Yes, you read that right. It's time for this year's game of the year thread!

I don't really have much to say other than vote and discuss game of the year shenanigans!

Sadly didnt play as many as i would have liked, buy the Metriod game was really fun,

For me personally this year has been kind of...disappointing isn't the right word, but there haven't been very many games that really excited me. So I've only given two titles any serious consideration as game of the year.

The first is Mass Effect 2.

The sequel to one of my favorite games ever, and a new entry into what is very quickly becoming my favorite science fiction franchise. As anyone who posted in the Mass Effect 2 thread can attest, I was highly skeptical of the changes Bioware was making, and that's putting it rather mildly. But as usual, Bioware knows best, because they took what was broken in the first game, and not only made it work, but made it a lot of fun and quite possibly took a revolutionary new step forward for RPGs in the process.

The other game is Red Dead Redemption.

Better in every way than their seminal Grand Theft Auto series, Rockstar really outdid themselves with this game. The old west is a setting that seems perfect for video games, and many developers have tried and subsequently failed at trying to capture it. Rockstar on the hand stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the ****ing park. With Red Dead Redemption they crafted a powerful story filled with interesting and memorable characters and set it in an incredibly beautiful world.

It's a really tough decision for me since they were both so great, but I have to go with my instinct and say Mass Effect.

It's probably not fair for Red Dead Redemption since Mass Effect 2 is an extension of a game and a universe that I already loved...a lot, and for all intents and purposes Red Dead is largely a brand new IP. But that's just the way the cookie crumbles. C'est la vie.

hands down, all across the board save for graphics was the best game

I'd say Redemption takes it in the visuals as well, no other game came close to rendering that much environment. The game was gorgeous and it was MASSIVE.

So yea, Red Dead Redemption is this years Game of the Year with the next best title a distant 2nd.

Mass Effect 2 - Winner

By far one of the greatest games I have ever played - this one was a no-brainer.

The writing/acting/graphics and gameplay are all top notch there was just nothing else to compare this year. The game's already starting to rack up "official" awards and it deserves every one of them.

Fallout: New Vegas - 2nd Place

I really went into this game somewhat apathetic and came out totally impressed and excited about what was a fantastic entry for the Fallout series. It wasn't Mass Effect good but few things are.

StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty - 3rd place

The story wasn't as good as the original campaign but the gameplay totally lived up to the hype which is an accomplishment all its own.

Halo Reach - Honorable Mention

I've never been a big Halo fan but Reach was for me the best entry in the series and a great exit for Bungie.

Red Dead Redemption. I noticed that alot of people never gave this game a chance because it takes place in the west. They have NO IDEA what they are missing out on. Easily, the best sandbox game of all time, IMO.

The game I enjoyed the most this year was Tales Of Monkey Island.
Not a perfect game, but the characters, story and humor had me hooked. I also enjoyed Bioshock 2. I got bored of Starcraft II and Mass Effect 2, those still need finished.

Props for putting Amnesia: The Dark Descent up. I doubt anyone has really played it sadly.

When talking about graphics, it's probably a good idea to take scale and platform limitation needs taken into account. A more linear tighter game (barring a few exceptions) is generally going to have an advantage in the graphics department.

Starcraft II. Can't wait for the endless expansions. I wanna use my medics in multiplay DAMMIT!

:ST: :ST: :ST:

I went ahead and voted Mass Effect 2. I haven't voted Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood or Red Dead Redemption, but I kind of doubt they'll be as good as ME2 was for me. Bayonetta was a good runner-up, though. I know most aren't a fan of those types of games here, but it's probably one of most pure-out, insane fun I've had with a game in a long time

I voted Castlevania, the game's really surprised me with how good it is.

That said, where's ther option for PEACE WALKER eh Soap!? EH!?

While I think Mass Effect 2 is a fantastic game, I think Red Dead was better.

My 2010's "2009" game of the year however, is Borderlands. I bought and played the **** out of that this year.

Had to go with Red Dead Redemption. Just loved the characters and story.

Given the limited number of options in the poll I chose to exclude sports games, music games, handheld and downloadable games. I know it's not fair to leave out Peace Walker or Dragon Quest IX or Limbo in favor of something like Medal of Honor, which I'm pretty sure no one is going to vote for, but I tried to represent the platforms and games which people on these boards seem to play the most.

I didn't get to chance to play all the game I wanted to play, I really though beforehand that Alan Wake will be my GOTY since I'm a big Remedy fan and been looking forward to the game for 5 years, it wasn't a bad game per se, but it left me unsatisfied. Red Dead Redemption definitely impress me but in the end a game that really satisfies for me enough for almost a year has to be Mass Effect 2 and it's a really brilliant game.

I ended up liking Alan Wake but my expectations had been pretty lowered. The story was great, especially if you're a writer but yeah I pretty much slogged through the gameplay to see what was going to happen next. I liked the atmosphere but they really should have upped the creepy elements and relied less on the flashlight/shoot element. The last DLC was much more a step in the right direction I thought.

I agree and for me it was also could have been the lack of the horror tone or maybe it was me expecting to much. But I haven't get the chance to play "The Writer" though.

Easily red dead redemption or mass effect 2.

Mass Effect 2, one of the greatest gameplay experiences of my life.
