Over on Reddit, Konami has explained the meaning behind the “R” in the game’s title, saying the letter stands for, among other things, “Returns & Reborn.”

Back during last month’s Nintendo Switch event, it was revealed that a new Bomberman title was headed for the upcoming console as a launch title, named Super Bomberman R. Konami has since taken to Reddit to explain the meaning behind the “R” in the game’s title, saying the letter stands for, among other things, “Returns & Reborn.”

Here is the full explanation:

“R is a throw back feel for the Devs. to when games could simply have a letter and allow that letter to carry many meanings. It symbolized Returns & Reborn because this game is such a homage to SNES and SB3. But it also mean Rangers, to represent the diverse and colorful group of Bomberman characters who patrol the galaxy.”

Konami has released the opening cinematic for Super Bomberman R.
The Switch-exclusive Bomberman, announced in January, brings back the iconic series in classic arenas and unique new arenas with new graphics and mechanics.



Its battle mode supports a maximum of eight players, both locally and online, and its 50-stage story mode promises an “enriched story with all-star voice actors.”




Super Bomberman R is due out worldwide for Switch alongside the hardware on March 3.

The footage comes from the first broadcast of “Bomberman TV” from Konami, featuring the Japanese comedy duo America Zarigani’s Tetsuya Yanagihara and Yoshiyuki Hirai.

We get a first look at some character customization options at the 22:42 mark of the video. It follows up with some campaign gameplay with two-player co-op at the 23:24 mark. The familiar objective of “defeat all enemies” is at play again, except we get to see it in a different style from their more traditional competitive play. Footage showing the first boss fight can be seen at the 26:39 mark.

And finally, at the 31:43 mark we get to see the players select a stage and their characters for a good old session of free-for-all Bomberman Versus Mode.

Super Bomberman R launches on March 3, 2017 along with the Nintendo Switch.

Super Bomberman R is a game you’re going to want to play with friends. Especially if you can get up to eight friends in a room together for a few sets.

Super Bomberman R is here, and it gives people a chance to drop some bombs again. In this iteration, it’s possible to team up with one opponent for the campaign or take part in multiplayer battles. While the single player or cooperative endeavor is interesting, this feels like a game where the focus is on playing with other people.

See, with Super Bomberman R, you can play with up to eight people. Being able to get that many people around a Nintendo Switch in the same room to play a game is quite an opportunity. You aren’t earning gems for these local multiplayer battles, which means you aren’t able to purchase more stages, but you can jump into a local match and immediately begin using original Bomberman and his seven siblings on the Pitfall Zone, Old-school, The Great Wall, Magnetic Sphere, Medieval, Slippery Garden, Junkyard, and Labyrinth maps. When setting up a match, you determine how many players will participate, how many sets it takes to win, the amount of time a match will last, if starting positions are fixed or random, if Revenge Carts are active, whether or not there are Pressure Blocks, if Skulls will appear to hamper any Bombers who happen to grab them, and if Special Abilities will appear randomly when blocks are blown up.

Ensuring you have an adequate number of people is critical. With local Super Bomberman R multiplayer, you can have up to eight people playing. Except, if you don’t have the exact four or eight, bots will come into play. The bots in Super Bomberman R can really put a damper on your good time. You can’t alter their AI, so they’re going to get in the way a lot. I found they ended up being more frustrating than anything, as they behaved rather erratically.

Acquiring gems for additional multiplayer content takes take and going through Super Bomberman R’s campaign. You can unlock five additional characters in that mode, from what I’ve seen, and then pay 5,000 gems in the store to make them playable. The same goes for additional standard and special maps. Play, head to the store, then 2,500 to 4,000 each for the bonuses. Since the unlockable characters have some special sorts of bombs, it might behoove you to collect them if you can? While I didn’t see anything special about the Special maps, the 4,000 gem Arabian Palace, Circular Maze, Pixel Land, and Toy Box maps are worth getting.


