Stephen King's Epic "The Dark Tower" - Part 2

The guy that usually gets to see these movies early.

Was not a fan of the aesthetics/cinematography in The Dark Tower. Felt a bit too much like Underworld.

Other than that; Some decent action scenes, good performances. Solid story. Overall I enjoyed it.
This guy has given reactions to films he hasn't seen on multiple occasions, not trustworthy. We can expect reactions Wednesday night.

My local theater will be playing it at 7:19 this Thursday. Thought it was pretty cool they did th whole 19 thing there.

At this point I am not expecting much, but it being a good movie in its own right would be a plus.

Same. I'm hoping a casual moviegoer will enjoy it. Just for the sake of the franchise. A few of my friends think it looks great. One described it at as "Wanted but a fantasy aspect." I didn't want to be that guy and tell him it's not.

So have the one-word reviews from news outlets no one has ever heard of begun showing up in the TV spots yet?

This summer, see the movie that the San Junipero Herald calls "LOUD!"

The Hollywood Repeater calls The Dark Tower "dark" and "towering!"

So don't miss the movie that the Central City Picture News calls "mercifully short!"

I'm shocked.... :)

I know, right? From the single trailer, cheap posters, small budget, release day review embargo, and total lack of any other promotion, I was sure this was shaping up to be a stone cold classic.

:whatever:

...and your avatar and sig always make me think what Jonathan Nolan could have done with The Dark Tower...

King movies are pretty much always disasters. The only question is whether they're entertaining disasters. Doesn't sound like this one is, but we'll see.

Yeah some of my family who haven't read the books want to see it. So hoping it's entertaining.

This just broke on the Variety site:

Clashing visions, too many people with input, a director in over his head, awful test screenings, reshoots to make the damn thing make sense...

Oh my yes. This is all shaping up to be exactly what we've all feared...

But it seems it as awful as we all though, consider me stunned :o.

"Rothman spent hours in the editing bay offering his input" are 10 words you never want to hear about a motion picture you were planning on seeing.

Such a great news. After first trailer can't say I am suprised if and say I didnt see it coming. If everything goes well by January 2018 there will be no more Sony Pictures studio.

Well, poo. It's interesting that the main takeaway from the test screening portion is that it sounds a lot like test audiences got confused, and they made moves to streamline it (dumb it down?), but then the studio is still trying to speak to the complexities in the story after the fact. Which almost makes it sound like it WAS more complex, and now is a lot more straightforward.

I'm kind of fuzzy on how you make the mythology all that confusing, so maybe they were just trying to get too cute and complex with the way it was originally structured or something. One wonders if those test screenings have something to do with the far more straightforward "Good VS Evil" type marketing campaign of late. They're trying to sell it as a simple adventure film, but I have my doubts it started out that way. I'm sure we'll hear more in the coming days.

My favorite book series ever. Turned to crap. Hurts cause I do like the main casting. McConaughey especially is perfect for the role too, if given good material, but he did not.

Let's face it Rothman was a dark blotch against this project from the start. The guy wouldn't know a good property with huge potential if it landed on him.

It's funny because McConaughey turned down being Ego from GOTG2 for this movie.

This is what happens when you try to cram eight books worth of lore into one movie.

They really should have made The Gunslinger.

We don't need to see Algul Siento, The Dixie Pig or bloody Pimli Prentiss for a looooong ****ing time. This movie should have been a simple but effective introduction into The Dark Tower, not a bloody greatest hits.

Tom Rothman is basically movie cancer, so your description of him as a dark blotch is very accurate.

So sad that this is apparently crap.

On the brighter note though, I saw that Jonathan Tucker is going to be appearing in season 2 of Westworld. That's significant (for me at least) since he was my top pick for Eddie Dean back in the Black Donnellys days, which is when I read the Dark Tower books. Since we may never see Eddie in a film or TV series, I guess I'll just have to roll with Westworld instead. Which isn't a bad altenrative.

WOW SONY ****ED THIS UP? I'M SO SHOCKED.

Jk. Not shocked at all.

McConaughey was never good in picking movies and scripts. Majority of his career was him leading and acting in bad movies. Yes, he has made comeback and won Oscar and made couple great movies, but people forget guy before 'McConaissance' happened.

And now he is once again doing and picking bad projects.

I wouldn't have cast him in the role. He just too McConaughey imo.

I am not sad. This was a horrible approach to start with. I'd rather it burn then ruin it more. Reboot in 10 years.
