is formed" would actually work in favor of life existing elsewhere. If we limit the formation of life to just what we know, then you are limited to only a specific criteria (planet of specific size, distance from star, quantity of water, atmosphere content, etc.). However, as a species, we are naturally going to look for life on planets that is as close to our as possible in the hopes that we share similar traits or environmental requirements.

If you believe that life on this planet evolved by a series of chance encounters (or however you want to classify it) and became what we are after millions of years it's logical to assume a similar process could have played out on another planet. We know there are "earth-like" planets out there just within the tiniest percentage of the universe that we are able to view. We know that certain building blocks for life are floating around on asteroids and comets throughout the universe. We know that life can exist in the harshest of environments, enduring extreme heat or extreme cold.
Also, to add to your point, we know this planet did not take that long before it spawned the building blocks of life. After the period of heavy bombardment ended, when life was not feasible at all, it was not long before the supposed first self-replicating molecules formed. Yes, complex life takes time and certain circumstances that may or may not be rare, but the chemical reactions that lead to it's formation are actually very common.

It's interesting to think about making contact with them, and what would happen. A unified Earth against a common enemy is hard to imagine.. haha.
Humanity couldn't even unite against Nazi Germany. I read about Jews selling out other Jews just so they wouldn't be put in an oven or gassed. So humanity unifying against aliens would be a fairy tale at best.

Oh we are not the only planet with intelligent life in this universe, I would imagine any aliens seeing us kill others over the silliest reasons shows this planet is best to be left alone until most of the people grow up

I saw both this show and the time travel episode that followed. And the graphic they showed of an alien armada warping right next to Earth contradicts Hawking's beliefs. He stated that he believed worm holes would evaporate in a few Plank Times no matter how great the energy available to sustain them. So I find it hard to believe, based on that, that aliens will be warping in once they get our phone call. Now if they are already on their way, then by golly we better not make any phone calls.

I wonder if aliens read comic books about humans?!

Hey man i'd prefer a bit of a probing rather than being possessed by some space demon.

Unless like, it was benevolent and gave me super powers! :awesome:

I'm hoping for lifeforce draining naked space vampires that turn people into zombies like in the movie Lifeforce myself :woot:

I hope Aliens exist.

So we can eff them.

I think I could die happy if the end came due to naked space vampires

I have two issues with common theories supporting the existence of extraterrestrials. One, why is there always the assumption that life that evolved on other planets would adhere to the rules and limits of life on Earth (needing oxygen, water, etc.). Two, that a species advanced enough to have interstellar transport would be enlightened and peaceful, especially since here on Earth, struggle and conflict (war) drives development.

These two assumptions always come up, and yet, they're contradictory.

I think it would be very difficult for a civilization to conquest the galaxy. Even over a million years. The transports would have to be sustainable for the colony to survive long journeys, dozens of years if not centuries long. Then it would have to live off the raw materials from the new solar system, which may not even be available, or ample enough to create new interstellar transports. And eventually the mother system will run out of resources hence the reason to jettison out in the first place. Too many obstacles. Then there is the fact that our radio signals have only traveled a few decades or so. Not to mention radio transmissions are already outdated and many communication systems have since been replaced by noiseless fiber optics. If that's how efficient radio is and it gets outdated after a century or two, do the math.

Aliens/Extraterrestrial life does exist. I'm certain of it.

Considering the sheer size of the galaxy & indeed the entier universe, you'd be a fool to assume that Earth is the only planet with some form of life on it.

I'd also pretty much agree with his speculative theory that alien life could be too hostile to try & communicate with should such an opportunity arise. Put it this way, I wouldn't try & communicate with an Alien if it looked like Cameron's Alien, Predator or any other type of Alien we've cooked up in our imagination..

But what would be awesome is if Alien lifeforms did look like those creations but were incredibly friendly and highly intelligent and polite beings. Pip pip cheerio.

Bingo. The only way humanity is going to reach the stars.... is if they find out that blue cat monkey people are sitting on tons of a super expensive element on another planet that can be sold for amounts of money not even thought of yet. Hm... agabaziltratanillion dollars. That's what it's worth for an ounce.

Sadly, your probably right there. Greed has always been a strong motivator
