Superman vs. The Elite (DC Universe movie)

This was good, one of the best DC Animated films. I loved the original Action Comics 775 story and thought it was done justice in this adaptation.

The animation, which I wasn't sure about at first, worked perfectly and the voice cast was spot on.

Picked this up today and was pleasantly surprised by this! I didn't dig the look of Superman(that chin!) at first but I thought it worked in the end! I loved how it tested Superman, everyone thinks Superman has no flaws and is perfect...but thats exactly his flaw. His pure goodness, which I love that about Supes.

I expected to like Justice League:Doom more as I picked that up just last week and enjoyed it but I gotta say its hard to pick between them! There isn't a single Dc Animated film I haven't enjoyed so far(I have yet to see both Green Lantern films, Batman: Year One, Public Enemies, All-Star Superman and Gotham Knight :()

Finally got a chance to watch this and really liked it. After I got over the freaky tweaker eyes, I was able to enjoy the story.

I have been hoping DCAU would do What's So Funny because that means they may do ENDING BATTLE, WHICH IS AWESOME!!!! I soooo hope they do.

I normally prefer Daly to Newbern in previous DCAU incarnations, but this story seemed to be made for Newbern's voice. I don't know...he's got more baritone or something and it worked better than I think Daly's would have. The chick from NCIS as Lois Lane was...meh. She at least got a larger role then in some other Superman DCAU movies. That was nice to see and gives me hope they may do ENDING BATTLE. If they decide to do it then I wouldn't mind her voicing Lois.

My only real disappointment about Superman v. Elite is the navigation for the blu-ray special features.... The features themselves are pretty good, but picking one is like playing a bad game of pong ping. There's also two STAS episodes, including Brave New Metropolis, which is my favorite of all time.

I just finished watching this, and enjoyed it very much. I didn't necessarily have low expectations, but I didn't have high ones either. I didn't care for the last DCU solo Superman film, All-Star Superman, but this was really good - not nearly as much in the animation (the style of which I didn't particularly care for) as in the writing. It tackled the idea of, "Is Superman still relevant in the 21st century, in this more violent world?" with real intelligence. I'm a sucker for that kind of self-reflexivity in superhero stories (even if I don't want it all the itme), and this, "Does the world still need Superman?" idea, which was a key aspect of Superman Returns, wasn't developed or emphaszied quite as well as it could have been, so I'm glad to see a movie take it on in a more in-depth, if stylistically different, way.

I watched this for only the 2nd time the other night and I have to say I still love it. Its such a shame some people won't give it a chance just due to the artwork, the designs really do work for this movie. Its by far one of the best yet from the DC Universe and I hope its sales pick up when Man of Steel comes out.

I definitely thought it was one of the best movies they did... shame it was their worst seller.

I'm not giving it a chance because of the artwork, but this is a story about Superman being a bully, beating up the bad guys and telling them "it's either my way or the highway" which just doesn't work for me at all.

Interesting to learn it's also a low seller, thats weird. AH well, 2013 has Geoff John's Brainiac story getting adapted. <3

The whole point of the story is that Superman ISN'T a bully.

I'm assuming you haven't read the story if you think that. Superman isn't saying its my way or the highway at all, end of the day killing is wrong and there's always another way. Superman has to show the world this because no one else can. He only has to beat up the Elite (as you put it) because they get out of control.

Superman isn't saying its my way or the highway at all

But he is, he beats the crap out of the Elite and tells them that his way is the only right one to go, and he will continue to beat the crap out of them and not show any proper inspiration, leadership or team co-operation. You know what character has more faith, trust and inspiration than the Superman from this story? This guy:

The Elite could become a real legion of super heroes, but Superman doesn't care about that or being a symbol of hope and a better future, he prefers to beat up people who disagree with him. The comic is suppose to make fun of comics like the Authority, but it just makes Superman look like a fool.

Actually it's all about how Superman inspires, and touches on points of revelations, that he really isn't making the world better because he hasn't down a surefire solution. That killing..is the inevitable solution, and its now what the people want, when he goes and shows this to the people...they realize in horror what REALLY will happen if that was a solution to the problem.

It's not the point where Superman has lost faith in people, it's more the people have lost faith in Superman.

