The Amazing Spider-Man 2 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Blu-Ray/DVD Countdown Thread

You're good, man haha.

I really think so too. I mean we would be waiting until September considering the 5/2 release date, but I am not complaining whatsoever.

It's coming out on 19th August, according to official sources.

Do you have the TASM steel book from Best Buy? Is that why you were trying to cop the TASM2 one for consistent packaging for your collection? Haha I would do same.

Yes, exactly. I prefer to keep things similar if I have the option. So, it's a bummer that they're not doing the steelbook again.

Dude I hear you on the transfer. First, I wanted to say that I can totally tell you're a picture/audio/tech/blu-ray nerd just by the convos we've had and by reading your review on TSSM blu-ray (still gotta get on that.)

Yeah, I'm very finicky when it comes to picture/sound quality. I think it's sometimes a bad thing cause I notice the slightest bits of inaccuracies with transfers to BR from film or DVD. And, yes, you do need to get on that :cwink:

Secondly, I mentioned this in the general discussion thread, but that blu-ray date (8/19) has been around since at least the beginning of the year along with Sony's other home entertainment releases. I've known about it for a long time now actually haha. They said they wanted to try out a different strategy in booming their sales with the home releases this year, as opposed to last year. So the date has nothing to do with the BO result. Thirdly, I wanted to say I'm with you, I want a transfer as good as TASM. But also take into consideration that the movie has technically been out since mid-April due to the early foreign release. Sony usually delivers in technology so I'm not too worried.

Oh. I did not know that bit of info. Thank you. Still though, it's a minor worry of mine and I'm sure they'll end up delivering the goods and produce a great transfer. If it's not up to par, I have no issue waiting for the 4K version.

Lastly, what's your kick ass set up? Lol. Not gonna lie, I have a very simple but cool set up. 60" Samsung plasma mounted to wall (wires concealed), with a Sony htct-660 sound bar (wireless sub). Frickin' rich and explosive. Turn the lights off and put in a blu-ray....whew. Heaven.

lol. My set up is mostly so good thanks to a buddy of mine. He does custom home theater installs as his employment. My equipment consists of a 60" Sammy plasma, calibrated of course, with an Onkyo 7.1 receiver and pioneer speakers, also calibrated. I watched my friend do all the set ups and it's seriously like witchcraft or sorcery. Plasmas are already so good just outta the box but after he got done with everything, the picture is unbelieveable. The sound too. My wife and I will occasionally host 'movie night' at our house with either friends and family and it rocks their socks off. It's great.

I feel ya. I guess it's a tidy thing. I was really looking forward to getting the steel book for this film.

You probably have a keener eye than I do. I do notice that some transfers are better than others. TASM has one of the best transfers in PQ. Real sharp.

I'm a bit out of the loop with this 4K thing. How do you know/why are they releasing 4K stuff this year? Because 4K TVs?

Oh my god. That sounds so good. You must have a house or something because it sounds like you have the ideal space for your setup (surround sound?). Dude how does calibration work? Some guy just has to know the tech and adjusts it? I guessed on my picture settings and audio eq haha.
Totally know what you mean by movie night. I've had a few of those. ;]

Yes, TASM is effectively perfect in image and audio quality. All of the Spidey Blu-rays are top standard. TASM2 should be the same. Man of Steel is another stunner in both audio/image categories.

Oh I have both! I agree. Both give my sound bar a work out haha.

Once you start getting into the details and get an eye for how and when to spot them, it becomes very easy to note those types of 'noise' in the PQ. Stuff like aliasing, articfacts, banding, halos, inconsistent shadow detail, etc. ASM is truly a remarkable BR transfer from start to finish. It's such a well-defined picture, so clear and crisp with absolutely zero noise. It's amazing (no pun) how well the picture remains so steady even with the film being so dark in many places. The shadow detail is excellent. It's got reference quality throughout the entire film unfortunately there aren't many shots that are 'wow-ing.' I truly hope they deliver the same quality with ASM2.

I'm a bit out of the loop with this 4K thing. How do you know/why are they releasing 4K stuff this year? Because 4K TVs?

