Succeed, Pass, Fail-Summer 2011 superhero edition

Of course. It doesn't exactly need to beat Pirates though.

Right, but I'm theorizing it'll have the standard 50 millionish superhero opening so it'll need strong legs and I think POTC will undercut that if it's good.

With Kung Fu Panda, Hangover, and POTC out by Memorial Day weekend, I wouldn't count on a huge boost. And June isn't kidding around either.

I think it can do 50 million easily if you have the Iron Man 2-like marketing. Until I actually see the actual first trailer they're going to show to people (The SDCC one's too long) and see what they're doing for marketing, I won't make a solid prediction but if I had to say now based on what we know I'll say this film will make at least $60 million opening weekend.

They're casting minor roles. You might as well consider X1 and X2 to have too many characters since they had the kid who changed channels by blinking and the teleporting basketball kid.

Okay maybe I overexaggerated because of what happened in Origins but I still don't have any confidence in the film.

I have no faith in any Fox X-men movie.I know at least they ain't getting my money again.

I think Green Lantern will be huge.

It's Star Wars with a superhero. It will have Ryan Reynolds turning himself into an A-lister.

Director Martin Campbell knows how to do larger than life heroes (Zorro, Bond) and is a much better action director than Joe Johnson or Kennth Brannagh.

Has Kenneth Brannagh ever made a good film besides Henry V?

I tried watching his Frankenstein last night and almost killed myself.

Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing

Thor has much more in common with his Shakespeare works than with Frankenstein.

I think Green Lantern will be the most successful of the four. The one that will make the least will be first class.

Hangover 2 is next year or 2012

next couple summers are looking good.

My predictions.

GL - Success
Reasons: Golden period for Sci Fi, Ryan Reynolds leading, good director, likely visually treat, 3D, not confined to a single universe, GL's probably got the best ingredients of all the films.

Thor - Pass
Reasons: Good release date, strong supporting cast, good director, but directors hands may be tied to the studios plans, the lead actor is a no-name, and fantasy films tend to do better near X-mas, potentially can do well but wouldn't bet the house on it.

Cap America - Fail
Reasons: Whilst cast is fairly strong and the potential for a good film is there the director isn't up to scratch, the killer is the limited appeal overseas and the release date one week after Harry Potter 7 part 2, this one's gonna hurt.

X-Men - Fail
Reasons: Fox, enough said.

I think its damn hard to judge which ones will succeed or fail to be honest, X-Men:Fc has the most name recognition and with Singer and Vaughn on board I am actually looking forward to an X-Men movie for the first time since X2.

Out of the other 3, GL does have the most potential to be a smash simply because of its concept, the concepts for the Thor and CA arent as interesting or relatable as that of GL. Personally I think Captain America is the most likely to fail out of all of them.

The cool thing is that superhero movies have reached a point in which they are already in development before their predecessor have had enough time to fail. Therefore even if all these films fail the next batch of movie will be less likely to. You know it just wouldn't be probable.

Cap is was more relatable than GL. The All-American 1940s GI-Joe versus a space cop? I'm not saying that means it will succeed but the base concept is way more baseline than GL.

I think Cap is by far the most relatable out of all the superheroes but it might not do too well in the foreign markets. I think GL will probably do the best because it has a relatable hero and it's not a hero with the name "America" in it.

Green Lantern-succeed
Thor-succeed
The First Avenger:Captain America-pass
X-Men:First Class-fail

With all do respect Mr. Snyder but this is the 2011 summer movies only. DKR and Supes don't count(so bias!)

When the heck is GR2 even coming out? Not that it matters. That goes on the suckage scale anyways.

Kenneth Branagh is clearly the most celebrated director of the four, and it's not even slightly close.

Don't doubt Martin Campell. Campell's had some great films too. So did Johnston. I'd say there pretty even and each have their advantages.

Vaughn's newer than these guys so I'm not place him with those guys yet.

Thor: Pass - great cast, really good release date

Green Lantern - Succeed

Captain America - Fail, not because it looks like a bad movie, but because that final stupid ass Harry Potter movie comes out a week before. I want Cap to succeed and pass expectations, but idk, hopefully the returns that come in after this weekend say HP didn't do well. Or it drops in its second week like a ton of bricks.

X-Men: First Class: Fail, no Hugh Jackman and Fox Studios is making this.

Casino Royale is the best film among these directors.

I love Casino Royale. But Henry V and Hamlet recieved pretty much universal praise, which is especially impressive given how crap most Shakespeare adaptions are.
