I need to play through Mass Efect 2 again. I kinda wanted to just play it once and be forced to live with my decisions but it reslly was a fun game. Was a bit dissapointed that they stripped some of the rpg elements away, but still a great title

Even though I think it's a better game for it, I kind of agree. It's a shame they decided to take some stuff completely instead of trying to fix it. But at least Mass Effect 3 will have more RPG elements.

Yea I'd agre with that. I think it was a good idea stripping some of the equipment and inventory options back but I think they went a tad too far. Not being able to put on and remove a helmet mid quest? Iv never played an rpg where I couldn't do that.

My vote will probably be for red dead redemption, but I just got assassin's creed brotherhood so I'll save my vote til after I beat the game, it's gonna have to be something reeeeaaaaaaally special to overtake red dead redemption

My vote would have gone to RDR if it hadn't broken on me. :csad:
So, I'm leaning toward either GOWIII, Vanquish, or Castlevania. I still have a bunch on that list to play though.

Heavy Rain is my personal GoTY. Thats my story, Im sticking to it and I dont care what anyone has to say

Mass Effect 2 or RDR?

Do you want me to explode? :csad:

There are only two games that can be seen as the best of the year: Mass Effect 2 and Red Dead Redemption.
My vote goes to the sequel

I went ahead and voted Mass Effect 2. I haven't voted Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood or Red Dead Redemption, but I kind of doubt they'll be as good as ME2 was for me.
You're really missing out if you haven't played Red Dead Redemption. It's unlike any other game.

While I never played Mass Effect 2, saw my friend play a bit of it, I'm hoping Heavy Rain wins Game of The Year. I think its the only game this year that truly deserved it.

No this is not an act of fanboyism. It's because it was probably one of the most cinematic/innovative games I've ever played. For years many have argued that a game can never reach a cinematic level on par with movies. Heavy Rain, in my opinion, disproved that. You can't really classify it as a game. It kind of created a genre of its own.

It was an interactive movie. The control scheme was a bold design choice that was implemented beautifully. Even though players never had full control of each scenario, the designers did a phenomenal job immersing players. The pacing of the game was superb and it definitely managed to do something many games fail to do...it toys with your emotions.

You felt everything in that experience. Regret, hate, fear, adrenaline, annoyance, sadness and on a very small level...this totally sounds creepy, love? Yes that is a strong word to use and definitely out of context. Especially when talking about virtual characters. People sound like freaks when they say stuff like this but hear me out.

It's the best word I can use to describe the emotions players feel when the horrible events that take place in the game occur. It was a story driven game that managed to develop the characters beautifully. From the sons, to the killer, everything was top notch. A few say the voice acting was a disappointment but in my opinion I had no problems with it.

That's why I picked Heavy Rain. :)

Great analysis. IA and it isnt the obvious choice and Im glad you went for it. It was the only game this year I was eagerly anticipating and it notonly impressed me but lived up to my expectations. It isnt for everyone but I appreciate what the developers did by thinking outside the box and being creative and innovative with their approach. I see it being overlooked, which is fine and to be expected but I hope its name pops up a bit when nominees are released. If not the overall GoTY (which I dont expect), I hope it at least stands a strong chance at being considered the PS3's GoTY

I really want to play Heavy Rain, but I've heard the voice acting is under par and that doesn't seem conducive to a great cinematic experience.

The ending (killer's identity) ruined it for me.

The only voices that are subpar are the kids, which have this weird accent that doesnt quite fit in with the other characters. Thankfully though, the children only play a small role and arent heard that much. The main characters sound great. If you really want to play it, I say go for it and let yourself be the judge. Its really a great game

You and me both Havok. In my opinion, the video game industry has hit a creative wall. It's an industry that is beginning to suffer the same fate as the film industry. Everything is simply a "rinse and repeat" development style. We've come to this, I don't know, safe haven. We know what's successful and everyone appears to be trying to capitalize off of that. First Person shooters are a great genre to use as an example. Resistance: Fall of Man was one of the most original First Person Shooters I've ever played.

However, Modern Warfare came out and Insomniac decided to try and take inspiration from that for Resistance 2. Now I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that, I'm just making an observation. It was first Halo everyone looked at when making a first person shooter and now Call of Duty has taken the throne. I think Killzone 3 is another good example. It seems to have a lot of influence from Call of Duty and not sticking to its original roots.

Digression aside, it's clear that developers are afraid to take a stand and try and make something completely unique and innovative. A lot of this has to do with our current economy. You don't want to shell out a ton of money only to get a quarter of the revenue back. When you try something innovative/original you have a higher chance for failure. And thats something we fear.

It's a double edged sword really. You're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. Taking risks suck. But you have to ask yourself, how are we to ever grow as an industry if everyone just wants to stay in this "rinse and repeat" safe haven.