4K is a much higher resolution than the HD of 1080p and is commonly referred to a Ultra High Definition. UHD is a resolution of 3840 pixels × 2160 lines. So, essentially UHD has twice the horizontal and vertical resolution of the 1080p HDTV format, with four times as many pixels. Probably in the next 5-8 years you're gonna see these TVs start to take off. Problem is right now, there's not a whole lot of available content and TV still broadcasts in 1080.

However, many companies are starting to release 4K mastered copies of their movies utilizing that higher bit rate and giving even more power to the PQ. Now, if you are using a 1080p TV you're not going to reap the benefits of the full amount of that master however you will still see an overall improvement in the picture. For example, Sony just recently released a 4K mastered version of SM3. I think they have one for SM1 and 2. Not sure though. And they also released a 4K master of ASM a couple of months after it came out on regular BR.

So, yeah, you're going to see a lot more 4K releases coming up this year and to follow. If there's some sub-par work, although probably unlikely, with ASM2's BR transfer, the 4K release should correct that and be a higher quality. Since that's something that I'm really into, it's a no brainer.

Yeah I have a house and the 7.1 is full surround sound. I really wish I could explain the calibration in detail but I'm very unsure of the actual process. You can pay someone, like Best Buy for example, and they'll come out and do a full calibration of your TV and sound. They have these specific codes that allow them to access locked portions of your TV and some audio receivers so they can fine tune the numbers. It gets really technical. I think it's somewhere around $300-500 US. I was fortunate enough to have a really good friend that does this kind of thing for a living...he's a partner in owning a custom home install company. He's also very meticulous and spent a good deal of time in making sure everything was set optimally. He set up my entire system for free. Minus the cost of a few beers and then my wife and I took him and his wife out for a nice dinner.

I really like that picture. :woot:

58 days I'm not ready.
It was a Gwen one just for you. Stay tuned...more Gwen ones in the future.

Whoa all this terminology haha. Definitely hope TASM2 is the exact type of transfer as TASM. I remember slipping that blu-ray in and it's everything you stated. It should be the blu-ray "flagship" haha. I think it really stays true to what blu-ray is meant to be, and known to be. Super frickin' clear.

Interesting stuff. I know what 4K is, the TVs are spread throughout the lobby here at the "Sony Pictures Plaza" to showcase the ultra crisp definition. I just didn't know that they were already releasing them with movies right now. Had no idea. This isn't something they're releasing through a tangible disc, are they? With the way you're talking, it sounds like this is going to "replace" blu-rays like blu-rays replaced DVDs. Well, we have a bit of time of course.

Haha! Must've been some good beers. Man I'm not sure if I can dish out $300-$500 just on calibration. My setup is definitely not as full as yours, but I'm really happy with it. Our apt has a very simplistic theme to it, so a sound bar and mounted plasma does the trick.

The opening title card logo music alone is enough to shatter windows. That's Zimmer for you. :woot:
You mean for TASM2? Or MOS? Because MOS starts off really quiet and hum like. TASM2 however, LOVE the opening credits score. It's like got the same feel as TASM's in terms of mood and pacing, but new and improved.

For MoS. It's technically a quiet start as you say, but when the sound is turned up it's booming. :funny:

Sony's 4K blu ray releases aren't actually 4K. They are 1080 mastered from a 4K source.
I don't know if any 'true' 4K blu rays have been released yet.

The 4K mastered Blu-rays are essentially upscaling the 1080p to the higher bit rate. It's not a 'pure' 4K. You're not going to see the full improvement on the upscale unless you are using a 4K UHDTV however if you have a 1080p HDTV, there will still be a notable improvement in the quality. It's an upgrade simply by default. It reminds me of those Super-DVDs that came out around 10 years ago. Remember those? But you're going to see more and more mastered 4K movies being released this year and in years to follow we'll start getting those 'pure' 4K releases. IMO, somewhere around 5-8 years from now 4K is going to start taking over the market.

Yeah it's on the low end side for sure. I have a subwoofer too so all that will cut through. But enough MOS talk! Don't want a mod coming in here...haha.
