I get the feeling it was a long shot from the get go, but the fact that these two companies were entertaining the possibility in the first place is promising. I think the performance of TASM2 has put Sony in a difficult position. They're not as well off financially as Disney are right now. It was financial stress that caused Marvel to sell the movie rights to Spider-Man in the first place. Depending on what happens with Sony, that could drive a future partnership in a big way. It could serve as a catalyst to making more movies that people want to see.
 
Sony should make Hellboy 3. Will be more profitable then Spidey for them.
