I have to wonder if those bagging on Skyrim have actually tried it out? I definitely don't fit the stereotype. I never had much interest in Role Playing Games. Too much technical **** to deal with as far as I was concerned. The closest game I ever tried in the genre prior to Skyrim was Fable II. I tried the first Fable when it came out, but never finished it. Fable II got more things right in reducing the geeky number calculating and just focused on trying not to remind you it's a video game all the time. Skyrim's world does that.
So reduced screenspace to almost having no UI, randomly generated dragon fights with the dragon attacking local residents as well as you, NPC's with a day/night cycle, the ability to buy your own home and furnish it, consequential law breaking with the ability to pay a fine, go to jail, resist and become an outlaw, bribe or get away with it due to reputation or kill witnesses to reduce or remove the bounty, NPC's commenting on your personal reputation and stats, wildlife that interacts in a realistist manner, bears hunting, elk grazing, rabbits darting about and a whole bunch of other crap specifically desgined to make the game less contribed and more immersive is not as a good as a flexing your muscles and farting?
I don't see how stats remind you it's a game.
They tend to make a game more personal with a motivational target to work towards.
