Teleprompter vs Bush-isms?

No one is complaining about Obama's using a teleprompter in obvious situations (like the picture above). Obama is criticized for using a teleprompter in bizarre situations - like addressing a rally.

What? Same instance there. Clinton used one at her rallies. McCain used one during his. This is from one of his rallies last year.

I've seen other politicians use teleprompters at rallies...

McCain could barely read.

The teleprompter definitely does not have any love for McCain...that's for sure! (Then again, it would have helped if McCain had the teleprompter at a normal level, instead of five feet above the crowd. :oldrazz:)

Yes they all use them, but at news conferences????? You aren't at a news conference to give a speech. As in, use up 15 minutes in a speech, and only answer 13 questions from reporters that have been chosen in advance. 13 questions that if you had just answered their question, you could have answered 25.

That's not a news conference.

Wait, didn't Bush have a hidden transmitter during the 2004 debates?

I saw Barack Obama give a stump speech in a room of a couple hundred people in August 2007. Shook his hand afterwards and gave him a drawing I did. I remember his speech being punctuated by moments of reflection and ordering his thoughts. No teleprompter was used. He had the room roaring by the end of the event.

But he is also a writer. He writes very well. I read his first book Dreams From My Father. It's a great story. But when he reads his own words off of a teleprompter he adds emotion and delivers his words to maximum effect. When he speaks in conversation he's cerebral and thinks things thru in his head and then, in a measured way, speaks his mind.

.... when he reads his own words off of a teleprompter he adds emotion and delivers his words to maximum effect....

Indeed! The effect of hilarity and embarrassment would not have been maximized if the Irish Prime Minister has thanked BO instead of BO thanking himself.

Stay Classy San Diego!

Obama gives a speech at the beginning of the news conference.

And compared to Bush, Obama is being generous. Bush was practically playing hide and seek when it came to what would be said and not said. Everything was a secret with the guy.

It a stupid criticism that has no merit, we all know that.

Yes, it's so open and inspectable that there is no video available for this gaff I referenced. Perhaps it's posted on the website that has all those bills we can review for 5 days.

You clearly don't realize how closed with no information the Bush people ran things...

Compared to Bush, everything is out in the open.

It's funny that NOW is when we need to know EVERYTHING. Before, it was okay because it was our security on the line....but NOW, we NEED to know.

Different standards for different people, which...is a joke.

You have to admit though, when one of the biggist criticisms of Obama is that he uses a teleprompter, he's in pretty good shape.

Without Bush, I would not know that there are multiple internets. Without this knowledge, I could very well accidentally confuse good internets with bad internets, and that would be a huge mess that frankly I'm glad I don't have to worry about.

Just thank Al Gore that you have all of them :P

Just because Bush was bad at news conferences, doesn't make Obama any more right when wasting time giving a speech, and answering 13 questions when 25 COULD have been asked. Just because Bush never really answered the damn questions, doesn't mean that Obama should give the same soundbite anytime a question is asked about the economy, no matter what the question is......

2 wrongs never make a right, just makes me question why the second wrong didn't learn from the first.....

I cannot wait for the day that an argument with Obama involved can actually be debated without something Bush did wrong coming into play.

I have never in my life saw so many debates involving a President automatically look backwards to the last. I have debated President Bush's wrongs for 8 years without ever looking back to Clinton's wrongs (of which there were many as well) the same for Clinton and the first Bush....

This is a phenomenon I have yet to figure out, or understand.

Everyone knows how stupid, egotistical, gaff ridden, Bush was........its like.....OH DID YA FORGET, well since Obama just had a gaff, let me bring up 3from the last President so Obama doesn't look so bad.....lol

What are you talking? Everybody here makes the 'hypocrisy' argument on every issue.

He is pissed....lmao.

I understand and agree with you on this point, but to be fair, this thread is specifically about Obama's telepromter vs. Bushisms.

You may not look back on Clinton, but I've seen it done plenty of time, especially Sean Hannity. It seemed to me everytime someone critized Bush, Hannity's first reaction was "But what about Clinton...". I was joking with my friend the other day that the Right wing commentators seem to forget the last eight years even existed. Whenever they bring up something that's going wrong with this country, it's either Obama's immediate 3-months-in-office's fault, or something Clinton did over 8 years ago that has festered to this day.

We had a good laugh :yay:

I've seen that look before.....when Biden made the joke about forgetting the oath of office like Robert's. He was pissed, his jaw tightened, sideways glance.......is a strong sign of being pissed. If he is going to continuously use the teleprompter, then he needs to get people involved that know what the hell they are doing.

oooooh don't get me wrong.....I know that people did the same with Clinton......I definitely know that, this board wasn't up, but I've been posting on plenty of Political Message boards where that has happened....I didn't like it then either. Just not a strong debating tactic IMO.

All presidents use teleprompters! Since television became integral to politics, they have used them! In most situation, Bush did it, Clinton did it, Carter did it. Hell, all those fools on the news networks who give him crap for "always using a teleprompter", use them. They want to make Obama look stupid with this attack, which I think is pretty hard. I would prefer my President use a teleprompter, than further continuing the belief that America is full of a bunch of dumb ****s by making countless gaffes, grammatically or otherwise....though it gets harder to argue against that everyday.
