This looks like a lot of fun. Although apparently people online really hate the book.

For those that read the book, and spoiler tag if necessary but are all these pop culture references just these in the novel to be there as backdrop or do they play a thematic role in the story in some way? Basically, the difference between all the Shreck sequels and Iron Giant.

Is hard to answer. The easter egg hunt that is mentioned in the trailer has a lot to do with pop culture references in the book. Sometimes it is like backdrop, like they mention stuff just so you can say "oh I know that!", but there's a reason to it, is probably what I'm trying to say. Most stuff makes sense in the universe of the book.
They should have just called this "Nerdfest: The Movie".![]()
The FX houses must have spent a crapload of time on this one. I can only imagine how long the credits are gonna be considering all the pop culture.
Can't wait though. Been a long while we got a really good family/fun Spielberg film.
Coming from the same person who thinks Hook is a good movie.....
It's definitely similar to what's going on regarding control of a technology entity that's supposed to be free for all. And I'm sure you aren't the only one that will bring it up.

This feels like a few years too late.
In what sense do you feel that's the case BN ?
The look and feel of it. Granted, it could just be the trailers and I have not read the material, but it just feels dated to me in a way.
