US viewers hit by Super Bowl porn
Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald (11) catches a touchdown pass during the first half of the NFL NFC championship football game against the Philadelphia Eagles
Viewers were treated to an unexpected surprise following a touchdown by Larry Fitzgerald
A US television station has apologised after accidentally interrupting live coverage of the Super Bowl with a pornographic film.
In a statement on its website, KVOA-TV, based in Arizona, said it was "dismayed and disappointed" that customers subscribing to the channel through the Comcast cable network were treated to a sudden 10-second burst of a blue movie.
"KVOA will investigate what happened and make sure our viewers get answers," Gary Nielsen, the company's president, said.
"When the NBC feed of the Super Bowl was transmitted from KVOA to local cable providers and through over-the-air antennas, there was no pornographic material."
Both KVOA and Comcast said they were investigating the incident after a series of calls by viewers irate that America's biggest sporting event of the year - featuring the local team, the Arizona Cardinals - was interrupted.
The stretch of blue movie came just after a touchdown by Larry Fitzgerald, of the Cardinals, in the final minutes of the game. The Cardinals lost the match 27-23 to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
