Steven Spielberg's "Ready Player One" - Part 1

Good news, well deserved for this one. I really think it might end up being my favorite blockbuster for the year. But Deadpool 2 has major potential, plus there are plenty of surprises that we could not see coming, which this one kind of felt like.

Watched the Movie earlier today. Good, but I definitely prefer the book. I wish they would have turned this into a two parter or a trilogy. If the Hobbit can be stretched out into 3 Movies, they should have definitely done it for Ready Player One.

I disagree there. This didn’t need to be a two parter at all, much less a trilogy.

This would have well worn out its welcome as a 3 part trilogy.

That was a terrible idea for The Hobbit and it would have been a terrible idea for Ready Player One. Just because something can be stretched (key word being stretched) into multiple movies doesn't mean it should be.

I agree it wasn't needed for the Hobbit. Still don't understand how they managed to turn that tiny book into 3 Movies. But this Movie felt like a cliff-notes version of the book. So at least turning this into 2 movies would have been welcome.

The Hobbit also was a prequel to a highly successful franchise that New Line wanted to bleed for all they could, while Ready Player One had no prior success.

They fleshed out The Hobbit with a lot of extra or unecessary story.

Seeing it tomorrow, with not big expectations.

Any movie with back to the future and new order/joy division homages or references gets my approval
Everybody in the top billing roles was except for Mendolson Sheridan and Miller.
They filmed it in the UK also. Future Ohio looks a lot like Birmingham (England's second city) :cwink:
If I ever talked to Spielberg, I'd want to know what he knew about Gundam before he made Ready Player One :D

I imagine he probably wasn't that familiar with it because he is a seventy year old dude. If he knew about gundam then it was probably via his kids.

And it's not like Spielberg was alone in a room writing the script. He had help.
About Gundam, he probably knew nothing about it like most of the movie references.
Did he knew about the Big Track toy ? Did he know about The Holy Hand Grenade.

@Chamber-Music : I think there are more references to BTtF than any other movie in RP1. At my second viewing I spotted Doc Brown, the tune heard when Z activated the Zemekis Cube etc.

AFAIC, I found the story mediocre at best but the nostalgia and references made the movie entertaining for me. I've read that in the book it's more 80' references than the movie 90' stuff.

That's because Spielberg has said that out of all the movies he's produced, the Back to the Future trilogy is his favorite.

The film is pretty much a gamer/pop culture inspired version of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory mixed with Tron.

I enjoyed it none the the less

About Tron, I don't think I saw either a LightCycle or Tron himself...odd.

Watched it over the weekend. As someone who grew up in the 80s and a big fan of cinema and comics, I really did enjoy all the pop culture references and the general concept behind it all. Good effects, decent story with good pacing, and decent performances all round. Solid 8/10 from me.

I did enjoy it. I hates how video gameish all looked in the trailer, but after I saw the movie, I understood that was the point. The first race was amazing visual extravaganza that will earn the movie the visual effects oscar nomination. The sound was awesome as well, so I see nominations there too.

The performances were good - not great, but good.

Overall I give it 7.5/10. A good movie.

Finally got to see this, REALLY enjoyed this movie. Wow, what a fun ride. I am so pissed at my self for not making it a point to see this in theater because with the way this was filmed, MAN this must've been a HELL of a movie going experience! I envy you guys, especially the ones who saw this in IMAX 3D. Spielberg directed the S*** out of those action set pieces, I didn't know the guy had it in him to direct CGI action like this. This was just an overall fun time and you can't not smile at some of cool things they do to tickle your inner child.
