Hate is allowed, as long as you are informed. Trump taught me that.

Don't forget backhanded compliments, zero actual facts and talking about wanting to plow your own daughter.

"ALL of these Idris Elba movies, they're complete jokes! There's no box office there! He's a loser... but I'm sure he's a nice person! I'd go see this with Ivanka... maybe do some hand stuff, I don't know!"

I like Elba but casting him would completely change the dynamic between Roland and Susannah/Odetta/Detta...so no.
That was the second thing that came to my mind. How does that story and relationship work if they did this.

If Elba gets the role I look forward to all of the vile comments. Sigh.

I wouldn't be opposed to it but I'd really like to see Hugh Jackman as Roland.

The Daily Show had a really good segment on that last night. :funny:

:lmao: Favorite post of the day.

I just don't see how it could work. It would take all the impact of her arc away, and this is a chance for the studio to cast a strong black woman in a major role who could easily steal the show with good material. Changing the race of Roland will diminish that I fear.
Granted that's even if they make it past the first movie.

I'd suggest it. I love the first three books, and enjoyed the rest of the series as well. Reading "The Gunslinger" for the first time blew Young Darth's mind. :funny:
I feel like a total idiot saying this but I haven't read a book in forever.

Don't feel that way. I get to maybe 2 or 3 new books a year these days, and that is because I promised myself a long time ago I wouldn't stop reading. But I am much more a film and tv person. And with the quality of television shows these days, who has the time. :woot:

I used to love reading when I was a itty bitty SPIDEY. I will hunker down and read a book...soon.

Good point, tbh. But I still like the idea of Elba as Roland.

Isn't the "race" aspect more between Eddie and Susannah?

So Susannah.....
Gugu Mbatha Raw or Zoe "Let's give her yet another movie franchise" Saldana?

Raw. Saldana probably doesn't have the time anyway, and another POC getting into something big like this would be great. Raw is superb in the films Belle and Beyond the Lights.

Funny thing about the racists is they won't complain about McConaughey playing Flagg even though Flagg is essentially described (at least in 'The Stand') as someone who could be mistaken as interracial -- more like Wentworth Miller than Matt (not that Matt shouldn't play the part anyway).

Do you spoiler tag every last detail every single time you discuss a film or novel? Of course you don't. It's entirely impractical. Therefore, some will get through and you will get spoiled sometimes. There's no avoiding it, unless you avoid the internet itself.

When it comes to movie or TV adaptations from books I have read, yeah I do spoiler tag everything, especially when it involves the fate of certain characters in books, especially those characters are loved. I have done it with the Strain TV show.

On the casting of Elba I am okay with it, it will be a bit strange at first but the guy is a damn good actor so I wouldn't mind him as Roland.

Late to the party but I'm A-OK with the Elba news.

I'm torn on this. On one hand, I love Elba and he's a great actor. I'm sure he would play the role well, and that's probably the most important thing. On the other hand though, it's actually kind of an important point in the story that Roland looks like a cross between Clint Eastwood and Stephen King. While finding someone who looks EXACTLY like that is hard to do, an actor who looks like neither one doesn't sit right with me. This was the issue I had with some of the other names that have been mentioned over the years (Javier Bardem, Russell Crowe). Jackman was and will always be my first choice because he's got at least the Eastwood look down. I also think David Morrissey has the right look too.

All that aside though, like I said, Elba is a great actor and I'll definitely go see it if he's cast (well, I'd probably go see it regardless).

I'm more concerned that they nail the tone of the books than the Elba news. If he can pull of morally ambiguous to cold-hearted bastard, I'm cool with it. Did Flagg even look like the Man in Black?

Detta can still go off on Roland as a race traitor. So the dynamic is still there for the beach scenes.

Why is this change necessary?

People love the book. Just do it like the book.

Why is that too much to ask?