But the only reason Superman acted like that was because the Elite essentially forced him into a situation where he HAD to kill them. And yet, he used his intelligence and compassion to avoid their desired outcome.

The entire reason he even beat them up that bad was to show how senseless their totalitarian-style of super heroism was.

Are you really that dense that you didn't grasp that when reading the story?

You hit the nail on the head then.

To be honest I think he's just attacking it because of what I said in the Dark Knight Returns thread.

Yes, the world is clearly going to be a more terrible place with likes of Joker gone from this earth.
It's not the point where Superman has lost faith in people, it's more the people have lost faith in Superman.

And this is resolved by Superman beating the crap out of oppurtinist heroes and telling them they can take a hike or follow his view? Why doesn't Superman do what Batman does? Offer a welcome hand, encourage them to become better heroes, why does Superman give up on the Elite? Answer me that.

Don't be ignorant, you can skim thru my posts of this entire thread and see i've had this view on this terrible story. Sheesh.

Honestly, I was kinda hoping you were just being retaliatory.

At least it would've made some ioata of sense. Your current position doesn't at all.

He did do that.

Multiple times.

So Batman never beats the hell out of people? your argument doesn't make sense at all you really need to go back and read it again or even watch the movie.

Superman gives up on the Elite because they cross the line have you seen the amount of people they kill. He can't just help them change and let them go unpunished for their crimes, murder is wrong.

Fair enough apologies for that. You don't like the story thats fair enough your entitled to your opinion.

Thats the point it makes though, that when Violence becomes the solution e.g. "Killing the joker" it opens a whole new way of dealing with problems, which will eventually lead to someone being judge/jury. Where as supes is just there to stop people from doing wrong, there punishment must be done by the laws of the governing country. Whether it be rehabilitation or Prison.

If they continued which the elite do to make those decisions, they bring up the point, so what happens when all the "bad guys" are gone. It leaves those 4 to decide what is good or bad, on a lot more neutral subjects.

Superman does offer them, and it starts off with Manchester Black (the dude with the union jack), looking up too and aspiring to be Superman. However, they show them also watching news clips showing that supermans ways still result in death and destruction for bad guys they've already locked up and have either broken out of prison, or parole etc.

There's a speech near the beginning of the movie, where Superman believes people are inherently good, that sometimes people just make really bad decisions.

I suggest just giving it a shot, seeing supes "snap" at the end, and George Newbern's voice acting, just completely makes the movie for me. It's actually more fearsome I think than anything Conroys done for batman.

WTF....part of the story at the end was him showing them what a bully could do...if he really wanted. He is a bully....in some sense, but he is also teaching bullies a righteous lesson.

Superman became a bully because he was bullied, but he never responded to their threats the way they would have...so he wasn't really a bully like them. He just bullied them until they capitulated.

I feel like I want to say, "How dare you say that!", but I guess I can see why you might see that.

I was going to say, he gave them the benefit of the doubt a zillion times. Then they challenged HIM to a death match, so...not sure where this means Superman is a bully. The point of defeating them all but not killing them in the end was illustrating, "I have all this power, I could kill you, I could shape the world in my image and bend people to my will...but I choose not to, because it would be wrong." He was being merciful, because he thinks people should be merciful.

In any case, I think this was indeed one of the most enjoyable of this line and yes, it is a shame that it didn't sell more. I think I enjoyed it as much as Under the Red Hood. I remember some people saying they thought the animation looked shoddy in the few trailers that came out, but it ended up being quite fluid...

Yeah, originally the animation did look choppy but in motion this is stellar.

Totally agreed I can't believe people did not get that and if they don't think he gives the Elite a chance then they clearly haven't watched the movie.

Yeah I love it one of the best animated films ever really hope its sales can pick up over time. Also the animation style works for this movie it was fine with me.

This definitely was one of the more successful entries in the DC Animated films. Animation felt a little choppy at times though.

I think All-Star Superman edges this one out slightly though.

I am keen to see some non-Superman, non-Batman, non-Justice League animated movies though... Even Flashpoint sounds JL-driven.

I do love All Star it was incredible I just wish they could have done that as two-parter like they are doing with the Dark Knight Returns.
