Action-Adventure TENET

Action movies and adventure films.
So I'm watching the bluray version of Tenet and I think they fixed the audio issues.

You mean Nolan digitally removed their masks, lowered the soundtrack volume and redubbed the exposition?

Makes me think Jack is the new CEO of Warners...

WB just announced their entire 2021 slate on HBO Max. Wonder if Tenet’s performance had something to do with them nudging that way.

wonder how Nolan’s dreams of saving the movie theatre is panning out.

I’m not buying stock in John David Washington any time soon. He was fine in Blackklansman, but here he’s so bland here. The character is so blank, he’s just the bestest spy ever who will always do the right thing, but someone like his Dad’s pure charisma could power through a character like that.

You crazy son.

Ugh, I was looking forward to this movie but ended up hating it. The script was awful. Just full with exposition and paper-thin characters. Nolan is great when it comes to concepts but when it comes to actually transform those concepts into well-written scripts, he falters.

I completely agree. Pattinson also had a blank character but managed to do something with the part just through sheer acting will.

Oh, no, it would be too painful to watch it again. But how are the characters not paper-thin? What's complex about them? What are their character flaws? What are they actually feeling deep down inside and why are they feeling that way? I have no idea.

I watched this last night. Really dull at times and extremely confusing. Main characters are paper thin, except for the wife (I can't remember even her name, which says a lot). Time travel as a concept is already confusing enough and this one did it in the most confusing way possible. Worst Nolan film I've seen.

I’ll be honest, I’ve been reading your guys’ thoughts and reactions to this for the past two months and I think I’m gonna skip this altogether. It doesnt sound like its for me, between the technical issues, the confusing narrative, tons of exposition, it sounds like Inception on steroids. I was really looking forward to it too, but I’m almost sure this movie's going to give me a literal headache.

Watch it again like I did. Pattinson’s character is not blank.
He’s not blank because Pattinson brings some charisma to the role. Can you tell me anything about the character besides his function in the plot? What is he like when he’s not doing a mission? What are his motivations besides that he’s one of the good guys? He says some funny lines and looks cool, but those aren’t character traits.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention. I had English subtitles on but not sure if I needed them. My biggest issue with the movie was the soundtrack. It is the most annoying thing since TDKR soundtrack which gave me a migraine in the theater. So monotonous and annoying sounds. I almost reached for my headphones setting button which elevates spoken word over other sounds. Definitely not Göransson's best work.

I'm still somewhere between 6-7/10 aka Nolan's worst. Unfortunately he's repeating the same mistakes since TDKR now: weak/dumb script, miscasts and mechanical performances and at times it feels a bit too much like a directing exhibition.

I think Rpatz should have been the lead with someone who has strong screen-presence like Brad Pitt as his partner / mentor. Also I'd replace Branagh and his ridiculous overacting with someone like Hugh Jackman and Debicki... honestly I doubt she's able to have chemistry with another human being but Nolan's still absolutely shocking at writing and casting female roles.

The reason why I say watch it again is because a lot of the negative comments on the last two pages are exactly what I said after my first viewing. Especially the confusing part. When you actually understand what’s happening, you can enjoy this movie more and it becomes less of a headache.

You can show your hand as a character, your motives, what you’re feeling through action. It’s a plotty movie but Nolan does a good job with Neil and the Protagonist so you know what they’re made of JUST by their actions and expressions. JDW has a lot of charisma here and made me laugh quite a few times. He was so slick. If he’s not flawed enough for some of you guys, that’s fair enough, but this wasn’t a character driven piece, it’s an action movie basically about the mission and that experience. It’s like Dunkirk in that sense (which was also criticized for not having good characters). But i’d argue Dunkirk’s characters were dull, especially the lead who had one facial expression the entire run time. JDW was like a young Denzel to me. So many times he delivered a line exactly like his father would and not in a copy cat way, it’s just his nature.

I can’t talk too much about Neil without getting into spoilers about who he really is. Once that clicks, you can see his motivations especially when you watch Tenet again. On second viewing you’ll know why he’s doing everything from his first scene to his last. Yes, it may have been more dull without Rob. But that’s fine. What if’s mean nothing. I’ll go by what’s in front of me, and Neil was charming and memorable. For all the exposition Nolan gives us, he doesn’t give much at all with those two characters and I loved that. I’ll take that over Leo/Cobb constantly telling people WHY he’s after this and what happened to him or his wife and blah blah.

I went from thinking this is one of if not Nolan’s weakest film to watching it again and thinking it’s his best film outside of his Batman movies.

I thought both JDW and Pattinson were great in the movie.

I thought Pattinson ended up being more likeable but I really just didn't know or care about them. That's a failure from the movie's part.

There' also no way I'm watching the movie again, I do not want to hear that music ever again. :barf:

I will always love Inception, but you can tell Tenet was made by a much more confident filmmaker.

And contrary to what some may think, I think Tenet DOES showcase some of the lessons he learned from Dunkirk. In fact, it's probably his most purely cinematic concept yet. Yes, the movie has a lot of dialogue, and yes some of his hard to make out-- but it needs to be experienced visually in order for you to process what's happening. The visual storytelling is on full display.

Yeah the paper thin character complaint is sounding a bit overstated these last few pages. The characters in Inception weren't ocean deep, and thin characters didn't stop a movie like Saving Private Ryan from being a great film. I think we'd be criticizing Tenet more if JDW had a wife he was trying to get back to, lol.

he’s the bestest spy who will ever spy but also is an idiot. It depends on the plot at the moments. That’s the hallmark of a bad character. When you are whatever depending on plot.
