Mario and Zelda ARE bigger franchises going by video games. Nintendo could milk them as much as they do Pokemon if they wanted to. As Corpy said, just make a tv show and put toys on the shelf.

actually more games doesn't mean bigger franchise... just means more games in it , "physically bigger" and thats just due to its age... size wise they both have a huge amount of games

If you honestly think Pokemon is a bigger franchise than Mario and Zelda, Than you're crazy. Mario and Zelda/Link are both hugely popular and icons. It's very rare that Nintendo will use Pikachu to advertise their products, but Mario and Link are always right there.

Yes Pokemon still makes a lot of money, mainly because people like you are still obsessed well past when you should be. I don't see Pokemon lasting forever, but I think Mario and Zelda will be around until Nintendo is through making games.

Pokemon is nowhere near as huge as it once was. When a new game comes out it isn't an event. Mario and Zelda always have huge hype surrounding them and it's always an occasion when they are released.

Money does not make a big franchise, life does and Mario and Link will live on long after Pikachu's cute is lost.

I wish Nintendo would tout Samus as a bigshot also. I mean yea, she's part of the triumvirate of Nintendo mascots, but they treat her more as the third child that you like, just not as much as the others.
