The 2010 Midterm Election Thread

Texas' new motto when it comes to politics:

"Texas....We love the Status Quo"

I don't know what the results were in the House races in Houston, Austin, San Antonio or West Texas, but in the Dallas area, Chet Edwards was the only incumbent who lost.

Rick Perry, David Dewhurst and Greg Abbott were re-elected and none of the races were even close. Heck, I didn't even know that Dewhurst and Abbott had opponents. It'll pretty much be the same in 2012, when both Senate seats are up, assuming of course both current Senators decide to run (Cornyn will most likely run for another term).

and people are surprised at that?? since when has Texas shown any signs of being progressive in any way politically?

Exactly how was I supposed to know the question was rhetorical? Did you say it with your eyes? The sound of your voice?

Come on, you very seldom post in this forum (which is fine you don't have to be a regular to post.....BUT), you come in with a question like that? I'm going to have questions thats all.....:yay:
Haha alright, no problem. I tend to avoid the political forums because it tends to flip flop topics based on what's popular in the news - I haven't really posted here since Michael Jackson died and a lot of people forgot about the human rights violations and revolutions that were beginning in Iran and in a couple South American countries. I am always reading up on the politics of many countries around the world - it comes from the way I was raised I guess.

It's all good homie. :)

I'm interested were the Tea Party goes from here.

Maybe we just don't view going democrat as progressive. :o

But to be fair, I was unhappy with both our choices for Governor. I didn't want Rick Perry again, but I sure wasn't going to vote for Bill White.

To greater and great height. The are shaping the Republican Party and quite possible the political landscape for the entire 21st Century.

The Tea Party movement is to the 21st Century what the Progressive movement was the 20th.

with more racism??

3 Iowa Supreme Court Judges got bounced last night

Don't worry, 4-6 years, Republicans will be idiots and the Dems will be back...for 4-6 years :o

true...Spider, I half agree with you but here's the thing, our best and brightest don't go into politics, they go into the private sector because that's where the challenge and big rewards are

this country is being run by a bunch of B and C students

Exactly! And this is why the US government is inefficient. We need to get the elite into government. Otherwise, we're only going to keep getting more of the same. But, only way to do this, is to offer incentives for those elite individuals to be in government. Right now, we don't have that.

I don't think "incentives" would be enough....the gap between public service and the private sector is sooooo big

I'm not even talking just wage wise (though 400k per year for the man running the country is light). You could argue patriotic duty. Do more in schools to get certain excelling students to consider that track. Etc. However, we even deter that argument by having our election process be extremely taxing on our candidates and their families, even if they're squeaky clean. We also essentially tell people from a young age that we're probably going to live mediocre lives because getting to the top is rare (again, defeat people before they even begin playing).

You could do a number of different things to get people into government. We just don't. The people in the system like the system as is.

The elite has no incentive to go into government when you see how government treats them.

nobody falls for that anymore

that has more to do with the press and competing candidates than anything else

that's debatable, there are certain people that will excel and there are some that are destined to become janitors....we can't all be winners, you just have to figure out which one you are

Well Az wasn't surprising at all. Red state is staying Red. I'm disappointed. As a Democrat it was unfortunate seeing my Congresswoman (Ann Kirkpatrick) losing her seat to a Republican, but considering a large amount of District 1 are retirement communities I'm not too surprised. I think voter turn out was 39% in AZ and my guess is 30% were elderly. Thats not an official number, just a guess.

well with Prop 19 going down and the AZ law still up in the air...I see other states trying to adopt similar immigration reform

Maybe one of the things that's needed is to show the younger generation that being in political office if just as cool as being a movie star, in hip-hop, or an athlete.

More movies with the President of the United States saving the world? Maybe get some rappers to do some songs and videos about it? Get some athletes to start wearing clothes with government tags on them?

No...no.

Politics will never be cool, because you ARE basically "the establishment."

The Tea Party is trying to prove that they are not a racist group by supporting Nikki Haley (An Indian) and Marco Rubio (Cuban American). It's their way of saying to the American people "See? We are not a bunch of racists!"

And as for California voting against the legalization of Pot? That will disappoint Snoop Dogg.
