Steven Spielberg's "Ready Player One" - Part 1

Hopefully whatever they do with the sequel is better than that synopsis. The first movie was good for what it was: A long, unending reference to pop culture from the 1980's onward but it was not that original outside of it. As fun as it was, it was not a movie I want to see over and over again, unless it is to catch all the easter eggs.

Sequel has to do better than "more of the same, only bigger."
I'm genuienly curious how much bigger they can go. Are there even any pop culture references left? RP1 sure had a lot of them, from alien, TMNT, Star Trek, Kong, Mortal Kombat, Batman... I mean what's left to amaze?

More adventure/mystery/intrigue and less name-dropping and cultural references. It's a wonderful world to explore but it's a hollow experience with all the pop culture things. The film hit a right balance but one wishes for more substancial stuff. It works a lot better when the reference actually adds to the scene, like The Shining.

I wonder how much of this film was actually directed by Spielberg.

....I mean all of it. Compare the CGI action sequences with ones from other blockbusters and then compare them to Spielberg’s filmography. They have Spielberg’s blocking and framing through and through. The spatial awareness and continuity is excellent in the action sequences, which is what Spielberg has always thrived at with action and what is lacking is almost all modern action sequences.

The movie as a whole is fine, but the craftsmanship on display is usual Spielberg.
