Succeed- Meets the box office and fan expectations

Pass- Surpasses expectations and makes more than most expected it to.
Not necessary to be a bajillion dollars.

Fail- Exactly what it sounds like.

Mine are-

Captain America- Succeed
X-Men First Class- Pass
Green Lantern - Pass
Fail- Thor

GL- Suceed
Cap-Pass
Thor-Pass
X-Men: First Class-Fail

Thor might underperform at the box office, but it looks to be a fan's dream come true.

Why do you think Thor will fail?

Don't see the wide appeal. It's not the real Thor of mythology, not that Norse mythology is exactly as sexy and wide appealing as Greek anyways. Hemsworth doesn't impress me, and Branagh, I think is in over his head.

Green Lantern - Succeed
Cap - Succeed
Thor - Pass
X-Men: First Class - Somewhere in the middle between fail and pass.

Thor - Succeed
GL - Pass/Succeed
Cap - Pass
X-Men - Fail

These aren't the only movies dueling. Theres also POTC, Transformers, and Harry potter. Of which i believe only Potter will succeed.

But out of these:

Thor: Fail
GL: Succeed
Cap: Pass
X-men: Pass

2012 speculate:

Ghost Rider: Fail
The Avengers:Succeed
Bat3: Succeed
Spiderman:fail
Superman:pass

So by your descriptions, pass is better than succeed?

Thor - Pass
X-Men - Fail
GL - Pass
Cap - Succeed

Cap - succeed - may be critical success but probably won't be runaway box office winner
Thor - pass - Other than Priest, I don't see much competition for it
Green Lantern - pass - good release, could beat C ars 2 if its good enough.
X-men - fail - Too many characters already, almost none of the actual X-men team are in it, Fox.

POTC comes out soon after Thor. So thatll be huge competition

No. I don't think so.

I just meant it didn't need to blow pass expectations. Iron Man blew pass my expectations. Batman Begins didn't but it was still a success.

Yeah but that's two week away, plenty of time for Thor to make gross a lot, especially if Priest gets bad word of mouth.

The problem is more like, how much hype will Thor get if POTC sucks up most of the anticipation?

But you have described succeed as meeting expectations and pass as exceeding expectations.

Yeah, but Iron Man didn't beat TDK.

It's possible for the PASS to outgross the SUCCEED, but the choices are basically asking, what do you think has the highest expectations, middle, and low.

It won't if the marketing is top notch.

Don't matter when it comes to a franchise. It's more Pirates to lose than Thor's to take. If POTC:OST can't convince people it's back to the good stuff, it'll allow more interest for Thor. Otherwise, I think people will wait and see about Thor in anticipation of Pirates.

I actually think Thor will be the most successful of these films. It is the first big film of the summer to be released which usually helps a lot, it has the best cast and crew out of the four, and it seems to be getting the most hype. I've seen more people talking about Thor than the other three combined.

Captain America & Green Lantern could go either way, but will probably end up doing okay, but not great. I'm a bit more optimistic about Cap because the Avengers tie in could help it. Green Lantern does have the better release date though.

X-Men is a dying film franchise and without Hugh Jackman I really don't have any hopes of it being successful. It would surprise me if it ends up being any good given Fox's history as well.

Of course. It doesn't exactly need to beat Pirates though.

It seems like they're adding new characters everyday. I believe they're still casting some characters even during production

They're casting minor roles. You might as well consider X1 and X2 to have too many characters since they had the kid who changed channels by blinking and the teleporting basketball kid.
