Action-Adventure TENET

Purchased Tenet on Amazon Prime. Watched it twice.

This is my 2nd favorite Christopher Nolan movie. I was captivated from start to finish with such a complex concept. Like I allowed myself to “feel it” the first time I watched the movie. On my 2nd viewing, I “understood it” so much better. I pieced together the tea leaves left throughout the story and was thunderstruck at how they all tied into the finish.

John David Washington IS a leading man. I believe he can shine in any genre, and he was phenomenal here. He gave a remarkable physical and charismatic performance. Strong supporting cast too.

Would have loved to have watched this in IMAX or Dolby Cinema, but safety first! I had a blast experiencing it at home.

I like this movie. Not sure how much, but I definitely liked it. But Nolan needs to understand that some ideas are best left on the cutting room floor, especially in a film like this where you have so much going on. The dialogue audio situation makes it a rough watch. I feel like I would have legitimately enjoyed this movie at least twice as much if I could make out what people were saying the entire flick. Because I like the characters, I like the performances, I like the idea, I love his dialogue, and I love how the film looks. But I can't follow it, because I can't hear it and thus I can't understand it, so why do it? The last two scenes would be so much more impactful if I could follow the movie.

A couple of side notes. I was surprised by discount Tom Hardy being Kick Ass and being awesome was a fun surprise. Also I love Kenneth Branagh. I can't believe he used his horrible Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit Russian accent. I died when he started talking. :lmao:

I gotta say, something clicked for me in the fourth viewing. I am liking this more and more. Part of that has to do with actually understanding the dialogue (thanks subs), and skipping the expository parts of the first act (I do the same with Inception) and it's sort of a breeze. It's no Dunkirk but it's shaping up to be a fun movie. Maybe I will buy the physical copy with the expanded Imax scenes (my PS5 disc drive needs a workout).

I finally saw the movie. Not bad. Don’t like it as much as Nolan’s others, but he did put a lot of passion and thought into creating something new, which I admire. I’ve wrapped my head around the plot and sequencing.

After 4 viewings, each being better than the previous one, there is no "maybe I will be it".
The sign is clear :)

had the movie had a better sound mix, I think I would've enjoyed it more as well.

Tenet (2020) :up::down

It has become apparent post-Interstellar with Dunkirk and Tenet that director Christopher Nolan has become a bit too infatuated with the gimmicky story mechanics rather than story itself and characters the audience can really care about. I give the movie a pass, there's some good action sequences and a bizarre one near the end. John David Washington as "The Protagonist" was kind of cool doing his thing but the characters are pretty superficial. Unfortunately his character doesn't have the depth of even someone like Leonardo DiCaprio's character Cobb in Inception or Matthew McConaughey as Cooper in Interstellar, he's more like an old James Bond with the action scenes of a Daniel Craig one. I bought and watched this on 4k blu-ray with the subtitles on too so it's not like I missed something. The film score is great if also overpowering. I don't rate Tenet among Nolan's best works.

My rating system: best :up: good  middling :down bad :down horrible :down:down

I got the Blu-Ray over Christmas and had to watch it twice to fully grasp it. Loved it but I do agree with people about the sound issues. I’m not sure why this has been such an issue for Nolan; people use to say he struggled to film compelling action sequences. That problem has certainly been fixed but the sound mixing issue remains. Oh well.

JDW, Pattinson and Debicki were fantastic. Branagh also played a good “pure evil” type of villain. Had no idea ATJ was in this but I liked him a lot and it made me think how much better he could have been in that awful Godzilla movie if they knew how to write a compelling character.

Johnson is a good actor. He was pretty terrific in Nocturnal Animals. He's just not as lucky as others and probably doesn't get to show his range.

Agreed; he was excellent in NA. Hell I even find his performance in Kick-Ass to be underrated; I know that Hit-Girl and Nic Cage steal the show but he’s perfect in the less flashy lead role.

Anyone feel like Johnson’s part felt like it was made for Tom Hardy? In the same way Tim Roth’s character Oswaldo in the Hateful Eight felt like it was made for Christoph Waltz.

Hardy needs something better to do than Venom sequels.

Yeah, I had high hopes for that Capone movie but everything I’ve heard about it just sounded awful and I haven’t bothered to see it. Guess I shouldn’t have gotten my hopes up from a movie from Mr. FantFourStic.

Capone was all right. It's not awful. It's worth checking out though.

I don't think a movie works if you have to see it six times to finally like it. I admire the audacity of Christopher Nolan but there's nothing interesting inside here for me to untangle, as much as he wants me to. It's way too cold, too robotic, nothing fun.

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't patch things up, that Disney will try to woo him.

Even if he declined their offer, I could totally see Disney liking to have him in their stable.
