I don't think they will, but if Sony pushed TASM3 a year to 2017 to really perfect the script, story, etc, that would still meet the requirements to keep the property from reverting to Marvel, right? They only need to make a movie every 5 years or so?

Even if TASM3 turns out great I'll still be disappointed in there only being on worthwhile movie in this trilogy. Or better yet, "Eh"-logy.

Well, that's where I differ with many of you guys. I'm a big fan of the first TASM film, it's this sequel I'm slightly less sure of. But personally I believe the elements (Webb's sensitivity as a director, great acting performance, great action and visuals) are there, but writing, editing and possibly too much interference or hands in the broth may be the problem. I want to see Webb's vision of all these films. Something tells me what we've seen so far is a chopped up version of that.

On a quick turn around of 2 years? I don't see it. I know SM2 was made in a 2 year time frame, but going from SM1 to SM2, we didn't see this many script holes and such. This series needs an awful lot of repair in just 2 years. I don't see a great script coming from this.

Especially if it's with the same writers and Sony demands more "epicness". I'll be surprised at this point if it just focuses on one villian.
Seems like Sony just thinks throwing random people in the Spider-verse on the big screen in random places/positions, it'll bring cheers and applause (which for some people seems to be working).

This movie (TASM3) will pretty much need to reinvent the wheel of what a Spider-Man movie is and what it can do.

Maybe I'm just a sheltered geek...but I have no clue what this Neighbors movie is that you guys keep talking about.

Spidey is lucky that no one wanted to compete with it though. Had another franchise type movie stepped up to the plate, I think Spidey could have lost the weekend. Godzilla giving them 2 weekends of space is a life-saver for this movie.

So it officially opened with an estimated 92mil. I'm sure some were closer but my 89mil prediction wasn't far too far off.
The official numbers come out tomorrow. $92 million is still an estimate.

This is precisely what they should do. Stop the nonsense and cancel the Sinister Six and Venom movies and push TASM 3 back to 2017 or even 2018 (if that's an option). Even more than better films this franchise needs to rest for a bit.

There needs to be a "need of Spider-Man". People take him for granted it's like "even if I don't catch this movie, no biggie there's another one coming in 2 years". And the best option right now is to wait.

On another topic, one thing that kinda bugged me for awhile is if Sony wants their shared, expanded universe so bad, why they didn't try to explore a concept like Shattered Dimensions with solo movies featuring Spider-Men from different dimensons (Noir, 2099 and Ultimate) and then a big crossover instead of this vilains turned heroes nonsense ?

Seth Rogan comedy that's been getting some really solid reviews (which further cements Rogan as being one of the most consistent comedy actors in Hollywood). It's supposed to be really, really dirty.

I guess because they are too worried about audiences not accepting Spider-Man who isn't Peter Parker?

I still have no idea how they pull this Sinister Six business off.

Yes, personally I think if it can hit the same WW number as TASM1 that would be acceptable, but a domestic *** below TASM1 would be very disappointing and TASM3 in 2016 has quite a challenge ahead of it. They've GOT to right the ship and get the writing and editing and focused storytelling in order.

I think it comes down to franchise fatigue from the little re-invention the franchise has had. The marketing tried it's best to difference itself with the enemies unite campaign but it's in a current market where being a superhero film first will only get you disappointing to decent numbers; not mega-numbers, as they go to films like CATWS, MOS, IM3 etc. Films that don't market themselves as superhero films 1st, but other genres -- Cap was political actioner, MOS was sci-fi dramatic epic, IM3 a thriller.

As for ASM 3, after this film, the franchise has lost a lot of good will from general audiences I think. From SM3 being disliked, to ASM's reaction being just "good, not great" and this film getting the same cinemascore as SM3. Sony should be worried about what will probably be their biggest ever film not even reaching $200M domestic.

100% agreed. The only problem is, how long before we get our TDK equivalent for Spidey? Heck, when do we get our BB equivalent! I don't think TASM3 is going to deliver that for us. I only see this current series staying around where it is currently at or getting worse.

I still say Batman Returns gets way too much hate, LOL! But, that is off-topic :oldrazz:

We already did:oldrazz:

God, a Spider-Man noir movie would be so cool. I pray that one day we will be blessed with such a gift.

Would be pretty cool to tie Spidey into the MCU as sort of one of the first "superheroes", that is if the rights ever revert back to Marvel.

If people can accept different actors as Peter, I don't think they'd be too turned off by having it be a different character. Throw a trailer for a Spider-Man 2099 or Spider-Man noir and people would probably lose their ****.

LOL!!! True :oldrazz:

I was more meaning the movie great film that will bring Spidey back the way TDK did. Not so much just a high quality Spidey film.

It would be nice if they moved Drew Goddard off of Sinister Six and on to TASM 3.

Haha, true.

And so long as Sony is at the helm of these, the Spidey films are going to continue to be terrible. As you put it, considering that they'd had 7 years to learn from the mistakes of Spider-Man 3, and they still managed to make a film with similar flaws in it, a film that might actually be worse than Spider-Man 3, they're never going to get it. Much like Warner Brothers.

Agreed. TASM3 isn't in a position I feel right now to succeed or right the ship. I can only see it bringing the ship down more, especially if they don't get time to reevaluate the script. Honestly, how much of TASM2's problems can they fix this quickly when the film must be out in 2 years? Clearly, people found stuff to complain about. You can't digest these complaints and adequately fix them in a 2 year run.

I just see more film random crap, hire/fire actors/actresses, cut hours of footage, reshoot half the film, etc. again like they did this one. The results won't be any better.

Yeah, you can't paint this as anything but a disappointment. My early prediction was 135, which should be doable for a 3D movie with a character of Spidey's stature. It's going to finish below CA:TWS domestically and WW, which is also a disappointment.

I have to apologize to Ray Subers who pretty much predicted this exact scenario, and I thought he was showing bias against the franchise, but he was spot on with his summer predictions (so far).

I guess we can all somewhat agree now, right?

Raimi > Webb, so far at least?

Haha, I know I definitely agree that that's true, but I don't think we all can. There are still a decent amount of people who actually liked/loved this (terrible) movie.

That's basically true though, if we're being a little more objective, I'd say. Though I'd also personally agree there, too.

I'd say Raimi/Maguire is basically an automatic win over Webb/Garfield now, if we're actually looking at this from an objective standpoint.

These films aren't getting worse reviews and not doing as well at the box office by magic/coincidence.

People have become far too revisionist about Raimi/Maguire just because of Spider-Man 3 without actually thinking about the studio interference and the general making of that film. Have we all just forgotten that those films were, at the very least, great in their time? I myself would say they're still both great now, and certainly better than the drivel that Webb/Garfield have produced, but yeah.

Spider-Man 2 was a nature progression from Spider-Man 1. What we are looking for is a change. An uptick in quality. The chances of that happening with the same director in 2 years has got to be low, especially after what happened between TASM and TASM 2.
