That Thing I Drew That One Time...

Originally this Elektra was a pencil sketch drawn way back in 1997 as well as a reproduction of a Marvel Annual Flair '94 Trading Card. A few years ago I found it, then inked and colored it digitally in Photoshop. I plan on doing another version of the character in a different pose.

This variant version is closer to the original reference.

Since I recently got the scanner working I thought I'd post something completely new. This piece was originally sketched with ballpoint pen on lined notebook paper. I redrew it with pencil in a sketchpad and then inked it with a Pigma Micron pen. This piece was loosely inspired by the silent film The Man Who Laughs (1928).

This reproduction of the cover artwork for Marvel Comics Presents #63 was sketched in pencil, inked with technical pen and the background filled in with black Prismacolor marker. Years later I used Photoshop to enhance my original inks and get that flat black look in the background and I would also color it digitally in Photoshop.

This is another very old piece as well as a reproduction. It was sketched with ebony pencil. At the time I could not get the face right and actually messed up the paper so I ended up having to add a mask to save the piece. The reference used was a Marvel Trading Card.

Between Elektra and Psylocke, the latter sketch looks significantly more appealing to me.

Not fan art this was originally a tattoo design sketched with pencil. The client had me incorporate a heart design that I removed when I digitally colored it. Working on this helped me learn a little about painting texture in Photoshop.

Another very old piece and another reproduction. The reference used was a Spawn trading card. Originally sketched with pencil then inked with a technical pen. The red is also pen and the black in the background is Prismacolor marker.

This is another reproduction of a Spawn trading card as well as an older piece. It was actually one of the first I colored in Photoshop before I upgraded to a Wacom pen. The original was sketched in pencil and inked with technical pen. Years later it was digitally colored in Photoshop.

Great job replicating Todd McFarlane's art.

Great job replicating Todd McFarlane's art.

Thanks. The original was actually done by J. Scott Campbell and AL Vey. There's a link to the original artwork under the piece for those interested.

Not fan art but an unused design depicting a defeated and decapitated devil. Originally sketched with pencils and inked with a technical pen. I never really finished inking it but still like aspects of the design.

This is a reproduction of a logo design from the One Fifty One Skateboards company. It was sketched with pencil, inked with technical pen then colored with Prismacolor markers and color pencils. The black background was added later in Photoshop.

This is a quick sketch I drew last week and inked over the weekend and was inspired by the work of Jack Kirby. It was originally sketched in ball point pen then redrawn in pencils and inked with Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pens.

This was originally an idea I doodled in a lined notebook with ballpoint pen. Later I did a quick pencil drawing in a proper sketchbook. I started to ink the original line work and half way through I decided to print out my pencil line art and do a proper sketch version.

Just a work in progress photo of the pen and ink version of the Nosferatu piece I previously posted. I think working on the pencil sketch version first let me get a good idea about how I want this version shaded so it's already made it easier for me moving forward with it in that respect.

I like how this finished Nosferatu pen and ink piece turned out and I think it's interesting to see how two pieces with the same composition can look and feel completely differently. I plan to digitally ink and color another version eventually when I can.

This was originally a quick sketch I drew with pencils then it was inked with a Pigma Micron and Brush pens and colored with Prismacolor markers and color pencil. The pose is a reconstruction of a Mark Bagley drawing although altered. The costume is done in John Romita Sr. style expect the chest symbol which was influenced by the films and the webbing was done similarly to the Todd McFarlane spaghetti webbing.

Wanted to post something fun and Halloween themed for October so here's another work in progress photo of a Vampire Pirate hybrid I'm calling "Vampirate".

Another update of the Vampirate piece this time a scan. I'm considering using crosshatching to shade the pirate hat but I'm not sure yet if a vampire pirate should have an undead parrot on his shoulder or a bat.
