Action-Adventure TENET

Action movies and adventure films.
I loved the film, but the sound was definitely an issue. Too much bass and too much score playing over lines of dialogue. It's not his first film to suffer from it, I'm going to have to make sure captions are on during the rewatch which is not really a setting you should default to in order to enjoy the film's dialogue.

I have not seen the film yet but hearing (fittingly) about the issues with dialogue makes me think it will require closed captioning to understand what is going on. Never a good thing when your movie has such poor sound mixing you literally need to read what is being said to understand what is going on.

Nolan seems to be about the "experience" over the comprehension of his movies.

He was also ok with one of his movies having its main villain who has a lot to say having most of it be unintelligible.

I watched it again and there was only one small part where I didn’t understand the dialogue (Aaron Taylor Johnson with a mask on plus the accent). So maybe it’s just a theater issue? And this was a good quality leak but not even me watching the official blu ray. Then again, Bane was never a problem for me. Yes, the music is too high but i feel like folks are exaggerating..

As for the movie. God daaaamn..

Honestly, id say I understood about 20 percent the first time but now I’m at about 60. I’m getting there! When you see it again and things start clicking: OH BOY. I definitely enjoyed the end more. I understand the time travel quite a bit now. I was so ****ing lost throughout the third act in my first viewing and now i can’t wait to watch it again soon.

I also sat back and realized...

1) this is Nolan’s snarkiest movie since TDKR. Great one liners.

2) you gotta roll with the Bond-esque villain and the Terminator plot. Maybe I was looking for something else the first time (a Fury Road or Dunkirk experience within the sci-fi genre - which it’s not). But it’s also not another Inception or Interstellar. For the reasons why i criticized the writing in Tenet after my first watch...it’s actually now the reason why i DIG the writing. There’s a ton of exposition here and yeah, I tore it down for it not making sense if you remember. Well A) Nolan DOES understand the plot, he’s just ahead of us here and B) the characters giving or receiving information are naturally out of the loop, whereas Inception & Interstellar’s characters often have knowledge of what’s going on yet they’re relaying info for the audience. Debicki has a couple of unnecessary lines, it’s not a perfect screenplay obviously, but it’s stronger than i initially thought.

3) The casting and editing is spot on.

4) JDW’s protagonist is right along the lines of Heath Ledger and Nolan characters like that, where you don’t need backstory shown to us or even told. This time i liked the guy on screen because his actions showed that he was a good/lonely person stuck in a cold career choice. At first I’d question WHY he cared about so & so or why should we care at all if we don’t know his name, where he came from etc. But that’s exactly why I like him now. Unlike Cobb who treats everyone like garbage and we’re just supposed to empathize with him and his journey becauuuuse?? Or Coop who is a warm guy with good intentions who we like but we’re constantly told who he is and why we should be caring like the token Spielberg/Hollywood lead. ‘Protagonist’ isn’t empty, he’s just more open to interpretation and easier for us to place ourselves in his shoes.

One last thing...sorry for the long winded post :) all the highway scenes are MONSTERS

I think my main issue with the sound mix and design is that it hurt my immersion of the film.

Now, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is not my favorite movie or anything, but that movie's sound design and sound mix are all topnotch. When I watched that movie, I truly felt like I was immersed in Hollywood in another time and place. And you could hear everything audibly. All the dialogue had clarity, but the music and sound mix also really put you in 1969 Hollywood.

Two different genres and approaches though. Immersive in a different way.

Always happy to see someone else sharing this sentiment. There's no doubt in my mind that Cobb would sell out every one of his teammates to get what he wants, while there's no doubt in my mind that the Protagonist would do everything he can to complete the objective and keep his team safe. He's the most heroic Nolan lead this side of Batman.

In regards to The Protagonist. I continue to have this recurring question. What do we call him?/"Pro"?/"Protag"? /"Tag"?

That’s exactly right. Cobb doesn’t even deserve to see his children by the end of it, as far as I’m concerned.

@shauner111

Glad you came around on it! I still have only seen it the one time...

Basically the movie fried my brain in the third act when I first saw it, but once I fully got my head around the the mechanics of how time inversion worked...it's actually somewhat straight forward, but it can still twist your head in knots the more the story weaves it through. It's such a cool and original take on time travel.

I'm definitely looking forward to watching this one in 4k soon.

Yeah dude, the confusing parts are when you start seeing multiple Robs and/or two teams moving in different directions.

Yeah the 3rd act both blew my mind with how epic and complex it was but also fried it at the same time. About halfway through I stopped trying to work it out and went along for the ride. But that part is one of the many reasons I am eager to see this again to get my head around it.

I think time will be kind to this movie. And yes, pun intended.

I think that's exactly how the film was intended to be approached. You gotta allow yourself to go on the ride.

For any of my fellow Nolan-heads here, I definitely recommend "The Nolan Variations" by Tom Shone that just came out. It's basically a series of interviews with Nolan, chronicling some of his early life but it goes through his career film by film with a chapter on each (up to Dunkirk). Definitely some very interesting nuggets in there. Was interesting to hear about some of the issues they ran into during the editing of Inception where Nolan was actually panicked that the whole thing was going to be dumpster fire. It's not him going through revealing all the secrets to his films, but it's definitely about as revealing a look behind the curtain as you'll probably get from Nolan. Wouldn't recommend for a casual fan, but if you consider yourself a big fan it's definitely worth a read or listen on audiobook.

This is a one and done for me. No second viewing here...

WB just announced their entire 2021 slate on HBO Max. Wonder if Tenet’s performance had something to do with them nudging that way.

wonder how Nolan’s dreams of saving the movie theatre is panning out.

So I'm watching the bluray version of Tenet and I think they fixed the audio issues.
