Steven Spielberg's "Ready Player One"

This looks like a lot of fun. Although apparently people online really hate the book.

I just saw the very first trailer again and it gave me goosebumps. What a great trailer. One of the best I've seen ever.

I think this whole thing looks horrible. The ugly grey mess of CG and frenetic camera, the geek wankfest meets Hunger Games concept. Just... Blegh.

For those that read the book, and spoiler tag if necessary but are all these pop culture references just these in the novel to be there as backdrop or do they play a thematic role in the story in some way? Basically, the difference between all the Shreck sequels and Iron Giant.

Is hard to answer. The easter egg hunt that is mentioned in the trailer has a lot to do with pop culture references in the book. Sometimes it is like backdrop, like they mention stuff just so you can say "oh I know that!", but there's a reason to it, is probably what I'm trying to say. Most stuff makes sense in the universe of the book.

Hmm... See as cool as seeing all these properties mix I think what would take it to the next level would be to have what these characters all mean to fans play some part in the proceedings. Like I said, in Iron Giant Superman gets referenced and then that gets a big emotional pay off later. I am hoping for something along those lines.

They should have just called this "Nerdfest: The Movie". :funny:

The FX houses must have spent a crapload of time on this one. I can only imagine how long the credits are gonna be considering all the pop culture.

Can't wait though. Been a long while we got a really good family/fun Spielberg film.

And it will remain that way. This looks to be terrible.

Coming from the same person who thinks Hook is a good movie.....

I'm not entirely clear on the overall plot of the movie but the trailer makes it look like the way corporate entities are seeking to control the Oasis may be an allegory for how corporations and the corrupt FCC chairman have done away with net neutrality. I'm not sure if that was intentional or not because the book came out a while back (though not all that long ago) but if parallels can be drawn there then perhaps this is the perfect time for this movie to come out.

Either way... I've watched the trailer several times now and it draws me in more and more. Maybe it's the brilliant use of Van Halen.

It's definitely similar to what's going on regarding control of a technology entity that's supposed to be free for all. And I'm sure you aren't the only one that will bring it up.

Yeah. My only concern about whether such an allegory will work is that online gaming IS controlled by corporations. It's not like the internet (or what the internet was until a couple weeks ago) where regulations kept it free and open enough that internet providers couldn't exercise complete control over it and squeeze people for more money. But maybe they've found a way to explain all that.

Hook is a beautiful, original and kid inspiring movie. To me at least.

I generally LOVE anything made by Spielberg.

But this just looks meh to me. I will watch it of course, and if I like it, I will be the first here to apologize for my comments. But I doubt it.

I try my best to use local or independent ISP's around here, pricing as astronomical as it is.

The look and feel of it. Granted, it could just be the trailers and I have not read the material, but it just feels dated to me in a way.

Blimey, that's a new view on me in terms of the footage shown. The book is excellent and how well it'll translate on screen depends on how much 'counter-culture' moments they want to tick off purely to say 'did you see we put that in' verses actual essence of story.
