The 2010-2011 NHL Thread: Race for the Playoffs!

It is February, the playoff push has begun! The deadline is near, will my Sens trade Kovalev for a bag of pucks? Will the Kings get off their tanned asses and makes a move? Will the Flames stay hot and make the playoffs? Will the Western Conference playoff race go down to the wire? Will Jackcool ask Taylor Hall to marry him? All these questions and more will be answered in the coming weeks!

Now, onward!

I live in Toronto. So hold on to your hat ...

Cheapest ticket in Toronto is 158$ Canadian (which is roughly equal to the US dollar right now). Not including parking, taxes, nothing.

Seriously, 36$ including parking, they're practically paying you to go to their games.

Then there was $1 beer and hot dog night.... Plus they're putting out a winning team, 3rd in the West right now.

I'd love a team in Winnipeg but clearly there should be another team in Toronto. It would go from losing $25 million a year to having profit of $60-$70 million.

The theory is that having these struggling teams keeps the salary cap where it is, since its tied to league revenues. The whole point of this CBA was to ensure teams could ice competitive teams and be financially secure. There is parity but teams are still losing money while others are making even more.

NHL's Collins on Heritage future, other 4 teams
Saturday, 02.19.2011 / 5:40 PM / 2011 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic - Canadiens v. Flames By Bob Condor - NHL.com Editor-in-Chief

CALGARY – Meeting the media Saturday between 2011 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic practices, NHL Chief Operating Officer John Collins said the other four Canadian teams have all expressed strong interest in being part of the event. Collins said no decision would be made about what's next for the Heritage Classic until League executives have time to evaluate this weekend's game.

One bright spot before the puck is even dropped Sunday afternoon: This game earned more sponsorship dollars than the 2011 NHL Bridgestone Winter Classic, and that game's sponsorship revenues set a record.

"The Canadian fans, advertisers and sponsors have all been saying they wanted an outdoor Canadian game," said Collins. "We wanted to find the right business model for it and feel great about this weekend."

Collins wasn't buying that a second NHL outdoor game dilutes the concept.

"You can actually make the argument there is more demand for it when you see the local impact here in Calgary," said Collins. "What makes this game so special is it's a regular season match-up that counts for two points."

He said NHL Hockey Operations was fully consulted about "how close can the game get to the playoff push" and the conclusion was this was about as far into the regular season as feasible.

"Both teams were completely open to the concept from the first time we talked," said Collins.

So NBC is trying to copy "Football Night in America" by having "Hockey Day in America."

:whatever:

Man the blues clobbered the Ducks 9-3 last night. LETS GO BLUES!

Meh, Bob Cole is the only reason I watch HNIC. I hate how they don't use the "behind the net cam" and I can't stand Don Cherry and Ron MacLean.

Yeah that was a great win for you guys, great for the fans, great for the players and great for the coaches. You'd be surprised how much a win like that effects your moral.

This is my first ever post in the sports forum

I was really impressed with Anderson last night. Fantastic performance. I know it was the Leafs and a crappy team can make a goalie look good, but i'm pretty optimistic about him at the moment.

Grapes is entertaining. I don't really agree with what he says sometimes, but he makes me laugh

Did the people in Washington even know the Caps existed before Ovechkin showed up?

then shut your dirty mouth and quit assuming. before AO there were 100 people max at the games unless a big team came into town. You attacked me because you know i was right.