The online Super Bomberman R experience is a bit different, thanks to ranked play. You can participate in League or Free Battles. League Battles allows you to move up through the ranks after earning battle points, making a name for yourself as a bomber in four player matches. It gives you a chance to earn 150-200 gems per battle, in my experience, and drops you into a match where Revenge Carts, Special Abilities, random start positions, and pressure blocks are on and you only need two Sets to win.

Free Battle is essentially standard multiplayer Super Bomberman R, but online. You can set it up for four to eight players, determine if it is a Friend Room or not, set the number of sets needed to win, put a timer in place, determine start positions, decide if Revenge Carts will be on, offer Pressure Blocks, add Skulls, and decide if Special Abilities should be active. Like the offline battles, you earn no gems for these matches.

The multiplayer in Super Bomberman R has the potential to be the best part of the game. Especially if you can get a full eight people together to play. Just remember to do two things before heading into any multiplayer match of any kind. Visit the Basic Settings menu. You are going to want that Fixed Camera to be on and to perhaps adjust your Network Settings. You don’t want that map zooming in and out as you play. Also, you want to ward off connection issues by looking for people who have good connections.

So this game is getting lukewarm reviews. I hear that it feels less like an actual attempt of reviving Bomberman, and more like a PR stunt by Konami to earn back some good faith from the gaming community.

Super Bomberman R released last week with the launch of the Nintendo Switch, selling approximately 37,000 copies in Japan and earning the place as the best-selling third-party game on the new console.

When compared to previous games in the Bomberman series, R actually performed incredibly well with its opening week being the best in the game’s series in twenty years. Additionally, it was one of the best opening weeks for the Bomberman series in general.

Konami has released the version 1.3 update for Super Bomberman R, adding four new VS stages, two new accessories, frame rate improvements, and more to the Switch action-maze game.


Here is the full list of patch notes, via the official website:

• Four new VS stages have been added to the shop (White Cross, Lagoon, Max Speed, Power Zone).
• Two new series of accessories have been added to the shop (Crowns, Bombs).
• The frame rate of the entire game has been improved. We also made slight adjustments and improved the controls as well.
• Less lags are likelier to happen when every participant in the Online Battle have good network connection.
  (If you want to find opponents with good connection, set Other > Basic Settings > Network Settings to the very left.)
• Made it possible to press L/R to change the inclination of he map in the Story Mode. Other > Basing Settings will also allow you to fix the camera position as well.
• You can now choose the strength of the COM on the Multiplayer Battle Mode.
• The strength of the Five Dastardly Bombers on the Story Mode have been adjusted.
• The difficulties of Beginner and Normal have been reduced, making it easier to beat them.
• Adjusted the heights and slopes on some maps to improve the visibility.
• If you continue a certain number of times in the Story Mode, you will be able to continue without paying anymore gems.
• Changed the BP (Battle Point) increase/decrease rate for the League Battle.
• Fixed other various small bugs.

Konami has released the version 1.4 update for Super Bomberman R, adding new characters, VS stages, and more to the action-maze game.




The full list of changes includes:

• Three new characters are now available in the shop. (Vic Viper Bomber, Simon Belmont Bomber, and Pyramid Head Bomber.)
• Four new VS stages are now available in the shop. (Conveyor Belt Classic, Panic Factory, Plain Floor, and Desert Fort.)
• Two new series of accessories are now available in the shop. (Item and Snowflake series.)
• Other than Battle Royale, the Team Battle is now available as a Battle Rule. In this mode, the team with the last survivor wins the match.
• There are now more ways to win Gems and more Gems available. (Previously Gems could only be earned in the League Battle, but now all VS modes provide Gems.)

Konami has released the version 2.0 update for Super Bomberman R, adding a new “Grand Prix” Battle Mode, 10 new characters, nine new accessories, and more.

• The new Battle Mode “Grand Prix” has been added.
  • The Grand Prix mode offers the following new features from normal battles.
    • Each battle is 2 rounds and the team with the most total points wins.
    • Each character has different power-ups.

The Korean Game Rating Board has rated Super Bomberman R for PlayStation 4.



Super Bomberman R originally launched for Switch in March 2017. A PlayStation 4 version has not been announced.
