Sounds like you wanted an origin then that way all the explanations for his motivations would be explicit in the picture. Me? I don't care for origins too much since I'm already familiar with these heroes and I'm well aware of their motivations. I don't need it spelled out for me in the film and I'd rather they got on with showing them do their thing. But I could see how this might be a problem for some people.TheIntellectual said:I also wanted more insight into just WHAT Kal-El was thinking when he did certain things. He didn't act out of character or anything (quite the contrary), but I never felt like I got to know who he was and why he chooses to live his life the way he does.
I know it was subtle in the film but it felt pretty obvious to me. He does what he does because the people of Earth are the closest he has to connection. He doesn't have the people that he descended from so he concentrates on protecting the people he has left.
I did, however, love the subtlety about it. Superman is one of the few characters in the comics who does what he does just because is a good person. He is the personification of good. He doesn't need to explain why he chooses to save all those people. He doesn't have to explain why he pays any mind to all the voices he hears crying for help in the world. He's Superman and that's what he does. The world obviously needs him and he is there. I think that trying to explain it too much or trying to justify it would make Superman too angsty. We know that Batman does it because his parents were murdered in front of him. We know that Spider-man does it because his Uncle Ben died despite all his powers. WIth Superman? No explanation needed. He's just Superman, a force of Good.
