I could be wrong but I think they were casting for both Grumpy and Chuckles...so Chuckles can't be the Joker.
^There is no validity to this.
Picture the scene as though we have yet to see the Joker, and we're picturing this hooded crook as some common criminal...It seems obvious that he'd be depicted with another nickname in the sides so as to differentiate.
Read my earlier post; the fact that he gets this other thug going ("Who does that guy think he is?"), and then pops him one ("Less guys, larger shares") is an act reserved only for someone so cold & calculated...you may not see him remove the mask until he's actually in the bank, thus initially percieving him to be nothing more than one of the gang (hence the second nickname)...
Just because these names are in the sides, doesn't mean anything. Someone could have auditioned for whatever role, and Nolan & co. could easily have something else lined up for them...I'd much sooner read the actual sides to get an idea of how the script will be instead of thinking that every character who's lines we read is a side beyond a shadow of a doubt, or that each character depicted in the sides as crazy, smiling, etc. is the Joker...does that mean because the one thug uses the line, "It's an inside joke" that he's the joker too? Come on!
