Animation Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

Woah...this just landed on my radar. Apparently the producers of the 1990 movie are actually really keen to go back and do a sequel set in that universe, and have talked to Steve Barron and Brian Henson about it.


Like...shut up and take my freaking money. I've always pined for another TMNT movie that used animantronics. Imagine what they could do with the all the modern advancements....could be freaking incredible.

If this Rogen movie is essentially the Spider-Verse of the franchise, there's no reason a live action franchise can't exist alongside it. Requels are in. Huge opportunity to connect with the OG fans if you ask me.

Let's manifest this into reality!

As much as I would love to see this, it's unfortunately about as likely to happen as Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4.

I was saying in another thread, the 1990 movie is still one of the best CBMs ever made and still holds up. Just a lot of heart was put into that production.

I would definitely love another movie made in that vein.

You're damn right it is. I still think it absolutely schools most modern comic book films. Perfect blend of grit, heart and fun/humor. The fact that Steve Barron is actually on board with this is really cool. Might take some time for the right timing to fall into place, but it would be so exciting if it actually came together with some of the original talent involved.

While the Racism on this is as usual pathetic, im more upset about the whole "she looks ugly" mindset going on.
None of these whiny people are close enough to a 10 to make any statement about beauty.
Even the Female incel grifters involved arent high enough on the food chain for that.

But lets not ignore the Racism on this, because a lot of this "she is ugly" angle is to hide the fact that most have a problem with this April being Black.
They would be angry at a different April design too.

Also, she just like the Turtles are Teenagers in this, wanting a "sexy" Teenage April is all kinds of weird if you ask me.

I mean Megan Fox played April in two movies, and I never especially cared for her performance.

As much as I would love to see this, it's unfortunately about as likely to happen as Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4.

While on the one hand you're probably right, I still think it's a little different in the sense that there is currently an active and mega-successful live action Spider-Man franchise.

I think eventually, Paramount may want to consider another crack at a live action revival of the franchise. At that point, it's like why NOT go back to one of the most beloved versions? Nostalgia, legacy sequels and comic book films are all pretty much the hottest trends in Hollywood for blockbusters. Check, check, check.

It seems crazy and unlikely, but I think we also live in a world where crazier things have happened. This is pretty much my one shot of every truly being excited about a new TMNT movie, so I've gotta keep a little bit of hope alive here lol.

As a black man, I have zero issue with April being race swapped. My beef is, why when you do it though, she has to be overweight as compared to the sizes of her predecessors?

Fun fact: According to Peter Laird, that was what Mirage was developing back in '09, before he sold the franchise.

Unfortunately, Paramount dumped that version and we got Bay's garbage instead.

I swear I feel like the movie is totally relevant today. Substitute the Foot clan for any hate movement that feeds on radicalized incels in search of a father figure and it totally speaks to the times.

The Foot would have a field day recruiting with the power of today's algorithms. Gimme this requel!

Man, if this ever actually came to fruition, I would love this. I didn’t grow up with this film, but from the times I’ve watched it, I remember really liking it a lot. Even though you can tell it didn’t have a super huge budget, there’s this certain charm to it that I found really endearing. You can really tell and feel that it was a labor of love for everyone who worked on it.

As for the whole legacy sequel idea, this would be a good opportunity to do a sort of quasi adaptation of recent The Last Ronin comic. Have a really cynical, aged Michelangelo, who has lost his entire family, be on the run from Shredder’s grandson, or whoever the enemy is. He finds and uses the scepter from the third film, in a last ditch effort, to go back in time and meets his younger self and his now living brothers. They go on a quest to try and figure out a way to prevent his future from happening. Have a bunch of really great bantering back-and-forth between the older Michelangelo and the younger turtles. In the end eventually gets erased from the timeline, or maybe even just dies, but not before everything is set right.

Think “Logan” meets “The Terminator”, if Kyle Reese was also Logan, someone on his last legs and nearly giving up on life, but a turtle trained in martial arts. Bring back whichever cast members you can from the first film for the future stuff. Bring in some fresh talent for the “present day” stuff. Get the best make up, prosthetic and animatronic people working in the business today, take what they established and improve upon it.

Maybe call it something like “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shell of a Time”. I don’t know, it’s just an idea that came off the top of my head.

I saw the 1990 film in theaters. It was definitely lightning in a bottle. It just works on every level. Still one of the greatest comic book films ever made.

As much as I enjoy The Secret of the Ooze because I always have a proper sequel to that 1990 movie would be HUGE IMO if done right, especially after how disappointing that third movie was.

This franchise needs to go back to its roots and the best way to do that is to incorporate less CGI and more animatronic/puppet work while also stepping up the fight choreography as well.

I'd love it if they got the John Wick/The Raid guys in on this baby.

Maybe do full animatronic, with some CGI assistance for the face and to hide the seams on the suits.

I was looking through some gifs of the expressions the turtles make in the original film, and for 1990, those were impressively and surprisingly expressive for the time. Just imagine what they could do nowadays with how much animatronic technology has advanced in 30+ years taking input from facial motion capture technology to get even more expressiveness!

Agreed on the fight choreography. I think that something that could definitely be improved upon, as good as it was back then. Though, they need to maintain the playfulness of the fights and shows just how much fun it is for them. Basically, the groundedness of something like Daredevil with the antics and quipiness of Spider-Man. I mean, to quote a wise sage, “I love being a turtle!”
