I didn't mean the critics were complaining about the deviation in tone to its previous counterparts (as you noted, that's to be expected) . . . it appeard to me, that the majority of complaints regarding The Last Stand were in comparison to the quality of the movie.

I expected an epic movie, one that would best X1 and X2 combined. And considering the the storyline(s), it could have easily been the best of the series. Hell, it had the potential to be the best comic film ever made. Period. Moreso, I expected respect to the characters, and I also expected some continuity to the previous films.

Sadly, that didn't happen.

You can still get quality from a different creative team, given they are qualitative. That happened for the "Alien" franchise when James Cameron came on board and it also ended with him. Sadly, the quality of the previous X-Men films was not carried onto X3.

Where are you getting yours??? It was a sleeper hit IMO...If you are at RT then that is biased. The majority of people that post reviews at RT are internet junkies that spend time on boards and know those character's respective history...meh I give up...off to the Spidey boards.:)

X1 opened with $55 million. That's not a sleeper...

Okay, i'll probably get flamed to high heaven for this but I'm going to say it anyway.

It's a frikkin' moooooooovie. You want comic book consitency? Read the damn comics. Hell, even they can't stay true to their own continuity 90% of the time, so I guess I'm missing why all the whining. "It could've been...*whaaaa*" "It should have been...*boo hoo*" "Singer did this...*sob*" "Ratner sucks...*cringe*" "Too much money, not enough film, lost integrity...*blah blah blah."

It's done and it is what it is. Love it, hate it, whatever, but the incesent need to rehash the same tired arguements over and over is getting old. Cyke's dead--deal. Wolverine is a Marvel ****e--deal. Storm will never be satisfactorily portrayed--Deal. No Sentinels. No Phoenix effects. No problem. It's a movie.

The problems I have with the movie are the technical aspects. The dialogue was shoddy (with some cringe-inducing lines IMO) and for the most part, character development was scrapped.

You took the words right out of my mouth. The Ratner has the nerve to say "Fans will be satisfied"...yeah right.

I just think its been a while since people saw the movie. I think once people see the film on DVD and the extra scenes it wont seem as bad to them. I can only just remember the film as its been 2 months now since I saw it and I can only seem to remember the things I wasnt happy with. I think after seeing the 'Making of' and deleted scenes I'll be happy.

I can't wait to hear the commentaries on this one. With Kinberg, Penn, Ratner and the producers commentating.

Ratner didn't write it. He directed it. Not the best style in the world, but he directed what he felt was a good film. Whether he was right is interpretive as to what a person considers good. I watched it. I enjoyed most of it. Downright loathed some of it too. But did I come away satisfied? No, but I didn't in the first two either. Why? Because as a comic fan I have in my mind what I'd like to see and how I would have done it. That's a big problem with this forum. We're all too much on the inside and wanting very particular things.

The general public liked the movie. Loved it? No. But liked it, yes.

Exactly. You don't have to be a veteran comic reader to understand that X3 deviates from the previous two films, with which the audience is fairly familiar by now, and which set the standard and framework.

I don't think the general public engage in discussions about changes of director etc... many people aren't even aware of the 'behind-the-scenes' production factors.

X3 doesn't deviate from the previous two movies. Most of the same cast are there, the mansion set is the same, stories continue (Magneto, Rogue, return of Jean, for instance). The structure of X3 is much like X1 (similar 'cellular biology' intro, two flashbacks then into a 'not too distant future' sequence). There isn't the huge disparity you claim.

The general public will have seen the posters, seen the TV adverts, and talkshow appearances, and thought 'That looks good, and I liked the first two, so I'll go and see that.'

Critics had preconceived issues with the movie because they were aware of the change of directors (perceived as a 'troubled production' by many), the absence of the director who made the first two films and they therefore had those things in mind when viewing the movie. The general public don't have those things in mind. A film is enjoyable or it isn't.

Yes, it had shortcomings. So did X1 and X2. I was angry about Storm's portrayal in X1, and angry about the portrayal of Storm, Phoenix, Deathstrike and Mastermind/Jason in X2. I had issues with things in X3 as well. But the movie is the movie. it's been made, it's a done deal. I prefer to focus on the positive than keep going on about the negative.

The end of X3 clearly pointed in a certain direction, at which Ratner has hinted in an interview! That direction is outer space! In the comics the infant, powerless Magneto was restored to adulthood (and his powers to their maximum) by Shi'ar agent Erik the Red and Xavier's consciousness was put into a newly-cloned body by the Shi'ar.... As Phoenix was part of the outer space storylines, I'm not sure how it would all work, but after three movies I'm not averse to the X-Men going into space! I can hear the Singer defenders shrieking and slashing wrists... but just remember Bryan left behind a franchise in which he grounded the X-Men from flight and space for the SR movie in which there is...guess what.. flight and space!

I know, but he's the on that still said fans would be satisfied.

But I don't see how thats bad. Of course everyone would want a particular something to happen, and when it doesn't, then that person will eventually have something to say about it. I liked X3 VERY much, but I also hated it. Most of the time you would probably think I hate it becvause I always talk about how bad it was. But I still like the movie a lot. It just didn't succeed as I thought it would.[

Over a weekend...that's not very spectacular.

The way people are making it out to be compared to X3...no it is not.

Who's comparing it to X3? X3 had a phenomenal opening weekend. Rarely do movies open as big as X3 did. Few movies also open as big as X1 did, as it's the 43rd highest opener out of 5000+ movies.

Everybody in here is comparing their disatisfactions to X3 with X1 and X2. I will say it again...I loved X1 and X2...period. X3 had a chance to be great but it fell short, but I still liked it and enjoyed it. I am just tired of all the complainers in here...hence the name of the thread title...and have decided to defend it as much as I can.
