The other links weren't working.

Not sure why, but it says Fast 4 almost led the franchise to extinction, which sounds ****ing ridiculous. That sounds more like the third film than anything.

Yeah the 3rd furious turned me off from the franchise completely. From what I was able to gage, it wasnt until the rock enetered that the franchise really took off. People say bring the rock in but at this point I think he is above a role like the terminator. If you wanna get technical they should have switched up actors being terminators every movie. By bringing arnold back all the time it kind of sets the studio back.

People are forgetting, but Fast & Furious at the time was seen as a huge revival and comeback for the franchise. It shifted the momentum to make Fast 5 happen, but there is no doubting the success of the fourth film.

At this point, I think this version of the franchise and the John Connor story , or at least the story that's worth telling , is over. I think its been exhausted , so in that sense, the source which said it had to be something new or different, or something drastic has to change, is correct.

I think if you're gonna do another film it either has to be a true reboot/remake which wouldn't go over too well, or you tell a new story , with new characters , set in the Terminator mythology, i.e. a group of characters who aren't John Connor, Kyle Reese, Sarah Connor, etc. Of course , the latter option has risks in that the GA says , "Why should I care about new characters".

However from a creative pov , I think thats they way you go as opposed to going back to the John/Kyle/Sarah/T800 route yet again. You get someone like Dwayne Johnson as the new Terminator, hero or villain, you tell a fresh story which doesn't tread on the classic films, and you deal with a new group of compelling and interesting , people, i.e. no Marcus's.

Or you could just try and make a new sci-fi action story instead of trying to ride the coattails of James Cameron.

This is the terminator thread about a studio trying to milk and old property, so you know that's not gonna happen:cwink:

I think they should just start combining this series with the AvP series at this point.

Alien v Predator v Terminator? Might as well throw Robocop in while we're at it. :o

Well, Terminator vs Alien vs Predator actually had a comic run. And honestly, how many times can they fight an apocalyptic robo-war with time travel for a movie?

Simon Phoenix and Cameron Poe needs to be in there somehow.

I think at this point China will be a deciding factor, if it makes $100 million there this will get to $400 million WW, that has been enough to get other movies a sequel and ones that cost more than Genisys did.

Perhaps it's just time to let Terminator go. We're always hoping they're going to recreate past glories (I'm talking about you, T1 & T2) but it doesn't seem that is the case. Genisys wasn't the complete trainwreck I expected, but neither did I walk away from it stunned and on a high like I did after my first watch of T2. It was passable, with a bit of confusion and mediocrity thrown in.

Again, I feel like the mish-mash of casting and timeline events didn't help. It reminds me somewhat of Superman Returns in 2006, where they carried on a storyline from 1980's Superman II, largely ignoring Superman III & IV. They cast new actors in virtually all the roles, but kept Brando's image for the role of Jor-El.

Terminator : Genisys did the same thing. It largely ignores T3 & T4. Instead of going for an all-new approach, they bring back an aged Arnie but cast new actors in the rest of the roles - trying to appeal to new audiences but also trying to hold onto fans of the old properties - whilst using the film's plot hook of time travel to explain this. It didn't work for Superman Returns, and it doesn't really work here either.

If you're going to restart a franchise, either start completely fresh or don't start at all. Arnie is synonymous with the Terminator franchise, but he's not getting any younger and it's time to move on and come up with new ideas, not permutations of existing ones.

I think you are making a lot of sense. I love the Terminator franchise and like all of the films, including Genisys. Sure the first two are great and the first season of Sarah Connor was very good. But there is a drop off a bit with the remaining entries.

I wonder if the idea has been exhausted. Now it's just turning the franchise into big budget action movies, without the deeper themes and definitely without the horror from the first film. That being said I would still continue watching the Terminator films if they keep making them. But I'm a little skeptical about their ability or willingness to really push the story forward in a way that I think advances the franchise and maybe adds something different or new, besides a different kind of Terminator.

Sitting down to watch this now. Why the heck does the opening sequence have the spaceships from one of the Transformers sequels? They run out of money? lol

Because you are watching a PIRATED, CAMERA RIPPED/RECORDED copy. I've seen this in the theatres but somebody shown me this copy.

I think they were meant to be the Skynet airships from the first two.

I can only speak for myself here, but that's what it was like for me. The stuff between Reese and Sarah didn't register the way it should because I was staring at two people who've never played the part before. Furthermore, all the shuffling of the deck with people playing John Connor has pretty much ruined that character over the years.

I think the word "disconnected" is the best way to describe the experience watching this movie. Almost like I was witnessing an "impression" of Terminator.
