BvS That thing called MAGIC!!!

How do you want your magic served, Ma'am/Sir?

  • This stuff better be in school books before next semester.

  • Give me time, I think I can do that with some sodium chloride.

  • Batman watches WW use her lasso on someone, rubs his ample chin, hmmm.....

  • Try all you like, you'll never get it.... It's MAGIC!!!

So I've done my part to derail the Wonder Woman Costume thread with Magic-talk... Perhaps a thread dedicated to our understanding of it, what we think it means, how it should be portrayed or explained would be preferable?

Personally - I don't want magic to be in any way explained as a science we don't understand.

I could liken Magic to a source of utter chaotic power that does not adhere to any of science's laws etc, and never runs out - It's always there, you use it and it's still there...

What does 'run out' is the ability of the user. I like to think that gods like Zeus' bunch are more creatures of magic, and therefore far more powerful and durable to bend this force to their will, but human beings, being creatures of science, are far less adept or able because of that.

We have to force it to obey us, and therefore mentally, physically, emotionally we get buggered by using it, because it's not natural for us - Magic can make 1+1 = 3, but maybe a human being can't push it that far?

Anyway, long wind aside - I don't mind science trying to explain it, but I sure as hell want it to fail every time :D

Note: In all honesty, I'm not even sure how far they will delve into the magical side of things in the film... But if they do dig a bit deeper (or in any possible WW solo), I hope it's a complete bloody mystery.

I'm 100% with you Bren, i don't know why any DC fan would be against you on this. I hate the Thor/MCU explanation of magic as advanced science. Leave it unexplained.

Wonder Woman and Shazam don't work without true magic

You wanna know the secret of magic?

Any **** can do it.

Superman's gonna hate this thread :p

Yes, lets give Wonder Woman's magic especially, a sense of wonder. I think the science thing has been way overused imo. DC can be unique in this criteria by introducing straight up in-explainable magic.

How did I just finish posting the poll, and there's replies already? :wow:
Must be some kind of.............. Magic :D

Especially with Batman, who is always looking for answers and facts. Magic can be something he doesn't know all the details about, but something he has to accept just is.

*WW uses lasso on supervillian*
Flash shakes head: "I still don't know how..."
Batman: "And we never will. Now shut up, I can't hear his answers."

I don't understand the poll options.

Magic doesn't need to be explained, that's why she's called Wonder Woman.

...I have no idea how to properly respond to the poll, either.

I will say, however, that I'd prefer to see the various magic factions all draw from different, seemingly unconnected magic sources. Diana, the Amazons, and the Olympians all use there stuff and follow the rules they learned/forged. Meanwhile, Zatanna, Doctor Fate and Constantine draw from other sources and seem to ignore and bypass Olympian rules while still being restricted by other means. But of the Spectre shows up, no one else should have any clue whether he's on a mortal playing field for today, trading blows with Zeus, or in the range of annexing and voiding any and all magic ala the Ten a plagues of Egypt and the impotence of the Egyptian Gods.

This, of course, does not stop Batman from studying all of them so he can exploit their weaknesses even if he can't quite understand them.

I like that idea of different sources of magic, I think I was 'pandering' to the "I want it explained" crowd by limiting it to one source...
The poll is basically, top to bottom goes from "It's just advanced science" to "It's unexplainable, so don't even try"...

(ah I see the tradition of my humour often being singular and understood by only me continues)

Definitely tired of seeing fantasy turned into soft science fiction. I'm not going to let those dark elves go.

Let magic be magic you know.

Don't need it to be told it's advanced science or something.

This should have been an two choice poll. Either magic or not.

You're more than welcome to vote on the top or bottom options then?

This was discussed to death in another thread until the mod got annoyed and deleted the conversation :)
