I wouldn't take the Ricky Gervais stuff too seriously. The Hollywood Foreign Press and NBC knew what they were getting into when they hired him. They wanted the attention! Now, if you want real controversy, go look at Chris Rock hosting the Oscars in 2005:

Agreed.
Not really. Last year there was always the slight chance that Avatar might win Best Picture. Or that James Cameron would win Best Director. It was definitely a battle between him and his ex-wife.
Yup.
Awesome.

Hathaway and Franco are going to have to work some serious magic to make the Oscars exciting since we know who is going to win what.
Agreed.
This is exactly the same as last year

The once prestigious Oscars are now simply the last award show of a series of awards shows.
Yup.

Awesome.

I bet they were all sad at their coke filled, overly expensive after parties. Ya'know the ones they throw after they're done congratulating themselves for all the hard work they've done for us on television.

), I didn't find his turn as a host funny. Maybe I just don't align with his type of comedy, but when I think of successful hosts, I envision, charm, charisma, and as you put, gravitas. There is also the ability to joke, and even make fun, but without going over the edge. Jon Stewart was a good example. Gervais, sadly, really brought none of that for me, and it's too bad. I was never the biggest Gervais fan in the first place, but I admit that I have appreciated some of his comedy in the past, and I was kinda looking forward to some fresh stuff from his role as host. The stale performance left me fairly disappointed.