That's one of the things I'm happy Quantic Dream did with Heavy Rain. Hearing the amount of doubt they had behind the project but still kept going is nothing short of inspirational. Also, it's awesome to know that David Finchers film "SE7EN" was a huge inspiration to the games atmosphere.

My brother and I recently watched it for the first time a couple months ago, after I played Heavy Rain, and he made the observation of... "This movie's atmosphere reminds me a lot of Heavy Rain." Very cool piece of trivia. I'm definitely keeping my eye on David Cage. The guy, in my opinion, is a story telling genius.

And thanks for the compliment. :D

@Soapy- People say the voice acting is bad but really I don't hear it. I highly recommend giving it a play. It's one of the few titles that truly deserve it. And if you have a problem with the voice acting, you can always switch the game to french. A lot of people like the French Noir film its able to give off.

If worst comes to worst, and you really don't enjoy it, just switch it to its native language, French. It all sounds fine there.

You're really missing out if you haven't played Red Dead Redemption. It's unlike any other game.

I was going to, but I'm not into open world games. I may still check it out, but I'm not in a big rush

The ending (killer's identity) ruined it for me.

I agree to a certain extent. While it was a great, holy **** moment, I was a little disappointed. Mainly because I really liked Scott Shelby and didn't want him to be the bad guy. From a story stand point though, it made his efforts through out the game all the more sadistic. You feel kind of dirty because really when you think you're helping people you're really just covering your tracks. lol

I was hoping though that the Oragmi Killer would be someone you weren't expecting, and yes Scott Shelby fits that, but I wanted it to be an outside of the main characters. Like in SE7EN when they have a ton of encounters with the killer.

I just found the reason so stupid. "Oh, boohoo, my daddy didn't love me and let my brother die. So I'm going to kill children to find a parent willing to save them." And when he finally does, he pulls a gun on him. WTF?

I felt that halfway through writing the story, they wanted to choose the character you'd least expect, then had to cobble together a reason and came up with that.

Really? You felt that way? I personally thought that was a very intriguing reasoning. To each his own I suppose but I felt that was a very compelling reasoning behind Scott's motives. Especially because it was realistic.

Maybe I'm also playing the story a little close to home? My Dad and his father never had the best relationship. In short, he was a complete *******. My Dad used this as a drive to never be like that and honestly, everyone says this, but I have a great dad. :D

There is definitely a strong relationship between father and son. The fact that this guy is willing to let his child die, that's pretty sad. It's thought that every father would be willing to do almost anything for their child.

I.E. Heavy Rain's tag line of "I did it for love." To be considered a nothing in your fathers eye definitely strikes a very emotional cord. Thankfully I don't know what this feels like and I'm hoping none of you do either. But it does have some psychological implications.

That's what I think David Cage was playing on in the game. And the fact that it takes a realistic approach also made the game that much more enjoyable. At least for.

I do agree though, I don't like how Shelby pulls the gun on Ethan at the end. However, it makes sense. He never thought that a Dad would be willing to go the lengths to save their child. And when Ethan did, it surprised Shelby. I think he was mainly using it as a means to find "closure" for his own situation.

He wouldn't want them living though because of the fact that he would be turned in. So he was going to kill him.

That's just my two cents though.

I didnt mind the identity of the killer. I loved it bc I totally was not expecting that at all. It truly surprised me and who I pegged for it was the wrong choice. It made playing the game a second time feel differently as you got to notice things you might have missed the first time. I thought the motive behind the kidnapping/killings made perfect sense in a twisted sort of way.[blackout]It may seem crazy, irrational and not completely logical, but neither was Shelby. You have to be crazy to go to such lengths and he definitely wasnt as put together as he appeared to be[/blackout]

If anything, my main issue I had with the game was just how little freedom you actually had, which doesnt become apparent until you replay it. There were certain scenarios where I intentionally did something diferent to get a different result, but found that the game forced my character to play a certain way. With that said, I dont think it takes away from my initial impressions and the breathtaking experience I had with my first playthrough

I really want to play Heavy Rain, but I've heard the voice acting is under par and that doesn't seem conducive to a great cinematic experience.

That was my biggest complaint. A lot of the actors native accents come through. Maybe if you did want Tron suggested and switched it to french it might help. Overall Heavy Rain was billed as this great innovative cinematic experience but throughout the game i kept getting reminded that im playing a video game, which would be fine if you weren't trying to sell me this great cinematic experience. The voice acting is at best, sub par, and that KILLS a game that relies so heavily on story.

Heavy Rain's voicing acting is hilarious at times. Ethan's kids especially.

But there are many problems with that game. I was really let down by the many times that the "story changes with every decision" illusion fell apart.

I liked Heavy Rain quite a bit, but for such a totally story-centric game that is part thriller, part detective story, its just too flimsy for me to wholeheartedly recommend without at least a disclaimer that the entire thing sort of falls apart near the end.

I will say that I still thought it was a very fun game and if another one along these lines comes out I'll pick it up happily - I just wish that more time had been devoted to making sure the mystery actually made sense.
